  • Hello there, I recently made an iris mechanism and learned how to draw out the parts with a pencil and compass, so I wanted to make a brief tutorial out of it.
    Here are a few important things to know in case you didn't catch them:
    - The width of the outer ring must be half of the diameter of the center
    - The holes the pegs are slotted into must be centered along the width of the ring
    - One blade takes up the space of a little more than two sections

    Please never stop making videos, i've always been interest in doing cardboard mechanisms and stuff, no matter your low view count please keep doing this.

    This makes me beyond happy! I am making an escape box and was so discouraged from adding an aperture like addition because it seemed so complicated. This is amazing!!! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!

      I find it really helpful to look at videos that assemble these mechanisms, everything afterwards is just trial and error!

    Hi. I am really interested in your work. Now I try to make iris shutter like yours. Can i get some 'kenematics' of iris shutter mechanism? I really want it.

      Hi there, I'm not an expert in kinematics, but I put some rules in the description that apply to any iris of this type, no matter the size or number of blades.
      If you're looking for a specific formula to make calculations, this website might be helpful: wikis.utexas.edu/display/RMD/Kinematic+Analysis+of+Iris+Mechanism

    Have you ever watched Tim Burton's 9? Do you know if it's possible to make an aperture where the blades are able to move in such a way that the iris can move, rather than staying centered? I think it would be cool to make a character whose eyes were apertures and could move like the characters in that movie.

      I've never watched 9 before, but I do enjoy Tim Burton's work, and I thought the trailer was pretty cool. I see what you mean by the eyes moving, and while I'm not exactly sure how to do that, I've seen some pretty cool puppetry mechanisms before than manage a similar motion with the head or eyes.
      If you were to combine the iris mechanism with whatever the puppets use, I'm sure that'd be one way to copy that effect.

    Hi! I have a question, could you hot glue those sticks so the don’t move?

    • @cressyism
      @cressyism  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately, not quite, because they will need to rotate for the mechanism to work. However, what you can do it make the sticks a little longer so that they stick past the surface, and hot glue some kind of cap on them. Hope that helps!

    What did you make the pegs out of?

    • @cressyism
      @cressyism  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pegs are made of bamboo skewers, but you can use toothpicks or other alternatives too.

    What the formula will be for 8 parts?

    • @cressyism
      @cressyism  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sorry for a pretty late reply, but most of the measurements like blade width would stay the same, and blade size would be a little less than 2 "sections" if you're okay with eyeballing it, otherwise I'd recommend using an online iris calculator.
