If you are not making mistakes then you are not learning anything... Good thing is that they have all been fortunately relatively small mistakes. Love what you do - be safe and Fair Winds! Cheers!
Good to see use of harness. Great to have another hand onboard. Love it, bit of weather, woohoo, wild ride guys. You know shit hapens, wet laptop doesnt register. Just one of those things. Great vid guys as always
I love long sailing passages like this. That wave splashing thru the hatch could happen to anyone that was just in the process of quickly going out side. Dan the man could mostly eliminate that problem if he used his skills to build a hard dodger around that hatch opening....all sailboats should have them to stand in the hatch and look around now and then without getting wet. That once "ready to fall apart" boat is now bringing you two a lot of pleasure after you fixed it up. Thank you!!
I experienced a lot of salt water over my laptop too and it stopped working. When asking for advise over the radio there was somebody who telling me to remove the battery and the hard disk. Rinse the whole with lots of clean water and let it dry for a couple of days. I did follow that instruction because I had nothing to lose… However, it helped and my MSI worked again as before…
Nice to see the washboard in place on passage (keep the hatch closed, as well!). Offshore racing tip: drill a small hole into it so you can attach a length of sash cord, tying the other end to the companionway stairs (or use a 'biner). In case of knockdown, if the hatch is partway open, the washboard may fall out, but stay with the boat. You can also cinch it down in rough weather so it CAN'T slip out.
Don't sweat it Kika. One of the cardinal rules of sailing is that things get wet on a boat. Balancing that with today's constant use and need for electronics, doesn't change the rule. Back up your backup plan and then back that up too. And then if you get knocked down or something, and everything gets wet anyway, Enjoy the day because you survived, you are alive, and you are sailing! Love your attitudes!
This was one of your best videos in my opinion. The sailing was awesome. Btw...it’s just a laptop...the crew and boat are safe (all that really matters). 😊
So impressed with your wind vane! So sorry (that your lap top got hit) hope it was okay, there will always be an oops moment every now and again. Lovely photos of the dolphins!
Wise words Dan. I feel the frustration inside, and you seemed to have held your composure well. Let's face it, it's hard to get mad with Kika, but I think that's a lesson learned..... Moving on.. 🙄
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for actually showing us some great footage of the passage. Now that's what I call a SAILING video. Ü (Some channels just tell you about it and move on) Also nice to see the safety aspect when people are clipped in and wearing their PFD! So sorry about the laptop. But shit happens. And so special that you owned up to it and didn't blame it on the dolphins. You know how naughty they can be. Ü PEACE OUT!
FISHING TIP: Whenever you come over a underwater drop off, throw your line in the water and troll. You'd be surprised how much activity is within a half mile of that spot
We've all done stupid things at sea! Don't worry, we all make mistakes and even better, learn from them next time. I've smashed my Kindle three times at sea and finally got a case so that it doesn't happen anymore! Haha I love following your adventures until I've got enough saved to go on my own. Hopefully we'll see you, our old boat is in Curacao! Massive respect for you both doing all the maintenance on your own. Keep on sailing.
Blame the dolphins. The goddess already is too sad about that splash. This too will pass. You two seem like a pretty ideal couple with a special calling that is unfolding in a great way. Highest Blessings
Space bags underway with desecant in a farad cage or oven? Did you get a plot of the gulf stream in the region off Honduras during the northerly. The period looked short but the cape horn didn't seem to let Uma round up on a reach or deep reach.
Phew! Just got up to date of your efforts. I found your channel just a week or two back. I really like your electric motor and the copper hull "paint" which seems to work very well! And the attitude of doing things! Cheers and be good! Can't wait for the next little project you're up to... ;)
Yeah....it's dead! I literally poured salt water out of it. It was basically underwater, while running. Not too much corrosion, but something internal is fried. Batter, mother board etc. Hope the hardrive is ok though. Won't know until we make it back to the USA. At least it wasn't Kika brand new one.
Sailing Uma internal parts on those laptops are repairable. I offer a mail in repair service and I would be more than willing to take a look at it for you guys. Love the videos and if I can help in anyway I will. From one sailor to another.
Don't take this the wrong way, but it's nice to see that even you guys who are sailing all around get seasick. It's what keeps me off boats. I would be hurling non-stop. Glad Sev felt better after a little while.
I noticed in the video that you guys had the hatch opened a number of times, with the washboard in place, I would suggest that you make a flap that attaches to the top of the companionway hatch so that when the hatch is closed the flap covers the entire companionway opening. I made mind by using small piece of new Dacron (Sunbrella will work), stiffened the flap using 19mm sail battens equally spaced with the first one at the bottom. The flap itself should be approx. 50mm wider than the companionway opening on either side. (the battens will prevent the flap from collapsing inward on windy days. Looking forward to the next video.
Thanks for the great idea. We've though about doing something like that ever since watching Jean Du Sud. It's on the list for when we get our Sailrite in a few months.

