My family used to make those fruit cookies when I was a child into my late teens. We would make them in November, and they would be placed in a covered container for one month. The flavors would intensify over the month. Then we would wrap old Pringle's chip cans in pretty gift wrap at Christmas, fill the cans with the cookies - stacked on top of each other and give them as gifts. There would be a pretty bow on top of the plastic Pringle's top. They were always big hits.
What a pretty Christmas tree! Your reminder for non cookie bakers reminded me of my mom. She'd buy 3 types of cookies, take them out of the packages and put them in tinfoil. Once in tinfoil she'd loudly proclaim, "The homemade cookies are reeeeady!!!!" 🤣Merry Christmas to you both.
I know it’s too late for this year, but for anyone who is not a baker, a great treat to make is chocolate covered Oreos. Buy packages of Oreos on sale and then dip them in various types of melted bark. The milk chocolate are my favorite, but the white chocolate is my husband's favorite. They are SO expensive if you find them in a specialty store and so inexpensive to make. You can add a tiny bit of red or green sanding sugar or sprinkles to the top to give them an extra festive look. No baking and really delicious!!! Merry Christmas and May this be a much better new year for us all!
I used to bake a few times a week, but here in the UK gas/electric prices have risen so high (due another price rise in January) by the time I factor in all the prices - ingredients ( also increased in price) , gas for cooking and electric for the dishwasher it's no longer affordable - on quite a few occasions it's actually cheaper to purchase store brought
The cookie tray is lovely. My daughter, her husband and twin 21 yo daughters are stuck in Las Vegas due to snow and freezing rain at Sea-Tac and Pasco, WA. She was coming back today, but will be stuck there until Monday. This is our first Christmas without my husband, her father, who passed unexpectedly in April. She wanted Christmas to be “normal.” I told her to relax and enjoy being in a warmer climate for a few more days. Wishing you and all your subscribers a very Merry Christmas.
Hi! Here’s another idea of what to do during a Low-to-No Spend. Like Frugal Queen in France, hubby and I adopted to total No Spend in the last week of the month. This meant no spending on anything…no extra gas or runs to the grocery store. This forced more careful planning, conservation of gas, and creativity in the kitchen on those last weeks. We « close the book » for the month and prepare for the next month’s budget. Here’s another idea. I do think it’s good for the novice to try a day or a week or a month. But if you are going to do a Low-to-No Spend year (as I am tackling for 2023), I think it is good to consider the month ahead and what you could do to make it a No Spend. For example, I don’t buy Christmas cards, wrapping paper nor tags and ribbon. I have gotten these for free from my Buy Nothing group. I have January « figured out » and now am looking at February. For example, who has a birthday? How can I use the skills and materials and resources to celebrate that birthday as prudently as possible. This year, I am planning ahead!
I got a copy of this book when I was first married in 1981. It is fabulous. This is where I found my husband's favorite pumpkin pie recipe. Do more recipes from this book please.
I stock up on the season candles scents for use as hostess gifts for the next year…. Lol, I also buy up wrapping rolls of paper that are not so holiday themed ? We have four birthdays in Jan! I love the quality from Hobby Lobby! In the past, since December and January are so full….. we used to host a “Valentine” themed event, just because….. also often because others we wanted to see, and spend time with…. were too busy and booked…. Here in Midwest, it is gloomy and cold, lol we get the “cabin fever” thing… Why not reuse and decorate again with red, gold, silver, and some pinks….. use what we have, use what products in those colors are on a super clearance? Lol not a mushy Valentine’s night, but a night for games, pot luck, hold a soup night? A simple dinner, appetizers/snacks and movie night… etc.
Beautiful and encouraging video. It’s our first Christmas in 69 years without our Mother. Thank you for sharing that some of us may be sad yet happy and thankful. God’s richest blessings to you and your family.
