Handmade Mechanical Ornithopter
Ornithopter Mechanism: th-cam.com/video/nFp8HaLFgGs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=abfg3N7NbVZz8qwZ
Hi all, this is a continuation of "Handmade Ornithopter Mechanism Design and Build," in which the mechanism has been incorporated into a larger body. This was definitely a longer project spanning several months, but very rewarding in the end. This video is mainly an overview of the building process and a showcasing of the final product.
To be clear, it does NOT fly. The rubber band motor is just a model of what it would look like on an actual functional ornithopter, but unfortunately there was too much friction for the mechanism to oscillate powered.
Additional Notes:
- Turn on closed captions if you haven't already
- The materials of this project included thin cardboard, corrugated cardboard, popsicle sticks, wire, bamboo skewers, cardstock, plastic bags, wooden dowels, and thread.
- You might notice that I was unfortunately unable to film some parts of the building process (attaching the wings, namely) are not included. I used thin plastic bags with decent flexibility, and used thread to sew it together since glue did not always work well.
- Does it fly? Unfortunately, not. Originally, I was designing this with hope that it could fly, but midway into building I realized it was too fragile for that. I'm not giving up the idea, but I think if I build this again to fly I'll make it smaller.
Thanks for stopping by, and if you have any questions or suggestions, please leave them below in the comments!

Please turn on the captions for extra instructions! Hi everyone, I wanted to make a video about drawing out functional gears with a compass. Popsicle Stick Articulated Finger Extensions Analysis

Hi there, this is a brief explanation/analysis of the finished articulated finger extensions. Although I already made a tutorial for them, there were some other things I wanted to share. When I brought them back inside, they worked again when they dried...
Articulated Finger Extensions with Popsicle Sticks Tutorial
มุมมอง 3.4Kปีที่แล้ว
Hi there! Since Halloween was coming up, I thought that I would create a tutorial for articulated finger extensions. Cardboard Pendulum Clock Mechanism Tutorial

Hi there, I recently made a pendulum clock mechanism, and I hope you find this tutorial helpful. If you want to make each "tick" exactly equal to one second, you can use the pendulum formula to determine its length. Sine Wave Automaton
มุมมอง 1.2Kปีที่แล้ว
Recently, I made a cardboard sine wave automaton. It was a fun project, but I ran into the most trouble around coordinating the conveyor belt and mechanism. Although, if you plan to replicate this project, I would probably suggest adding more teeth to the gears to improve ...

Have you ever watched Tim Burton's 9? Do you know if it's possible to make an aperture where the blades are able to move in such a way that the iris can move, rather than staying centered? I think it would be cool to make a character whose eyes were apertures and could move like the characters in that movie.

    • @cressyism
      @cressyism 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

I've never watched 9 before, but I do enjoy Tim Burton's work, and I thought the trailer was pretty cool. I see what you mean by the eyes moving, and while I'm not exactly sure how to do that, I've seen some pretty cool puppetry mechanisms before than manage a similar motion with the head or eyes. If you were to combine the iris mechanism with whatever the puppets use, I'm sure that'd be one way to copy that effect.

Usually the more precise the measurements, the better chance it has of working. This design of a pendulum clock mechanism was my first, and I believe there are many parts that could be improved, so go for whatever works best for you.

next time the arm wings and hand wings should be correctly sized. specifically, the span of a hand wing should be greater than that of the arm wing. an arm wing is formed by tissue and feathers spanning the gap of the arm hand bones. instead of powering the hand wing, it can be made to passively bend, during upstroke. hand wing, brown-gray arm wing, blue-green swanlovers.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Anatomy-Birds-Wing-BD4-600.jpg anatomy www.welcomewildlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Bird-wing-structure.-Shyamal.jpg

Usually problems with the pawl lie in its range and rotation. After you base the tip off of the shape of the ratchet, the rest could be visualized by creating some sort of anchor point. For this video, the pawl for the wheel ratchet was a lot better than the one for the parallel ratchet because it had better range. Thanks for stopping by!
