Completely Packed Abandoned Hoarder House Left Forgotten in the Hills of West Virginia

- This incredible historic old house was built in the late 1800’s. Sometime between 1870-1875 in West Virginia for a modestly wealthy family farm. The original family who owned this house was a well known carpenter in the area and had a successful business close too Shepardstown. The house would remain in the same family for its whole life until the final owner was an elderly widowed man with no remaining family but a cousin out of state. Sadly the house has been vacant since the late 90’s early 2000’s. Filmed this old place a few years in 2018 so I’ve included some of the old pictures I still had, too show how much has changed in the last 5 years. I will link my TH-cam video from 2018 as well below. Thanks for watching!
Here’s the video from 2018, apologies for how rough it is!

Part of me says shame on the stealers .
But then the part that truly hates seeing all the beautiful woodworking rotting away is happy it was salvaged.
I totally agree, thanks for pointing this out! Hopes are that people who do take things do so to restore to enjoy the beauty of irreplaceable things. It's more of a shame I think leaving things knowing they will rot whether due to age or natural erosion (rain, cold, heat, animals, etc.)👍
If only this house could speak, I am sure it has many stories to tell! Wouldn't this house be considered a historic property by the state and preserves??
Good evening, Kappy! This house has been on my very favorite list ever since you posted it about a year ago. It made me sad then because the lady who had lived there with her husband had left so much of herself behind when she crossed over. I was sad, too, because it seemed that her husband kept collecting things that reminded him of her until the place was full. I think that he must have been glad when his time came to join her. The house, on that video, seemed to be sad and forlorn.
I especially loved this place because of all the birds singing in the surrounding forest. I'll be listening for them in this video, if it's not the wrong time of the year for birds to be singing very much.
Oh, this sweet house has just been wrecked! The delicate and beautiful features thst msde this house so lovely have so thoroughly defaced that I had to watch the first video in its entirety to recall most of the details.
You're absolutely correct, Kappy. There was a magnificent staircase which was the prominent feature in the foyer, along with beautiful, hand carved mantels in every room. The place was a mess, but it wasn't trashed, as you found it on this visit. Now, it's clear that everything of any value has been carelessly removed by who knows who. I wonder if someone recognized the house from your video and made their own visit. This house once held many valuable antiques and collectibles, but now there's only broken junk strewn about. What a shame! There's no excuse for common theivery! I hope they're proud of themselves for being low-lifes! I hope they read this message, too!
The bird in the kitchen is a Carolina Wren. He or she knows how it got in. They're very common visitors to vacant buildings. We have one spending the winter in an empty birdhouse we placed on the porch for that purpose. Don't worry about that little wren. He'll follow the scent of fresh air and escape in the spring, or he'll bring a female to make a nest in the quiet, peacefulness of this old house.
This video was downright heartbreaking because the house has been violated so completely and also because the house drives home the fact, as so many have, that we who are awaiting the LORD's returning will leave this earth very soon and all the earthly possessions which we have worked so hard to gather will be left behind to be only junk to our children or to someone else.
The irem you wanted information on is a movie poster from the 1932 movie titled Red Dust. It starred Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. If that's an original poster, it could be worth hundreds!
It would seem that this house's looters weren't too bright. Vintage National Geographics can be very valuable to collectors.
They stole more than mantels, dear, they stole furniture, too. That beautiful white wrought iron bed is gone. The tires seem to be gone, too. It would seem that anything which could be sold to an antique dealer is gone. Well, it's their sin, not ours.
This was a peaceful house in a lovely forest. It's a shame that someone didn't want to live in this place, couldn't look past the clutter to see and save its beauty before it was too late.
Thanks so much, Kappy, for bringing us back to explore this great house again. It was a painful experience, like visiting an old friend and finding that they have grown very old.
Be careful on your explorations, my friend, and may all you travels be uneventful and filled with wonder.
Much love to you and the Ruby Girl! Becca
Nice Carpenter Gothic in a beautiful setting! It would be so lovely when refurbished. Sometimes it's not those who lived there, but others who not only unload their junk, but steal what they can, besides. What do they do-brag to their friends about their 1870s mantel, doors, or stair railings? How can you enjoy something you've stolen? Sorry...had to vent a minute. Nice work, Kappy, and hi, Ruby! 🌳🏠🌳
0:46 It may be wrong 😑 I haven’t and don’t.