Wow, GORGEOUS sunrise footage at the beginning! Sorry about Dan’s MacBook. Hope it’s salvageable. Curious how you store them if they’re not “out.” Can you keep them in dry bags whenever you’re not using them just in case?
When the sea is calm please check your repair work on the keel. It’s probably great but it doesn’t hurt to check for cracks! Water would be leaking in if there was a problem
Do we have to wait to find out if the laptop made it or not? Poor Seth not feeling well. The cushions look real good and looks like they are keeping in the bunk good. Take care.

Excelent footage - v much enjoy your video's..... Could you pls tell me the brand of the folding dingy you have tied on your deck? Thx and happy sailing!
Thx! The Porta Bote seems still too big for our little sailing boat (24 ft) :-( but looks like a really good option for cruising. Good website too btw, will check it out later - bye for now....
What’s Dan worried about? He could make a whole new computer out of 3 grains of rice, some duct tape and a paper cup of epoxy! Hope it was okay. Stay safe.
Hope that the rice works for the laptop. Waiting to see the footage from Guatemala as we want that to be our sail destination next year. Good luck till next week.
I think that was the first time I heard a slightly cross word between the two of you. That could just be editing.😉I’d be ashamed and embarrassed if everyone heard some of the things I’ve said to my saintly wife in moments of frustration. It doesn’t usually take me very long to apologize though.
Question, How many rpm have your motor and how big is your prop and last but not least how fast do you have to sail to start your motor to get generating power. Great footage again.
I'm going to build a 48 foot catamaran, with a 10kW BLDC 3500 rpm motor 2 pieces one in each hull, as i'm told the propulsin works better on low rpm on the prop so i'm thinking about a 1:3 ratio so i have around 1000 rpm on the prop with is 17". They told me that with a big prop and low rpm on it you better regenerate electricity. But i just wonder what there experiance is.

Awww Kika......look mistakes are happen but it's only a laptop, laptops are plentiful and can be easily replaced. However you've learned a valuable lesson and all of you (including UMA) are safe :-) Dan will cheer up shortly......nevermind ;-)
If they need to motor in an emergency, they have an electric motor. With batteries charged by solar (and, I think, prop regen). Plenty of videos of other cruisers getting in trouble when their diesel malfunctions.
CorwynGC if I remember from other episodes, electric is very limited to manuver in harbor and only for limited time. I was just thinking at sea, storm, sails limited and need to motor for safety.
They don't use the motor much, sitting becalmed when others would be motoring. But energy is limited whether you have batteries or a tank of diesel. Many people seem to think a diesel is more reliable for safety, but I don't see the evidence supporting that. But source aside, safety in a sailboat can't really come from a motor.
We're still not sure what these "emergency motoring" situations are. We keep hearing references to them, but have yet to have one. We have sails and know how to use them quite well. We've sailed in and out of rivers, marina, docks, anchorages and moorings without ever using the motor.
@@SailingUma Well then, learn from an awesome couple who has been cruising for 30 years. It's a well-known fact that dolphins have some weird animus toward laptops. Dolphins are literally the worst when it comes to computer repair.

Wow, that was one hell of a sail! One of the ones you will recall when old decrepit and grey. Never forget, everything else is predictable.
I hate when the storms take your wind away when they're gone, bobbing around with flapping sails is maddening until the wind fills back in.
Hey MJ Sailing! That's all, carry on..
