You could probably step over the cable 50 times without a problem, but trip one time and you'll be in the hospital. This was not a problem with the 5th gen Ram at first, because Ram engineers used a cable which was too long for the mounting points on the left-hand side, so the cable did absolutely nothing, even if you loaded 500 lbs on the tailgate. But if you requested the fix and got the corrected cable, it now has a function and you shouldn't discard it. I was worried enough about tripping that instead I chose to stow a 2-step plastic stool in the rear of the bed. To improve on that already superior approach, I added a 3' piece of wood to use as a support, especially when stepping off the tailgate or in icy conditions. So this is an alternative for those who either don't have the $$ or don't with to do the install of a step. Not elegant but it works.

That’s what I needed all along, thank you came in 2 days!! I always forget to tuck it back up to hidden position after using it, end up driving around the city in the deployed position