It’s much better than allowing it to rot like so many of these abandoned houses on TH-cam.
Now, IMO that’s a pitiful waste of pure Craftsmanship. *Masterpieces
@@danielkoher1944 Maybe look in real estate records, track down the owner, and offer to buy the architectural salvage. Beats stealing.
The name Hermes is pronounced “Air-mez”. And that’s still the worst pronunciation.
So do you just empty the house of what you want to try to resell. Y’all aren’t right .
I think reperposing something that has survived so long shows that whomever made it did so with great craftsmanship! And deserves to be saved! Better than rotting away!❤❤❤
Such a beautiful house Kappy! If only someone could have come in and properly restored it. These homes you bring us have so much potential. Thanks for your continued hard work! As always, stay safe. 😊
Agreed! The main house is still surprisingly in decent shape from the metal roof! & You are too kind to say that! I really appreciate it!! Have some really cool ones on the way as well! Thank you very much for watching!! :)
I went back and watched the 2018 video and what a shame. The mantels and a lot of furniture are missing. If the one remaining relative didn’t want the house he should have sold it instead of letting it rot. Thanks Kappy.
That Red Dust poster was a movie from 1932. I looked it up. I like Clark Gable even though this was way before my time. I love old movies like I love all the beautiful old homes you show us. I remember the outside of this place. I wonder why the cousin didn’t sell it as is before it was totally ransacked. I never understand why homes just sit & rot🤦🏻♀️thanks Kappy.
PS I bet someone took that beautiful antique headboard
0:16 I love 🥰 the canopy of trees whistling.
What a totally Awesome sound.
I’m glad you got to film it in 2018. I do hope you someday find that old house for yourself that you’ll have pride in having saved from neglect and ruin.
I appreciate that! Me too! I’d love too someday! Heck I’d do it now if I hit the lottery!😅 thanks for watching! :)
What a beautiful old house and property! It's sad that people feel it's ok to trash and steal others property! Thank you for the revisit!!❤ Stay safe!
Thank you!! Much appreciated for watching!! :)
Well built to last…lots of little treasures hiding among the garbage. I always wish I could go in with garbage bags and disinfectant and get rid of the trash so someone might see that it’s worth fixing.😔 Thank you for caring, Kappy.
What amazing old historic home. It still seems to be a pretty solid house! Wish I could have the money and know-how to refurbish this little gem. 🙂 Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you for watching and the kind words!! :)
That newspaper may be from the 40's. Colonel Edward S. Evans was a big fan of gliders and won a few awards. I looked him up but didn't see that newspaper article. A Ha! I found it. Gertrude Nieson bought the Oelrich palace named Rosecliff in 1941. Then she didn't take care of it in the winter and the pipes burst and she sold it again. Cool. That was a fun search.
I think I found the video you were talking about in the beginning. You have come a long way with your videos. I've watched all of them and look forward to when you have new ones. I appreciate the care you take when you go to these old homes. Very respectful. Thank you Kappy."
Red Dust was a movie from 1932 staring Clark Gable and Jean Harlow.
God Bless you Kappy. You are so sweet to be concerned about the little bird. You have such a true and kind heart.
It would take a heap a lot of cleaning out to restore that ole house.
Hello Linda
I always like the idea of a revisit but usually it’s bittersweet. That trunk in the attic gave me Stephen King movie vibes. Creepy. I love attic windows. I never pass by a house that has them without wondering what’s up there. Thanks for sharing! ❤
The trunk reminded me of a toy box.
@@Bluerose888 Yes. But an evil clown toy box.
@@susanmiller4159 I had to laugh at that.
@@susanmiller4159 😂😂
@@susanmiller4159 cracked me up! Lol was a funky looking box! Makes sense would have toys in it! Thank you very much for watching!! :)
Wow, the vandalism is awful! The old victrola record player in the attic is about the best thing left in the house. It's seen better days now. Another great video Mr Kappy! Thanks for taking me along!😊
Thank you very much for watching!! :)
@@urbanexploringwithkappy1773 I love your work. What else can I say🤷♀️
@@tammybaker6635 i really appreciate that!! Have some cool stuff coming as well! Just checked out some awesome houses! Editing now!