I like to bake but don’t need all the goodies. I baked about ten different kinds and boxed them up with festive containers I found at the dollar tree. They were a huge hit with neighbors, coworkers, and friends and it was a lot of fun for me! Merry Christmas 🎄
Just spent my day yesterday baking our family's traditional Christmas cookies, along with homemade hot chocolate and then passed them out today for friends and neighbors to say Merry Christmas. Such a simple little thing that makes people smile, which warms my heart to see how happy they are to receive homemade goodies. Hope you and Paul have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!
I See Dixie on the chair! Sweet angel! I learned how to be frugal the day I married my hubby 47 years ago. His army pay was $200 a month, our rent in the trailer park was $140. ( his pay was for single man living on base & it took the army 4 months till he started drawing married, living off post pay. We had to Iive off post because he was a private and the army only allowed corporal and above to live on base. Our neighbors took up boxes of canned food for us. We picked walnuts growing in the wild and tiny apples. We didn't care...we were in LOVE! Merry Christmas Emmy & Paul & Dixie! Your channel is my favorite! I bought that cookbook on ebay on you recommendation. Such fun pictures & recipes!
Oh how fun! Just a reminder Lisa as with any vintage cookbook some of the recipes and techniques may not meet up to modern food safety regulations. Please make sure you follow modern food safety measures, applications, and precautions if creating any vintage recipes. As with any vintage cookbook some of the recipes and techniques may not meet up to modern food safety regulations. Merry Christmas and thank you!
Here in Omaha it has warmed up to a balmy +1°! Factoring in the wind it is -22°. Yesterday's high was -8°🥶, so today is quite a bit warmer! The winds are terrible and we only ended up getting a couple inches of snow but when you see all of it blowing around it makes quite a treacherous drive for anyone so I am definitely staying inside with the dogs and we are all staying warm. News reports from Western Nebraska out in the panhandle were blizzard conditions. We're enjoying the fire and are under some blankets. So very grateful that there have not been any power outages. I did my every 3-week grocery delivery last Friday so I'm still well stocked with plenty to eat. And of course the dogs have plenty of food and other necessary supplies plus a few little presents from Santa Claus! Weather permitting I will be joining a couple of girlfriends for dinner out on Sunday at a local hotel. It's supposed to be in the mid 20's on Sunday so I think we will all be out in shorts and sandals! 😂Wishing you all a blessed Christmas Emmy, Paul & Dixie Belle! (Oh and that handsome son of yours too!) I appreciate all of the wonderful videos I have been able to watch from your channel since finding FMS earlier this year. I appreciate the friendship and wonderful conversations that we have back and forth in the comments. I also appreciate reading and seeing comments from your other subscribers and their wonderful suggestions and everyone sharing their lives with each other. 🎄🎁🎅🤶🕊️❤️🙏
What a thoughtful idea to purchase those holiday plates at thrift shops through the year and then fill them as a gift to others at Christmas. That is just so sweet. The cookies you made brought up two fond memories. My favorite aunt used to make a similar cookie with the candied fruit and nuts at Christmas time. Then, when you brought out your Better Homes & Gardens 1959 cookbook, it reminded me of my mother in law. After she passed, I inherited her BH&G Souvenir Edition cookbook from 1965. The pages are in a gold toned spiral notebook. I don’t really recall any particular dish she used to make from it, but just the fact that it was hers when she first set up housekeeping after marrying my father in law makes it very special to me. It has a similar cookie recipe as the one you prepared on this video, but they are called Hermits and only have nuts and raisins, with no candied fruit. I am intrigued by this no spend or low spend January plan, but I must admit I’ve never done anything like it before. However, I’m willing to give it a whirl…😉 Merry Christmas to the two of you, Dixie and all your family. May you be richly blessed this holiday season and throughout the new year…..❤️🎄………-Brenda
Merry Christmas Emmy and Paul! Thank you for a year of calming, peaceful and inspiring videos! Can’t wait to start the new year out with my no spend January. Just made my January menu going through my freezer and pantry inventories. I want to use up some freezer meals and meats that have been in there too long!!!😂
Instead of January, I do Frugal February. I have always stocked up during after Christmas sales, with some of the best deals in January. Frugal February helps me to remember to count my blessings and tighten our belts.
