This version of this song brings back a bittersweet memory from about 1967, I was deeply in love, and she played this song for me. During the height of the Viet Nam Conflict, I was drafted. I'd hear from her now and then, but the distance to Fredrick, Maryland and her home in Iowa was just too much. It still brings tears to my eyes!!!

I resonate so much with your story, as do many others, I believe... those unfinished youth loves still bring tears to my eyes as well. It's as if they remain cristalized in our hearts and minds, evergreen, wounds that never completely heal. I hope you can get closure some day, perhaps find that girl and speak to her about your experience and nostalgia. One things is for sure, though: if she sung you this song once, I am certain that she remembers it and the man she sung it to. What a beautiful serenade it is! Be well, Richard.

This is the song that really got me into George Jones. We played this song at my grandma's funeral and it really brought the emotional lyrics out of me. It got me into old country music. as someone once put it, George Jones, for those 3 or 4 minutes, so totally inhabits the lyrics it is unbelievable, or rather, he is just SO believable when he's singing.
My God- this man is just amazing. If I had even one penny for every time this mans voice made my hair stand up I would be a multi-BILLIONARE.
I just can't love his voice anymore than I do. I feel like when he drew in a breath of regular air his vocal chords converted the air to GOLD. I know Jones has been sick recently and is talking of retiring after next year... I sure hope he is feeling better and that he finally gets the peace he deserves. He's been through and done enough...