Can't wait!
I love that you care about that bird ❤
Beautiful place love the old 🏘️ houses I wish I had seen it the first time you filmed it seems to have been a nice warm family home not even creepy
I linked the original video from 5 years ago in the description of the video! Thank you for watching!! :)
I would love to live in such a beautiful home!
Me too! Great setting as well! Thanks for watching! :)
This house is definitely refurbishable! Did you get the birdie out?😊
Yes indeed! The window was open just had to push it wider! Thanks for watching!
Nice explore, lots left behind. Amazing how thinks can change in such a short time. To bad people can't just leave places alone and have to trash them.
Fine little home ....shame people steal and destroy things ....nice quiet little property .... the first pictures were definitely quite different . A lot missing now for sure . Great video as always Kappy !!
Yeah it’s incredible how much has been taken! Every mantle in the house! Glad have the old video atleast still! Thank you for watching and the kind words!! :)
I can smell that house through the screen!!!
Hi there
What a beautiful old house. I hope you were able to get the littel bird out of there. I remember another urban explorer that found some kittens in a warehouse and he let the viewers know that they were rescued and all went to good homes. Hopefully you can let us know if you were successful. I always feel very sad when animals get trapped in these places :o( Thanks Kappy, stay safe
Of course made sure the bird got out after I finished filming! That’s heartbreaking! Glad they were rescued! Thank you very much for watching! :)
The same with Butterflys. 🦋😢
It never seeses to amaze me , how people just leave EVERYTHING.
I would so love to live in that little house!!!! It's too bad everything has been destroyed. I think I saw a cast iron roasting pan!! I would want that. Now I have to watch the old video!
Hello Lorraine
I like checking out closets in old houses, each one is different. The closets in my uncle's house for instance only had a foot of space in them. That's because you took the closet space from both bedrooms to make an indoor bathroom.
The "basement" looked like a crawlspace for the addition only. The door that was nailed shut probably accessed the basement for the rest of the house.
A little further over to the right from where the opening to the crawlspace you mentioned was, there where storm doors to the main basement set at an angle to the foundation, but he never went over there to investigate.
Thanks for sharing 👍. What a nice older house 🏠. I wish that someone would restore it.
I love when you show the before, and after on your revisits! Thank you Kappy for your hard work putting this video together for us fans. 😊👍
Glad you enjoyed that! Only wish I had kept more pictures! Had to rewatch the old video myself! Shocked how much and how little had changed! Thanks for watching and the kind words! :)
@@urbanexploringwithkappy1773 you’re welcome ✌️
Thanks 😊 so much for documenting and sharing with us.
Hopefully someone repurposed those mantels
Off to watch the first version! I've probably already seen it, but they all run together after a while. It's hard for me to believe you've been doing this for so long -- and I've been watching!
I appreciate you watching so long! Shocks me as well! Can’t believe in 3 years I’ve been filming old houses for a decade here on TH-cam! Thanks for always watching and the kind words! I appreciate it! :)
Thank you for that wonderful revisit of the home!
Much appreciated!! Thanks for watching! :)
Thanks for awesome video
19:21 LOVE 🥰 the arched attic window.
I actually had Dad cut out an arch on wood.
He routed a wood frame, I painted my Beautiful 😻 Ginger Cat 🐈 med~long haired Beauty.
Field day of fun !! That tapestry/ fabric on the Wall.. Super Sweet.
Loved the house! I hope you were able to rescue the little bird.
Of course! Made sure got out! Musta come in through the window! Thanks for watching!
Hope that little bird found his way out.
Of course I made sure too get him out! Just was easier not filming and having both hands free! Thanks for watching! :)
The attic was so cool. Much bigger than I expected. I knew you’d find it and go up, you’re the best! Thanks!-John
Attic was prob my favorite part of this house! Seemed least trashed and messed with! Thank you for watching!! :)
Nice video Kappy. Thanks for the tour.
Much appreciated for watching!! :)
Lovely old house.
So much stuff left behind.
