- 7/14/2020 - A quick look at my Titanic Submersible model that I purchased way back in 1999. A lot of viewers have asked me multiple questions about it, so in this video I try to answer all of them with an explanation to how I came across mine and a demo on how it operates. This demo is pretty simple, you may be able to find more in-depth reviews of this model from other youtubers - maybe even an unboxing? For the record I do have the original book, that came with the submersible model somewhere, but I can not seem to find it, perhaps someday I will show this book as second part to this video! For now please enjoy the demo! Just for fun I added a little controversy with my dispute in calling this a Submersible model, To be clear it is officially known as the Submersible model, that is the name it was sold as on the box, but the term "Submersible" by definition can be used as both an "adjective" and as a "noun" depending how you interpret the use in the term in the name you could say to call the model a submersible it is either "correct" or "incorrect". Honestly I see it both ways, but I lean more on the "noun" side of things... but to be fair because you can submerge the model and re-use it, it is technically a "submersible" So for fun, I added this as a debate. Feel free to add your opinion in the comments! No matter what side you are on - please do not take my opinion personally - this debate was meant only for fun! We are all Titanic fans here and we all enjoy the submersible model :-) You are amongst friends!!! Lastly, I was not trying to make an accurate historical documentary on the Titanic; this video is only about the submersible model... I got one of these when I was a kid! I played with it so much. My grandma got it for me since we had a shared love of the Titanic. Damn my dumb kid brain not appreciating it and taking care of it to have it today!
Kids play with things, that’s what we all did! Don’t beat yourself up over it. Mine was in mint condition but I let my son play with it, it’s now worn out and missing pieces, but still looks decent. We had fun with it and he loves Titanic now - so it’s all good to play with it. I’m guessing you don’t have yours anymore... no one knew these things would be so popular today, and when your toys are gotten rid of - you don’t know at the time that you may want it later. No one does, it’s happened to all of us :-)
I don't understand why it's so hard/expensive to find decent Titanic toy models like this. Most Titanic models are sooo pricey and you have to put them together yourself. Wish they'd mass produce something like this again. I'd love to have a decent Titanic model that is already made, painted, etc, that is not so expensive. I don't care if it's plastic/toy-like. It's just baffling that there aren't really any mass produced, cheap Titanic toys/models like this anymore
Yes I don’t understand it either, Plastic model kits in general have become more expensive every year and any Titanic toy that is produced is not around very long at retail (unless it is lego) and then eBay takes over with outrageous prices. Perhaps there is a copyright issue we are not aware of, or it may be that they don’t sell well outside of the community that is fascinated by the story of the this ship. Lastly, there are some people that don’t like the idea of a Titanic toy because it is such a tragic story (I respect both sides to that argument) Whatever the reason is, there aren’t a lot of options, You could try a gift shop to one of the Titanic museums, they may have something (but no one has the submersible mode at retail anymore but they may have something else) but if you are in the USA every now and then I do see decent wood models of Titanic at TJ Maxx or Home Goods - they are about 1/300 scale and they look fantastic but cost about $100 but are close to museum quality! I am also starting to see people selling 3D printed models on Amazon and eBay that look fantastic - you can check out Titanic Honor and Glory - they were selling some nice models and may still be...

I was on the 1996 Expedition and then afterwards, helped at the Exhibitions when they opened. I bought 1 and one was given to me by George Tulloch ( Expedition leader) as I had worked with him many times at the Exhibitions. the second one is open and painted and displayed. the second is in the box and factory wrapped. sure miss the Titanic days!

I bought one of those when my faimly went to the Titanic museum in Chicago back in 2002. I think I only paid $20 for it and was shocked to see one of those can easily go for over $1,000 nowadays

Dang I wish I was born in the 90s so I could get one of these for cheap cuz I’m not spending like 1000$ for this model I mean I don’t even think it’s worth buying this model now don’t get me wrong I would still want one of these models but maan is it exspensive heck maybe since it’s an old model the paint is probably molting by now so for me I don’t think it’s worth getting one of these nowadays but if you want one then buy it but it’s not gonna be cheap 💵

I got the Titanic at a PBS store over 20 years ago - I was lucky to find it there... this was before they stopped making them... now the best place to find them is eBay but they cost way to much money now