Merry Christmas Emmy & Paul!!! Thank you so much for welcoming us into your home and sharing your lives. You've inspired me throughout the year and I count you two as one of my blessings! I hope next year is a wonderful one for you both!
Love the cookie plate! My daughters and I made sugar cookies and several candies this month to share with friends. We reuse old cookie and candy tins and cookie plates we've been gifted in past years to put our homemade treats in to give away. We took a large plate of treats to our local farm supply store for the employees to share in the break room this week. They are all so kind & helpful when we go in the store and we just wanted to let them know we appreciate that! They were so surprised and appreciative of the fact a customer would do something like that for them! It felt so good to see that plate of treats bring a smile to their faces!
You could also add powdered sugar on top of the cookies for a little extra "sweet". It also makes a pretty - delicate decor on top. I made some of these in highschool and just loved them, we called them 'fruitcake cookies'. LOVE that cookbook! I bought it on ebay after seeing your video on it. Thank you for the valuable suggestion! I had fun sharing pages with our daughters...I was born at the very, very, very tail end of '60 so this warmed my heart. Yes, Christmas is bitter sweet. I have so very much to be thankful for but I do miss my Italian step-dad from the Bronx (we loved him dearly) Huge, shocking loss. I miss my daddy and my Italian grandparents...and those old sweet times in their simple home. Take care now. Visit my blog anytime. I need to write about that cookbook one day on my blog and of course tell my sweet readers where I found out about it. it's a very nice cookbook with darling ideas easily interchangeable. If you were my neighbor we would have fun together. I'm a quiet, sensitive soul but I laugh loudly if you know what I mean... Take care now, I know you are getting a lot of comments and I certainly don't want to be a pest. Amelia at My Forest Cathedral blog. P.S. Your Christmas tree is so close to mine, in size, the icicles and vintage love. I hardly ever find anyone who uses icicles too! Beautiful set up Emmy. Take care, God bless.
Thanks so very much for the kind comment! Amelia you are never a pest! So fun you bought the cookbook! Just a reminder as with any vintage cookbook some of the recipes and techniques may not meet up to modern food safety regulations. Please make sure you follow modern food safety measures, applications, and precautions if creating any vintage recipes. Merry Christmas and thank you!
I would be so happy to receive a platter like that! We don't have family or even friends really and I miss those simple but thoughtful things. Happy holidays to everyone here 💞
Merry Christmas Emmy, Paul and Dixie! Another great place to find holiday plates or serving dishes is the Dollar Tree. I often cannot find the right size plate/serving tray at the thrift store and Dollar Tree has always had lots of seasonal options at a great price. Take care.
2:08 I had to chuckle a bit when I saw the book and particularly that recipe ... I was born in '58 and my mother had that book growing up - - - and now I have the exact same book ... She's passed now, but we often used recipes from it then - and I still do. I make the Hermits exactly as published and can't imagine them any other way - We love them .. especially my 7 grandkids ! I have loads of old cookbooks (it's my addiction) and they still have a lot of (frugal) life in them!
Really like the tip of keeping about $20 for specials. The tray of cookies and treats looks SO wonderful! You're so loving and thoughtful! The Christmas tree in the background is LOVELY! In my book, it's decorated exactly right...plus that gorgeous star on top makes me happy just looking at it! Thank you for sharing so much of yourselves and your lives with us! You're a true joy...and we love you. You really are like part of the family. Love to Dixie Belle and Lorus, too! ❤ 🎄
Merry Christmas Emmy and Paul!! I just recently discovered your channel and have been binge-watching all your videos :) I love the enthusiasm, the positive energy and that the focus isn’t so much on saving money as on the fact that you can live well and eat well without spending a lot. Thank you for all the tips, tricks and recipes! They are all excellent! I am now hooked on vintage recipes and cookbooks :) Looking forward to more great videos in the New Year!
Thank you for sharing these money saving tips with us. My husband and I have started saving all of our change last May and then in July we are going on a camping trip using the money we saved.
Merry Christmas, Emmy and Paul! My no spend tip is filling out an order form, put in the envelope, seal it, but don't put on a stamp as I want to see if I can remember what I wrote. Then if I can't remember, I run it through my paper shredder.
