  • Keeping trees manageable is easy enough. How about growing a fruit bush? Did you know you can keep your fruit tree under 5 feet tall? Again, Tom shows you how.

    I just want to thank you, after seeing many of your videos I've become confident that I can also keep fruit trees even in my tiny garden. In the start I felt a bit overwhelmed by how much you were pruning your trees, but now I feel excited seeing how this works, and works well indeed! Cutting means give way to the new and keep it manageable!

    Thank you very much. Came across by accidents and I am hooked. I learned so much. Its 02:39 early morning and i am hooked on Dave Wilson nursery videos. I know what words coming next. As soon as frost disappear I will be planting four fruit trees in my UK 'back yard' 2 feet apart and will watch and let you know how I am doing. Thanks again.

    Thank God you know this essential info which I've never been able to learn from other people! This makes a massive difference to entire yard space & what can be planted!!!
    Based on this knowledge you have you'd also be one of the few who'd know the answer to this other very important question:
    Does keeping the tree so small also keep the root ball much smaller & the roots from spreading out so far? A much smaller tree above ground can fit much closer to the retaining wall which separates me from my neighbour down the hill without hanging over his yard, BUT if the root system isn't smaller/shorter then I'd still have to plant it a long distance from retaining wall so the roots wont push the retaining wall over.
    I've always imagined that the roots of a tree would spread out to approx the same distance from the trunk as the branches do so as to hold the tree stable, but yet again, I could be wrong!
    I know this information would help many people in regards how close/far from houses, pipes, fences etc they can plant a tree which will be pruned to a very small size!
    I know MANY people would watch a youtube video that explained "How far from house/pipes/fence to plant trees?"

    • @DaveWilsonTrees
      @DaveWilsonTrees  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The roots would be normal, but fruit trees don't have invasive roots so you could plant close to the wall without worry.

      +Dave Wilson Nursery Thankyou for sacrifcially giving your time by answering, because clearly you are very busy, This is greatly appreciated!!! I have all the info I need now.
      I've now subscribed to your channel as I'm so relieved & impressed to finally be able to find so much great info that's so well explained that I've been searching for but couldnt find before.
      Your espalier pruning info I found today on some of your other videos is wonderful & I finally now also have the knowledge & confidence I need to prune all my espalier stone fruit trees Ive planted.
      Other people's videos on espalier are almost only on apples, & the rare other videos on other fruit had just confused me more!
      You have no idea how relieved & encouraged I now feel because my organic urban backyard orchard I've been building up the last 3yrs is my only therapeutic outlet, & now its finally fully therapeutic since your good clear thorough teaching videos have cleared up so much for me! THANKYOU sincerely! You are doing a brilliant job!

    just remember most fruit trees and such will bolt and and shoot water spouts if more than 30% is cut. It creates a hormone unbalance where the auxin is less than the cytokinin. There are many videos online now that discuss it in detail to avoid a fight with a tree over excessive growth and poor root development.

    We recommend a copper based dormant spray. Ask you're trusted local retail nursery for a brand.

    Tom, thnx for continuing to educate the backyard orchard grower. I live in Virginia and your vids have helped me tremendously. I currently have (15) fruit trees edging my 7/10 acre lot. Gran Smth Apple, Red Del Apple, 4-Pear, Paw Paw, Sugar Cane & Ling JuJube, Gwang Yang Persimmon, 2-Urban Apple Green and Red, Russ Pomegranate, Celeste Fig all size controlled & pruned. 1.) Can I get by without spraying? 2.) I could add up to 6 more what would you suggest? 3.) Va vs Cali zones & climate, citrus?

    Do you have a video that shows the difference between flowering wood and non-flowering wood? Is flowering wood the part that has buds on it? My peach trees are only 3 years old, so they're still pretty little!

    All of your trees are pretty short but, I have a pomegranate tree that has about a 4ft trunk and then reaches about 12ft high. It has branches that spread outward about 5ft it seems. The tree came with the house and I really want to take care of it.

    • @DaveWilsonTrees

      For overgrown trees that you want to bring down, do so in thirds. Top it now, and then again after you harvest, then again in winter. Pome's are very hardy and vigorous, so it will come back.

    Thank you so much for all this great info! Maybe Tom is doing this but I don't see where he is cleaning/sanitizing his shears between trees? Isn't this an important step?

    Maybe instead of hard pruning you should consider bending branches downwards to increase fruiting and stop vegetative growth?

    For all the trees in your backyard orchard set up that you are pruning to low and small, are they standard rootstock or some kind of dwarfing?

    What is the purpose of spraying? Do all fruit trees have the same necessity regarding being sprayed?

    • @DaveWilsonTrees
      @DaveWilsonTrees  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most common is a dormant copper spray, mostly for peach leaf curl. Most people spray for fungal issues. Not all fruit types require the same.

      @@DaveWilsonTrees Right, so far other fruit trees (apples, pears, apricots, cherries, plums etc.) it isn't that crucial?

    Can I prune non-fruit trees this way, to keep the height lower (assuming they are young trees)? I'm particularly thinking of star magnolia, ivory silk lilac, and linden; however, it would be nice to know about other tree varieties.

    • @DaveWilsonTrees
      @DaveWilsonTrees  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not recommended for ornamental trees but it is ultimately your choice. A certified arborist would never recommend it but we see it done all the time

    In case of fruit trees grown in big pots. Do we still need to remove fruits in first 2 years just like we do for plants in ground in order to make stable and balanced structure?
    Given trees in pots I have are dwarf and super dwarf plum varieties.
    Thanks

  • @owlprophet1
    @owlprophet1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    We need to know if these are normal size fruit trees to start with, or are they dwarf trees?
    I imagine these trees are all dwarf trees to start with for you to be able to prune them so as to keep them so small, but I'm really hoping I'm wrong because I accidently bought & planted an apricot tree without noticing it wasnt a Dwarf tree, & so I think I'll have to get rid of it unless I can prune it so as to keep it very small.

    • @DaveWilsonTrees
      @DaveWilsonTrees  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Susie Whitney These are not Genetic Dwarf trees, they are standard varieties on standard rootstocks. You can keep any fruit tree at your desired height with summer pruning.

    How much minimum distance between trees is required for this type of low 5 foot high fruit tree system ?
    I would like to plant inter specific fruit trees mainly spicezee, Cot n candy, flavour rouge and sugar n spice like this.

    is it possible to keep peach and nectarine trees this low? If so would you need to top the plant in its first year?

    • @DaveWilsonTrees
      @DaveWilsonTrees  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, very easily. Particularly with younger trees. Not a good idea to top older, larger caliper peach and nectarine, when planting one of these you need to leave the lowest branching, then you can prune lower if needed once the tree is established.

    Will nut trees produce if you prune them to the same height that you do fruit trees?

    • @DaveWilsonTrees

      Almond trees work, most other nut trees are not a good choice.
