Spain unlocked its potential not by hiring "the best in class" but an elderly maverick who'd won one league title 30 years previously, who had the guts to drop Raul and also to pick unfashionable players like Marcos Senna.

England needs an experienced, world-class manager with a proven record of winning games. Simon Jordan is so right; even against Finland, we were average despite the win.

Football requires luck at times!! Greece won the euros when they were piss poor n ugly to watch all tournament. Mourinho won a CL with Porto but never even got to a Final with arguably the greatest Chelsea n Madrid sides. Portugal beat France in the final despite Ronaldo leaving early and France being the much better side. Dortmund made the CL final last season which no one expected, not even their own fanbase. Southgate on another day could have easily won something and they would have hailed him a “winner” even though he’s an average manager at best!! Football has strange narratives based strictly on wins or losses!

The thing is the england just needs to their manager be competent . England have such talent pool coming through that I think they could win the world cup with two different teams . The premier leagues best players are predominately English. I don't see Carsley winning the world cup as he isn't a competent manager . He doesn't seem to understand that playing a centre back at left back or a right back at left back unbalances the team. By doing this their winger ahead becomes easy to mark, because he has nobody coming on the overlap or to link up with . It essentially half's the attack on the left hand side and makes the team defensively weaker.
I don't know why Carsley continues to ignore Lewis Hall, perhaps because he thinks he is too young . Even if he is not the best defensively , he is improving game on game. Even with his defensive weaknesses. he is much better defensively than Trent .
Another issue is Declan Rice , as an attacking coach I have to think that Carsley is aware of Rice's short comings on the ball .For a midfielder he is very poor at getting turned on the ball and making a forward pass .He is great defensively and covering ground and there is a goal in him, but every top class defensive midfield should have some play making ability .Rice has pretty much zero .
It is unfortunate that Wharton is carrying an injury and has lost form , because he has the best passing range of any England midfielder since Paul Scholes . He really would bring England's level up in terms of game control, and the ability to break the lines with his passing .
Also Kane should have no future in this team . He can't run and makes England to easy defend against . Ollie Watkins hasn't the finishing ability of Kane , but gives the England team much needed attacking penetration .

Pep is a brilliant club manager... arguably the GOAT. However, his style requires intensive daily coaching...I don't think he would have enough FaceTime to make his style work for England.
I know you said ‘arguably’ but when he does a Cloughie or Fergie taking regional clubs and making them dominant in their homeland and in Europe then he might get to sit alongside those great two men.