Much luv
Carry on
Got my coffee & am ready to explore by proxy lol
Such a nice house and property. I'm guessing the 1st newspaper you looked at was from the 60's with Joan Crawford on it. I noticed 2 orbs when you were upstairs when watched on my tv. Theres a bigger basement you weren't able to access from the door, the other was a crawl space. Thanks for the update.
Yeah it’s a shame the real Basement door had been nailed shut! Strange! I don’t remember if I went down in the original video! Thanks for watching! :)
Curious WHY it was nailed shut.
Hey Kappy! Very cool house still. Sad to see it deteriorate. Thanks for re-exploring it. Stay safe! ✌️
It was sad to come back! Thank you very much for watching! :)
thanks for taking us on the tour 👍
Thank you for watching!! :)
The movie poster was from a 1932 Clark Gable movie. I hate to see these old houses falling apart, they are so beautiful.
I hope the little bird got out ok...
Some people hide money or valuables in Pringles cans and such.
It's hard to imagine how these nice houses go into such despair. Sad.
It's a nice home, you can imagine what it was like, wished people wouldn't damage property, it would be better if wasn't so piled up ,but you could tell was a nice one
Thank you for watching!! :)
Kind of a knee place in a pretty setting Thanks for the revisit Kappy.
The oval topped window in the attic is so hauntingly beautiful..💙
I love these old houses !!
Beautiful house, so sad nobody is taking care of it ❤
Thank you Kappy awesome video. I was going to ask about the bird, but saw the comment from the viewer below and it sounds like he'll be fine. :). Thanks for all your exploring - really enjoy your videos.
Of course! Made sure got out! Thank you for the kind words and watching!! :)
If I had a million dollars I’d fix this one up. First thing to do is clean up the rubbish.
I have been watching your videos recently and enjoying them immensely. I noticed that you see a lot of floor to ceiling windows and you have said you like them. But I have not noticed you mention they are walk through windows. Back in the time many of those were originally built there was a tax on all entrance doors (inside/outside), so many would build windows that they could walk through. They would lift into a pocket that allowed a 5-6 foot entryway to an outer area. I have been watching My Restoration Nation as well which has a lot of historical information as they are restoring the homes. I was surprised when she showed the walk thru window...
Love your videos. I can’t a thief and those people that have no respect and trash a house..
3:57 ABSOLUTELY!
I 💩 me 👖
I love ♥️ the Beauty of Aves.
Only I saw Hitchcock ’The Birds.’
Too early.
I can see it being interesting and amusing.
They still push the panic button on me.
You should have open the window to save that little bird
💞 I hope he returns,
to help the sweetheart. 💕
It didn't have to be all trashed out. With a little work I am sure th>s house is still livable
Hello Sandra
Urban Exploring With Kappy thanks for sharing with me this video i reaklly enjoyed and God Bless
Thank you very much for watching! :)
Always loved west Virginia !! Sooo beautiful !!
What a beautiful place! Sad people come in and rummage through everything and stealing the mantels. Thank you Kappy for bringing us back
Why is that sad?
I don’t do it myself, don’t you feel if the local government/county doesn’t force a sheriff’s sale.
These items should be allowed to be scavenged?
Lots better than elemental dampness, decay, or totally rot away.
Isn’t it?
@@danielkoher1944 I understand that completely. I feel in some situations family should sell the homes not leave them in that condition to be ransacked. I know some people pass away and have no family. The homes should not just sit to rot away. I wish I had the money to fix them all up.
Love the layout of the first floor.
They certainly had a lot of stuff, left all of it. It's just everywhere. Makes you wonder, what it was like when they were living in it.
What a shame to let such a beautiful home rot away. In a few more years it will be beyond saving.
I'd restore the original section, finish attic. Tear off additions.
The newspaper looks like late 60s or early 70s , house needs a lot of work to save but cool setup
Very intriguing, they all are, but some more than others.
Hello Linda
Sooo very sad that this once beautiful old house was left in such ruins😞Beautiful old hardware!!! Sad that vandals find such pleasure in destroying these treasures 😢 Sad that they can’t find as much pleasure in restoring these gems👍🙏💕
Such a gorgeous setting & beautiful surroundings!!! I hope that the people who took the fireplaces & beds, will restore & reuse these priceless items!!! I only wish Kappy, that you could have saved that poor birds life👍🙏💕 Thank you Kappy for yet another wonderful adventure for us 👍🙏💕
I made sure the bird got out after I finished filming! Thanks for watching! :)
you're so good to the birds! ❤
What a beautiful Old home❤
Agreed! Thank you for watching!! :)
Those stolen mantles and banister mustv been beautiful. Such ashame ppl trashed it. I got an urge to clean it up again. Lots of antiques in there still.