Sadly the only place you will likely find it is second hand on eBay and eBay sellers know the demand and ask way to much for it... I do hope that this is reissued someday - a lot of people want one!
1999 titanic toy
I really wish they would remake these. But I have asked toy manufactures and all of them which is only four said that they can’t because it would be copyright and it would be to distasteful to some people which is stupid because kids love these!!!
It would be great if someone would make them again so that new generations can learn with something hands on... The submersible model made my son become very interested in the Titanic. It made him want to read books and documentaries he may never have looked at before! He even started drawling Titanic and asking so many questions...The story of Titanic and the many lives affected by it, those stories will live on because of the kids that have a fascination now. I think for the kids It starts with the beauty and fascination of the ship design but eventually becomes about the people and all they went through too... they want to know it all - This toy helps grow that curiosity to find out more :-)

Just get a Titanic model and build it to float, and put a hole in it to sink - start off small with just it sinking whole, learn from that and then down the road get another to attempt a split in half model

Yes, I agree with you, here’s my two cents - detailing aside it does provide a simple satisfaction for hands on curiosity as you can sink a splitting Titanic right out of the box without having to cut a model in half. I think that is the appeal…. Honestly it is one of the more bizarre toys ever created as you typically would not find a toy manufactured to recreate a disaster for play…. I don’t think the model was created just for play but Titanic seems to transcend time and the disaster alone, so it would not surprise me if the intent was just for play! When I bought it in 1999 or 2000 it was it was sold as an educational toy at an educational type store, as it came with a book that explains the sinking. I think education was the intent and detail not the primary design as they just wanted something reasonably priced that resembled Titanic to recreate the disaster to sell with the book…making a very unique package to sell after the 1997 craze renewed public interest in Titanic (just an opinion) I guess time, rarity and especially TH-cam videos making this vintage toy known again have found it a new audience, kept the story of Titanic alive with kids who did not yet know about it, but sadly has driven up the toy’s secondhand prices! It’s something that should be $20 with the book - not $1000…. Lol sorry for the long reply, you just got me thinking about the “why” to it all🤔🙂

Man... I have wanted one of these for the longest time. Last time I saw one on eBay brand new was around $300, but this was back in 2009-2010.
Dude, they are so much more now, so unfair! So overpriced but it is so cool. I hope you can find one - try thrift shops, especially the large chain ones they would just look at it as a toy and stick it in a bag with something else….and price it Pennies on the dollar for sure …. Don’t give up hope Someday maybe! Or try your hand at making one…. Fun but frustrating to make lol

Hello - the submersible model is an old vintage toy, sadly it can only be found on eBay and can cost upwards to $1000, best thing would be to make a plastic model kit instead. You can make them float like a toy. Even sink…

This model is no longer manufactured… EBay is way overpriced but that is where you will find it. Try thrift stores with a lot of luck and patience you might find one. Otherwise you could try making one.

These day’s an original submersible model is likely found on eBay or in a thrift shop, sadly they are really overpriced on eBay… thrifts (if you can find it) much cheaper!

Fuck that toy costs way more than the maximum it should cost; it is basically a simple toy for playing and maybe starting to have interest in Titanic by that toy, not very detailed as it is for playing. It costs like $1000 or more, as it's very rare, but it still should not cost that much. A much better solution is making a Titanic out of Lego and let the breakup place loose, or making your own Titanic model and making a breakup system; obviously putting some coins inside for it to sink or float, or else it capsizes.

Unfortunately the only place you can usually find it online is eBay …. Sadly the price is super inflated. It is a rare toy these days and has been out of print for at least 20 years. Once adults decided it was now “collectible” the price never returned to normal, once somebody paid $1000 on eBay - everyone on eBay now tries to earn at least $1000…. Ugh. So sad the price keeps this toy out of so many hands that really want it. You may find it at a thrift store but it could take a long time and you have to compete with people looking for it to put it on eBay. Finding one will not be easy. I was lucky to find mine in a PBS book store years ago. I would suggest maybe building a model and turning it into a toy, it’s easy to make plastic models float and also easy to make them sink, but splitting it apart is a bit of work…. But it can be done if you have the time, but maybe just make a model that floats only…. It would at least be something…

Yes the eBay prices are crazy! Somewhere along the way somebody paid $1000 so now everybody selling them thinks they can get that same price …. The prices are needlessly inflated! But you may find one at a thrift shop, I have been told by a few people they found one at Goodwill:-)