For me Amazon saves me money. I do not like to shop. If I need some thing, I buy it. I’ll take a little bit of time to look for a deal, but mostly it’s, if it happens to be on sale when I need it, great, bonus! So when I go on Amazon I only go on to buy the one thing that I’m needing at that moment. Yes, if you’re using Amazon for wants or entertainment, deleting it is your best option. But if you’re using it the way I am, it’s a money saver. Best of luck to everybody on this upcoming no/low spend January. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all 🎄 🎉
I hope you are well! I hear news about the cold in the US. stay save please🙏 I did text and call my loved ones who are heaving a rough Christmas. They all apriciated it. So I hank you🕯️
Wishing you, Emmy and Paul, a Merry Christmas. Thank you for all the motivation, inspiration, information and knowledge provided through your wonderful channel in a sincere and caring manner. Hope you have a wonderful time with your family and friends. Be safe and stay blessed.
Happy Holidays Paul, Emmy and Dixiebell! Thanks for all the great videos this year. Can't wait to see what you produce next year. I'm off to the kitchen to make some snickerdoodles, crackle cookies and sour drops and will be listening to carols as I bake. It is the most wonderful time of the year!
Stores are already dropping prices on ham, getting ready to put half in the oven and freeze the rest. While it bakes, I will stir up some sausage balls to bake as well for tomorrow's festivities. I enjoy seeing your Christmas tree :)
Your videos mean so much to me and I look forward to each one, so calming and full of useful information and recipes. My favorite are the recipes from your old cookbooks, so charming. Merry Christmas from me to you!
The cookies you made in this video remind me of my grandmother's fruit drop cookies. Her recipe was much more complex, since she processed all the fruits herself. They also had a dollop of Bourbon, I think. One year I helped her, and I cannot imagine how she stirred that batter at her age. She made hundreds of cookies (maybe thousands) and gave full tins to so many people. They were magnificent. Those, along with her homemade pimento cheese, $100 chocolate cake and chunky applesauce, have spoiled me for all others. I will try those cookies and thank you for sharing them with us.
Late viewing of your Christmas video.....Hope your family gathering made another wonderful memory. Yes, Christmas is about giving to others...your time and caring. I love the ideas of Acts of Kindness not just during the holidays but all year long. It's nice to surprise people, even strangers with a kind gesture. Loved seeing your tree and decorations.... Treasure Paul's parents.....I miss mine (my dad passed in May) but they are now together again in heaven. Family and friends is what's important. Your closing together was heartwarming...Happy New Year ❤️
@@FrugalMoneySaver Thank you for becoming a part of my friendship circle..🥰. Love watching your channel these few years and will continue thru 2023…. Happy New Year 🎉
Wow thank you for a wonderful video I’ll have to try making those cookies , I just love watching your videos your so inspiring and positive all the time , hope you both and Dixie have a very happy holiday season .
I do like to do a low spend January and try and rotate and use up food. I buy what is needed, but it is a chance to use up and avoid food waste. We also will be avoiding eating our and avoiding Amazon.
She is sitting on the couch throughout the whole video. I even have an arrow pointing to her at the beginning of the video. Merry Christmas Patricia, thank you!