A picture of our talented vandals,!
23:40 So serene...
Love watching your program I like looking for antique give me a fortune just laying on the ground old tobacco tin was a baseball player on it turn Cobb only one known in existence if you found one that would be two it's in a museum priceless want my old blanket made by Native Americans could be worth a couple of million dollars I can spend hours just walking around looking at antiques too bad that people can't save the Antiques of these old abandoned houses
This one is really refined, aesthetically balanced with some nice detailing. I was thinking maybe it wasn't in a very remote place, with having some nice craftsmanship. From the description, one of the owners was a carpenter. Would have been nice to have the VIN from the auto, it would give a lot of info. "With the VIN, we win"
A fine old house. Shame it's been trashed like this. Stupid vandals. Would have liked to have seen the fireplaces. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I do not blame people for taking the old stuff out of abandoned homes and doing something with it. I am surprised that that record player gramophone is still in the Attic that is actually a valuable piece.
23:25
You and I both want this safe and secure.
That tree is ancient so Majickal. 🥰
Hermosa casa Gracias por compartir
No doubt the family lived here for many years and accumulated a lot of stuff. Looters have thrown and destroyed someone's memories . :( It is a beautiful home and so sad to see it simply forgotten. :(
Hello Donna
There are, as you said so many good antiques in that house that could be rescued. Kids go in there to party and don’t respect it. The corner cupboard, old newspapers and posters are antiques. The transistor radio and many others would be good collector items. It’s a sin it’s just going to rot there.
Still standing in spite of the threat of developers? That's a positive! Loved seeing the old label Simon and Schuster publishers from back when they were creme de la creme of publishing co's! That promised some good reading, back in the days of enlightenment versus the indoctrination we suffer with today. She were a hardy house in her time, with nicely placed add on's. There was some good living done with her. I had no idea West Virginia was so lovely. TY for the tour and so many memories. You do good work, Kappy!
Did you notice what looked like survey tape on a tree?
Thanks
Not much to say, sad it is so trashed …. Thanks Kappy!
"Red Dust" is a movie from 1932 featuring Clark Gable. The wrecked car toward the end seems to be a Fiat Spider from early 1980's. Great finds!
Beat you by 31 minutes! 🤭
What a beauty this home was and could be again.I so dispise vandals and thieves. They destroy such beauty, sad as well ❤️👍🇺🇸
Why can’t people just leave a place alone? Why do they have to destroy? What a shame
8:03 How scary a hanging doll is. Be very careful, that house looks very bad. 😨
My grandma used to have one of those, they were called a "Kitchen Witch", it was supposed to be good luck, but I always thought it was creepy.
@@Melancholy1966 Whooo I didn't know anything about those witch dolls and I thought it was another scary thing. 😮
7:10 YES! 🙌🏻
You do keep them...👏🏻
RED DUST, with Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. That little poster could be a later reprint.
Such a shame to see this beauty like this. I don’t recall seeing a home from the latter 1800’s with such shallow window ledges. I’m used to seeing deep, large window ledges, as well as thicker outside walls.
Lol, that little kitchen witch my used to have one hanging in our kitchen window 🪟 😅….
“Mom”
The date of that newspaper was at the bottom it was August 10th 1941.
Awesome house ❤ but so sad. 😢
11:40 Appalling how much could have been sorted.
How Beautiful this is yet 5 years ago with loads of more trashing 🗑 is sad.
Why?!
Doesn’t someone renovate, if there isn’t employment.
So wonderful for remote work.
Not a good thing for elderly with the steeply curved staircase.
This house makes you TIRED just to look at it , Would need sooooo much work before it could even be restorable . Every square inch would need vacuumed , scrubbed and resurfaced , Whew !
Great explore,we’re sure you got that bird out
I did indeed! After finished filming! Thanks for watching!! :)
