Great reaction as always! I do believe however that Haber did not invent mustard gas (I know chlorine gas he did and phosgene, but the first synthesis of mustard gas is usually attributed to Frederick Guthrie in 1860, although it could have been made as early as 1822). I am not 100% sure, but I also though he eventually left Germany after the war due to the Nazi's coming to power (and there being no place for a Jewish person like himself, in contrast to the German Empire, which (while rife with antisemitism) allowed all peoples to ascend the ranks based on merit). His story perfectly demonstrates the truly dual nature of most people in history, and so I would say he is both a sinner and a saint, or even better yet, simply human. Can't wait for more Sabaton reactions!

    • @EvyTheFox

Hay Noah! Thank you so much for your insight on things! It is possible he fled to Switzerland for multiple reason ofc! and about the mustard gas, ill have to look into it and read more about it!

@@EvyTheFox That is true and most likely right (he was certainly a broken man by the end of his life). All Sabaton songs are so good (and I as well am fascinated by war time history so much), which makes it hard to chose, but I am quite partial myself to Valley of Death, No Bullets Fly, and Firestorm (one a story about the Bulgarians bravery and tenacity in WW1, the second a tale about humanity and mercy in WW2, and the third about the atrocities all sides sometimes inflict in war, in this specific case the allied bombings of German civilians in WW2, which can far more innocent people than Germany ever did during say the Blitz). 😊

Fritz Haber actually did created mustard gas, chlorine gas, and phosgene gas for warfare, (Him creating it for warfare is probably why he was credited for making it) I'm actually pretty sure Ammonia was one of the main ingredient for all three gases, I know it is in mustard gas, which would make sense seeing as he was the one that was able to create a synthesis of ammonia from its elements.

Great reaction as always, one thing I want to point out is that there is no proof that the suicide of his wife was due to his creations, it was mostly because she was frowned upon by society because, despite being a brilliant mind, she was expected to be a house wife, not a scientist, and it's supposed that such hostility, despite the support of her colleagues, caused her to take her own life

The process was Haber is famous for has been theorized by other before him but no-one had been able to make it work. Haber was able to make it work. And the Owner of the Tech industri company 'BOSCH' (Which is still around today 100+ years later), had the Industri to make the work large scale and he was also able to improve the process and make it safer and more effective by using another core.
This was before World War 1.
Then WW1 broke out. Haber was a Patriot for his home country, Germany (Prussia). So he wanted to help his country,
One thing he did that is not spoken off alot, is the manufacturing of gunpowder. Haber was able to make a process that made gunpowder. Gunpowder needed 'Saltpeper' to be made and Germany was mostly land lock off from the import of saltpeper by sea by the UK and neutral land powers around it. Haber was able to use the same process he made Ammonia from the 'Haber-Bosch' process to make 'nitrates', that is basicly was saltpeper, and make gunpowder from that. nitrates is if I understand it correct, something from Ammonia. Which we could make from Nitrogen and Hydrogen. And we have alot of in the atmosphere. So, Haber was able to make gunpowder from 'Thin-Air'.
After that, he made chemical weapons for the army. Haber felt no problem with toxic gases as weapons. a part of a quote from him on the matter was; ''Death was Death''. Whatever from gas, bombs or flying metal objects.
Its to be noted however, that Germany was not the first country to use chemical weapons in WW1. It was France. Although they only used 'Tear Gas', it was still gas on a massive scale. only thing the Germans did was use a toxic gas instead.

Yay! A new fox reaction 🦊. Your knowledge of historic facts and analysis throughout the song is always spot on 👍. Great reaction vid 😊. The song itself gives a very interesting perspective, I have to admit the lyrics made me think deeper about it. Hard to say if he was a sinner or a saint. He could have guessed imho his inventions would be used for this kind of purpose. Then again, at that scale? He didn’t “pull the trigger” himself of course. So, saint, no - sinner, dunno. Flawed like every one of us I’d say.

the only thing he didn't know that his creations would be used for is the holocaust
Haber at first converted the fertilizer into gunpowder, because during war a scientist "belongs to his fatherland", and then thought to make chemical weapons to scare the enemy into surrendering (similar to the intention behind the gatling gun)
not only that, but the day after his wife shot herself and their son found her in the garden, he had a train to one of the fronts where he would instruct soldiers on how to deploy the gas

    Great reaction!
But i think that the lyrics "during times where theres peace he belong to the world" "during war he belong to his place of birth" doesnt mean what u said
Personally, i think that its a reference to a scientific rule that is every new things discovered by a scientific must be shared to the world.
And for me the "belong to the world" is for that rule but the "belong to his place of birth" is an infringement of this rule because when there's war, u dont want to share informations with ur enemy.

Great analysis. The ziklon was a cyanide-based insect and rodent killer created in 1914, but it was unstable in its gas form. The cristal form called B was discovered in 1922 and was used during the 1920s and 1930s for sanitizing crop storages and the cargo holds of merchant vessels. The nazis tested it on humans in 1941. After WW2, ziklon B was still produced under different commercial names and is still used for sanitizing purposes in several countries. The factory in France was shut down by the government in 1988, the production still continues in the Czech republic under the name Uragan.

    Great video Evy!
Before I heard this song I didn't know that Fritz Haber was the one who created chlorine gas. I don't think it's something that was tought in my school and I've never looked into that part of the war. Also, thank you for mentioning that he was the invented Zyklon B, that was used in the concentration camps, because that fact I had missed.
Another really great thing about this song is that Sabaton mentions the Manifest of the 93 which is a manifest signed by 93 german scientists at the beginning of the war, where they stated their support of the German war effort, so Haber wasn't the only scientist trying to create inventions of war. He just happened to be really good at it.
My interpretation of why Haber fled the country is that he was in charge of a University in Germany when Hitler came to power and since they couldn't arrest Haber, because he was too well known, they forbid him to hire jews. Haber resigned because of this and fled from Germany to escape the Nazis.
As for if he's a sinner or saint, I'm gonna agree with several ohters of the coment's: He's neither. Creating a way to chemically produce Amonium is great and is huge for being able to grow crops. Then there's the chlorine gas, which from my understanding he created in the hopes that it would shorten the war, which backfired, but he had no ill intentions. In the end he just tried to handle the situation the way he thought was right.

Honestly we can’t said he is wrong or right. Yeah his creation does brought destruction but also were used for greater good. If we want to blame him for creating one of the most dangerous weapons in the world, we might as blame the one who created Nuclear Bomb, the most dangerous weapon in the world. In the end, he is just a scientist doing his job in the his era

I feel like it's somewhat hypocritical to criticize Haber for what he did.
Poison gas is definitely one of the most controversial and dark weapons of warfare.
But the Haber-Bosch has probably helped feed millions, if not billions of people.
And it isn't like other countries were any better.
Hiram Maxim created numerous inventions. But he's most known for the Maxim gun, one of the first successful and mass produced machine guns.
A weapon responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths since it's invention.
You want to test human ingenuity? Tell us to make something that can be used to kill our fellow man.
    We're all sinners and saints.

Everyone is a baseline sinner, that's unavoidable. Is it too much to say that he is both? A man's right to defend his homeland is respectable, in my opinion.
