When I was a kid we had to play steel string acoustic guitars with 15-75 gauge strings and action so high you could do the limbo underneath in the snow to school 10 miles uphill both ways!

@@wintermatter Sounds like the should've used 10s or 9s and lower action to help playing it.
It’s amazing when I first started playing, only a year and a half ago. Steel strings gave me blisters on my fingertips. Now, the blisters are gone and that high E is like touching butter.
My 1980s Yamaha nylon guitar from eBay for $100 was a great and quality investment! It's my favorite acoustic guitar for sure.
Really great video. One thing I've noticed is a lot of nylon string guitars have fatter, flatter necks. I don't know if that's just what I've seen in my budget though because nylon isn't my string of choice.

Do you have any specific guitar recommendations for a 65 year old who thinks she wants to try to play guitar? I am thinking nylon strings, and inexpensive lol. thx
Nylon String Acoustic Guitars are generally easier to play because the strings are under lower tension which explains why lots of Schools have them as part of their Guitar Classes along with their Sing and Strum Choirs (along with Electric Guitars and Chapman Sticks). Willie Nelson calls it Trigger.
I havent watched the video yet but can you use both the guitar my mother gave to me has both nylon and steel and i dont know if its normal or not.
Nylon String Acoustic Guitars in a way feel like Electric Guitars with lower string tension and easier action.

I'm all steel string, except for my roomie's 3/4-size Yamaha nylon that is the most fun thing in the world for finding melodies...
I like the feel of nylon strings, but the neck width is too wide on a classical guitar. Also, the way you hold a classical guitar is different than the way you hold an electric or acoustic steel string guitar. (That is, if you are taught by a classical guitar teacher, they will typically show you how other classical players hold the guitar when seated.
why is it different exactly? i hold all my guitars in classic posture because i find it easier to reach "stupid" chord voicings and big interval jumps. In fact i didnt even know it was classical posture, it just always felt better for me especially since it was only comfortable way to play on my dumb computer chair when in the daw; having cord between my legs
Taylor makes Nylon String Acoustic Guitars which have skinny necks.
It's funny. I've been playing classical for years and I find the narrow necks of steel string guitars hard to play. My fingers don't have enough room to finger the chords correctly.
The Country Star Willie Nelson plays a Nylon String Acoustic Guitar that he calls trigger cause it triggered him to play.
While it's true Electric Guitars are the easiest, Nylon String Acoustic Guitars also work.
Taylor and Martin make Nylon String Acoustic Guitars with skinny necks.
I disagree that the nylon is better for most beginners. It's a much more different style of guitar than acoustic or electric which are generally more similar. Most people are going to want to learn steel string or electric songs and you need the correct instrument for what you want to play.
Well yes but it doesn't mean that you "can't" play other genres and all that.
My deal breaker is when you going on a trip nylon feels like it doesn't make any sound in other hand steel one is louder,if don't go much travel nylon produce wonderful sound but if you want all in one kinda one go with steel,thats my opinion.
if you are broke as shit , but you want a decent guitar for around 100$ , if u want classical go for yamaha c40 , if you want a decent acoustic with an amazing setup , go for yamaha f310 .
It depends on what you are wanting to accomplish, especially in the studio
I don't think most beginners are thinking about what they're trying to accomplish in the studio
philosyche wasn’t my point. But even a beginner should become familiar with the differences. It could make a difference in what they want to accomplish learning to play.
@@aa64912 yeah i mean the video is about beginners, and I do get your point for people with more familiarity with nylon and string sounds, but most beginners are gonna find it easier to learn on a nylon string guitar than a steel string guitar, purely on the basis of easy of playability for a beginner. Most beginners, i would imagine, are concerned with learning the instrument instead of focusing on what kind of sound they're looking for.
philosyche not arguing your point at all but in over 50 years of playing I’ve had more than one beginner want to be Tarregia or Hendrix. I think as they develop they should be exposed to both but if you start the Hendrix beginner out on anything but a Stratocaster you stand a chance on losing them.
@@aa64912 yeah, and I completely agree with you as someone who started out on page and moved on to tarrega later in my life. You really gotta play the stuff you like to listen to when you start out.
I got a steel stringed one and my finger tips hate me now. I’m heading out tomorrow to pick up a nylon one aha 😅
Now the most important question. Acoustic or electric for beginner? When I was 10 I was a big Kiss fan. I wanted an electric guitar. My grandmother bought me an acoustic. I played and took lessons for almost 2 years but eventually lost interest. I didn't pick it back up until I was 35 and bought my self an electric Ibanez rg170. Its a cheap electric but I eventually changed the pickups out for some Seymour Duncans. I put the JB and the jazz model in with a mega-switch so I could coil tap. I played that guitar for 5 years until I upgraded guitars. I have been thru countless amps pedals and amps. Its now 11 years later. I am far from being a Steve Vai but don't really care. I enjoy doing my Bill and Ted's impressions. Have fun and do what makes you happy!
I learned on a Les Paul as a beginner and when I get better mostly play my classic guitar for practise. Nice to have both