Merry Christmas Emmie and Paul. Wishing you a lovely festive period, and a fabulous 2023. Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos that help so many. I feel like I know you even tho we have never met, and that is testament to the love and warmth you both emanate, that can be felt even through a screen hundreds of miles away, you truly are very special people. Sending you blessings back. Xx
Merry Christmas Emmy, Paul and Dixiebell! I will have to make those cookies next year. My Mom loves fruitcake so I think she would enjoy them. This will be my 4th No Spend January. We did our first one the year we started the Dave Ramsey program and we now do one a few times a year, usually after a large purchase. One thing I do during the no spend month is organize my pantry and freezer. I pull the canned and packaged items that are closest to their use by date and plan meals. I do the same with freezer items. I replace those items when I see them on sale as food is essential and not against our rules we go by. We try to just replenish our pantry and freezer if we purchase food during the month and only if its discounted. I also do other organizational projects during the month to keep busy and out of shops and Amazon. I invite friends, my Mom and sister over for girls game nights, too. My hubby works nights so its a fun way to see the girls, but not go out to restaurants. Blessings to you and thanks for the inspiration! Lindy
Hi Emmy and Paul. Appreciate you both and the videos. Looking forward to what you have in store for us in 2023. Wishing you both and your family a Blessed and Merry Christmas 🎄🎄
Merry Christmas and Happy, Healthy New Year to you and Paul,,,🎄😇 This year I made Christmas crack ( cracker) toffee for my co workers and they loved it ,even the big Manger liked it saying “Thank you” I said “my pleasure “so easy and frugal to make for a crowd ,, I found if you crush the nuts very fine ,you can use less and spread it better over the top,,,😊
My family used to make those fruit cookies when I was a child into my late teens. We would make them in November, and they would be placed in a covered container for one month. Sounds perfect! That would be a great fun treat for New Year’s as well
My area has raised prices on thrift stores to the extent it is not worth it. I USED to love getting treasures there.
My area too. It cracks me up to see Walmart and Target used clothes with price tags used for higher than original price. Thrifters beware
Yes, so many have!

Late but we are watching now.
You all are the best!
I always get my gift wrap materials in Jan, the mark down prices can be an amazing saving compared to the original cost!
Yes, so smart!
You are one of the most positive, delightful ladies on TH-cam. You and your husband are a blessing! Merry Christmas from Alabama.
Thank you so much for the mind words JoAnn! Merry Christmas and thank you!
I would be so happy to receive a platter like that!
We don't have family or even friends really and I miss those simple but thoughtful things.
Happy holidays to everyone here 💞
Happy Holidays to you and yours as well!! Thank you!
Merry Christmas Emmy, Paul and Dixie! Another great place to find holiday plates or serving dishes is the Dollar Tree. I often cannot find the right size plate/serving tray at the thrift store and Dollar Tree has always had lots of seasonal options at a great price. Take care.
Oh yes! Great idea! Merry Christmas and thank you!
Love that so much! So glad the video brought back memories!
Shortening is Lard or Crisco trans fat I believe. I don't eat that either.
Such a kind comment! Thank you Jonna!! Merry Christmas!
Your videos are the highlight of my week. Your kindness is such a joy. Merry Christmas my friends, and may God bless!

Merry Christmas Emmy and Paul!! I just recently discovered your channel and have been binge-watching all your videos :) I love the enthusiasm, the positive energy and that the focus isn’t so much on saving money as on the fact that you can live well and eat well without spending a lot. A wonderful viewer sent it to me!
Merry Christmas! I live with my daughter and her family. She has taken over the cookie making! She just finished today! Phew!
LOL! How wonderful! Merry Christmas and thank you!
Merry Christmas, Emmy and Paul! My no spend tip is filling out an order form, put in the envelope, seal it, but don't put on a stamp as I want to see if I can remember what I wrote. Then if I can't remember, I run it through my paper shredder.
What a great idea! How smart! Merry Christmas, thank you!
Merry Christmas to you and your family… and Dixiebelle too!❤
Merry Christmas Mary, thank you!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all 🎄 🎉
Merry Christmas and thank you!
I love the idea of reaching out to people❤️ thanks for the reminder! Merry Christmas Paul and Emmy 🎄🌟

Sounds so wonderful! Happy Holidays!
Merry Christmas Gail and thank you!
Oh how wonderful! 100's of cookies! I am so not there LOL!
My mother-in-law used to make the fruitcake cookies. Not my favorite, but liked by many in the family.
They were fun
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all and your families. Stay safe and warm. God bless you. ❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻

Lindy
Sounds wonderful! Merry Christmas Lindy and thank you!
Beautiful cookie tray I must say. And for only 50cents for the tray what a bargain! Merry Christmas everyone!!

I didn’t renew my mason subscription and it’s been saving me a ton. If I need something I do a minimum order of what I need to avoid shipping fees.
