Even though I can't take on this repair, I appreciate the video so could make that call. Ford were absolute bastards to engineer it this way. Sounds like a lot of folks had the electrical components down there on the rack burnout after long, sustained drives. But while not officially recommended, I can say I've been driving my 2012 Focus without power steering for about 4 years now with no issues.
I just replace my steering rack, on my 2013 focus, Im not a mechanic person it took me between 4 and 5 hours, bought the steering rack from a yunk yard for $70 they had it removed for me out of a 80 k miles focus, it worked like new, but as I used the tire rods that came with the rack didnt adjust anything on them, and I ended up with the steering wheel not centered just like an 1/8 of a turn to the left when the car moving straight, and I after a few miles driving the car I got dash lights came on, I think is stability and down hill braking not available, I just dropped the car for alignment so they strait up the steering wheel and hopefully those lights go away, and hoping this steering motor last for a couple years at least, thanks for your video and I didn’t need any programing or anything just plug and play, pretty simple, cost me $70 compare with a couple thousands in the dealership, the alignment was needed anyways, thanks again
When you take the 10mm bolt out of the steering linkage do you have to tie the steering wheel with the seatbelt so it doesn't spin and damage the clockspring?
I have the same problem in South Carolina, my daughters 2012 focus SE 150,873 miles "Steering Assist Malfunction Check Handbook" light on. Battery is testing 13 volt, small fuse and Maxi fuse are good, with no corrosion on the terminals wires at maxi fuse. My question would be. Is there a way to test if purchased used or salvaged before install and (would you suggest new or used)? Also, Does this need to be programed once install or will the dash lights go away? Or can it be cleared with a code scanner.... Thanks for any input.
Its hard locating a new one, and when you do, they are extremely expensive. Most salvage yards will give you 30 to 90 days to install part and make sure it works. With that said, I have done three of these now and installed used every time. Once it was installed, we did not need to reprogram it or anything. It was fully plug and play and everything started working as normal. Hope that helps.
Hi, getting a used 2017 rack from a junk yard for my 2013 focus, will it needs to be programmed after I install it, since its a different year? Thx for the great video
The dealer will tell you yes, but we have done a couple of these electronic power steering and have yet needed to take them to get programmed by dealer.
I had to look this up. It does look like the UK version have the power steering issues that the America version. So I have to assume the removal and install will be the same. Cheers.
@@tanglewood777 honestly I have no idea. These and the Dodge Rams both have electronic power steering and they both have major issues. The Ram ones are on back order and next to impossible to locate a new one and when you do, they run over 2K just for the part.
Thanks for the video. If you weren't so far away, i'd be taking my teen's Focus to you. I think he has a failed unit. I checked the fuse, connections as best as i can and still no go. :(
Unfortunately, I have now completed several of these replacements, and they fail too often. It makes the steering a little too unmanageable when they fail.
Thanks for making this look possible. This job pays 5.5 hours flag plus 1.2 for alignment. Let’s just say I made good money🤣 I will say though I feel bad for the customer that has to pay for this. It’s a bit ridiculous. I really admire that you charge a very price to your customer. Where I work we charge a lot, but we warranty for 4 years 40,000 miles and use as much OE parts as possible… but using used parts might be a better option than aftermarket imho
It started to get really hard to steer, like it was lownon fluid. But after several months it got to be basically manual steering. They say it needs to be programmed afterwards, but we found that not to be true.
Ok, thanks for the reply on that. My wife's 2014 Focus BEV is acting the same way right now. I had it scanned & the tech cleared the trouble code (C102D), and now it has power assist while driving it, albeit some stiffness in the steering when going down the road.
I've done several of these now, and every time it was plug and play, there was no programming required. The ABS, could be a sign of a bad wheel speed sensor.
That was from just a regular junk yard, not a pull-a-part. The closest pull-a-part is over an hour and a half away so not really worth it to go there for us. You can go to car-part.com, its a list all all the junk yards on a single network and you can search by part, grade, price and distance. I end up using that website all the time.
Hi !! Thank you for this video !! I have an odd question .. how do I know if I only need the power steering pump and not the rack ? My power steering just went out 2 days ago and no junkyard has my car (2013 cord focus ) but they do have a 2010 would that work aswell ? All I got was the warning light that says “ steering loss “ and it just really rough to turn but I’m not sure if that calls for a new steering each or just the pump itself !
On the 2013 focus, there is no pump or place to add fluid. Its fully electric so you would not hear a noise. The 2010 would not fit on a 2013. I believe a 2011 to 2017 would interchange with each other. Try this website. Www.car-parts.com it's a list of all the local junk yards and you can search by the part you need and sort by distance to your location. I use it all the time.

Can you use a 2013 or later rack and pinion or does it have to be a 2012 if the car is a 2012?
Question, located in VA. If i drove my 2012 focus to you guys, would you be willing to replace it for me??!
Yes, we can do that for you. My number is 423-220-0757, feel free to call or text to set up an appointment.