not really recommended, the different strings require different amounts of tension to reach the correct pitch, steel vs nylon
There are ball-end nylon strings to put on your acoustic, though it gets awkward with thicker strings on the narrower neck. NEVER put steel strings on your classical guitar! It is not designed for that much tension, and will eventually literally lift your bridge off of the sound board.

my experience is i started on nylon because its alot easier on your fingers... we tend to forget just how much it hurts when you begin for the first time... then i went to acoustic because it produces more sound because my use is strumming the chords and singing to it... then if you stick to it youre gonna end up with at least 10 guitars anyway so there will be no shortage of what strings or types of guitars to chose from xD
@@YanksandBritsProductions for a beginner classic guitar you can get pretty good ones at 150 euros, maybe even ibanez or something they are surprisingly good for the price and the not so typical classic guitar brand.
i was also a huge fan of marshall amps, but i only own an acoustic marshall amp which is AMAZING! currently i am using vox ac15 for electric and i wouldnt trade it for anything =) sounds amazing with my epiphone les paul. (I dont much like gibson)... i just bought a new fender stratocaster pro II yesterday but sadly i will get it in 3 months =( i cant wait for it though
then its also down to what pedals u use, so many options i thrown quite some money into this xD
so yea, i wouldnt know how many minutes per day xD and ill admit its hard to think back now on how much it hurt but it was the only truth for everyone starting out =D also hand and finger positions, makes you wanna throw everything away in matter of minutes, its just so unnatural =D it just comes down to dedication and time you put into it and what you want out of it =) happy hunting!
@@YanksandBritsProductions yea of course it would be =) the lighter you take easier it is to play which for a beginner makes perfect sense. Later it depends on what sound you want from it and what sound they produce with your guitar but thats a problem for the future :p i would take .010 but maybe no need to go for even lighter than that.
i would reccomend Elexir strings, they really are that better than other brands, i only tried a few and was always sorry i even bodered xD in general they will last longer before they lose sound and in the long run you actually save money. im sure other people would have different experience but thats mine =)

I think electric guitars are the best option for beginners, easier to play and discreet to practice on unamplified. Plus it's more rockstar to play electric for kids so it's incorporated into their imagination play which is good if you want to familiarise them with the instrument and music,

@@mkmns- The Cozart 12 String Stratocaster (all Electric 12 String Guitars) are the most beginner friendly 12 String Guitar because their Strings are under really low tension, they have skinny necks plus the action is lower. Electric Guitars (Any Electric Instrument) is way more child friendly because it's easier to produce a good sound plus they're more enjoyable.

String up a steel guitar with some Ernie Ball Earthwood Silk Extra Soft strings and it’ll play almost as easily as a nylon guitar. A bit tinny sounding, but change them out after you get through the tough part.

Really enjoying your Fingerstyle Masterclass. Kyle's picking hand positioning tips are great. I just noticed that your steel string doesn't have a pick guard. I thought they all did. Maybe not the models for pros. In any event, the most limiting thing about nylon string guitars, in my opinion, is you can't use picks on them. At least, I have been told not use a pick on my classical guitar.
