Víkingur Ólafsson - Bach: Prelude & Fugue, BWV 855a: 1. Prelude No.10 in B Minor (Transcr. Siloti)
Víkingur Ólafsson is a musical free spirit with a mission. He first made the classical world sit up and listen in early 2017 with his recording of solo piano works by Philip Glass - a fascinating journey through the time and space of their minimalist structures. Glass is now followed by Bach. Ólafsson’s second Deutsche Grammophon album, the pithily entitled Bach, contains a mixture of original works and transcriptions, which the pianist has woven together in intriguing style.
“It would all mean nothing without Bach,” says Ólafsson. “If Glass’s music is minimal, then Bach’s is maximal!” Having studied his music intensively, he here casts new light on some of the composer’s many different faces.

Vikingur Olafson is becoming one of my most favourite pianists.
Briljant....the more I listen to it and the more I try to play it myself this way, the more silent I become....
There is a “lightness” to your approach. Reminds me of the North country with a hint of ice. Fresh and clean.
A very special unusual pianist of great sensitivity
Una spirale di luce e colori senza fine! Una pioggia di meraviglia
No need to exaggerate. No need to embellish, the eternal music of Bach!. Olafsson's interpretation stresses the simple and ethereal quality of the genius...
Not at all.... Prof mw
It's not bach mate 😂
Yes
You could play Bach backwards and it would sound good
Wunderschön
Perfection. Thank you.
I’ve got this on endless repeat. It’s like a love melody from God.
Bach melodies were composed for God 😇🙏❤ That's why they're the most beautiful. Music for angels
Music from a huge space of deep truth.
Beautiful, how did I not discover this piece earlier? 🎹🎶
You are extremely gifted on your delivery of amazing melodies on top of melodies. Very romantic. The pianissimo the second time though took my breath away. An extremely soft sound would seem to be a difficult skill to pull off. You are right on the edge of not sounding the note at all. Bravo!
Una interpretación absolutamente asombrosa. ¡Casi me hace llorar tanta belleza! ¡Imposible vivir sin oír al gigante de gigantes, San Johann Sebastian Bach!
Bravo 🎹 Wow Spectacular Bravo 🎹
Thank you.
You always make me happy
Спасибо большое !
stunning
This music takes you into another realm, into the very core of the heart and soul. The feeling which transmits Olef, gifted and unique piano Artist, is subtle, hypnotizing. What a perfect performance in each and every sound!
Thank you
Guille. Mexico
He tops my list of Great pianiste
Beautiful!
Excellent execution !
Flawless performance and also very pleasing aesthetically. Nice touch with the reflections in the editing - just like the music!
This dude definitely knows how to talk in Bach's! I admire all the pianists who dare Bach's but only few actually find themselves locked in Bach's demand for perfection. I am glad that I see Olafsson is one of those few.
Yes but its not bach
As you mentioned, Mr Olafsson, Bach is a free country. What matters is how sincere, lyrical and skilful the execution of a score. In this respect you are mightily impressive. I see you as the spiritual child of both Glenn Gould and Sviatoslav Richter, although I am aware how cliché that sounds. You seem to connect with the intimate voices of Bach well beyond what other piano players have accustomed us to. Maybe Maria Joao Pires showed (too few times) she too, 'gets' Bach on the piano.
I would love to hear you on the harpsichord; you have a touch that would suit it. When played like Gilbert, Pinnock, Ross, Leonhardt and Dantone (the latter on Handel), the same infinite expansion can be heard. I am grateful for your work and I do not believe the small amount I paid for your album on TH-cam is in any way a fair exchange for the emotion I gained from your playing. I can only thank you.
que c'est beau et bien joué, merci !!
Just intense and marvellous !!
Excelente interpretación maravilloso pianista excelso
Quelle délicatesse...un enchantement ! Et cette mélodie qui s’envole...
бесподобно! восхитительно! - Браво...
Wooow!!!!
Que bien toca el piano vikingur y cuanto sentimiento en esta obra me gustan las obras con sentimiento no notas sin sentido sin corazón
So far the best interpretation
( after Gilels 🧐)
Hahaha. I love it. I agree.
I agree. Gilels is one of his piano idols btw.
@@cmonclair27 I'm glad to learn that. Thanks
@@johncitizen9540 You're welcome John. As matter of fact he dedicates this organ sonata by Bach to the Maestro's memory. Here's the YT link: th-cam.com/video/4wtwv6h47YU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=v6TopEtIQ8uWc3rc
If you look at the score of this work, it looks like a children's song, but magic hands and a soul full of passion turn this into a masterpiece. What an outstanding performance this. It stops the time around you and makes you feel like flying through the gates of heaven...
The best!))
My frend Kate says Vikingur is transcendental and I agree!
Magnifique!!!! I am working on this. Slowly.
Best version ever... Prof mw
😍
👏
Steinway....ugh, such a beautiful piano. I miss playing those babies.
Arrangement: Alexander Siloti
👏❤️
I’ve heard you yesterday in Weilburg /Hessen and this peace was the last one. It’s so incredible to hear you with such a soft and warm playing right hand.
Can anyone explain what he does at 1:25? The sheet music I have only goes up to there. Does he repeat a portion at that point? Which one?
I guess you merely have to repeat it all over again but this time while voicing the left hand. It is like a switch between both melodies.
@@alexbrk1157 Oh, I see. That's interesting. Thank you.
Yes. Second hand with arpeggios. Heard this in Giles version
can someone please help. What CD is this version available on? Thx
The link is in the description. The album is simply entitled "Johann Sebastian Bach", Vikingur Olafsson, 2018. This piece is #27 of 35.
Mon Dieu,c’est déjà du Chopin. Bach est vraiment extraordinaire...
Chopin c'était Hayer, Bach c'était avant Hayer.
This is a complete rearrangement of the original version BWV 855.....the left-hand theme is transposed to the right, played way too fast for that, the presto part was almost preferred, this part was completely left out....
But the score does not say first chords and then arpeggios in left hand.
Seitdem ich Bach von
Vikingur höre , gefallen mir die anderen Interpreten irgendwie nicht mehr ! 😢
I love this, but did bach make several versions of this prelude since the melody is left out compared to this one: th-cam.com/video/Lv3PFv9YCrg/w-d-xo.html, or is it just creative freedom?
this is siloti's transcription of the bach e minor prelude
@@ashenflufff Thank you for clarifying. I know Bach also has many versions of the same projects so I thought maybe it was two different variations.
Would anyone know where we can find the music score that corresponds to Vikingur Olafsson's recording?
try imslp.org
I assume from the wording of your question that you suspect Ólafsson may be using a slightly different score than the usual Siloti score (Bach/Siloti BWV 855a: webzoom.freewebs.com/fjgajewski/Bach-S4-6-06.pdf ). For what my opinion is worth, it sounds (and looks) to me as if Ólafsson is NOT arpeggiating most of the chords and may indeed be using an alternative score. For instance, transcriber Doug Gould (douggould@hotmail.co.uk) offers three tasteful alternatives based on the oft-cited performance of Emil Gilels (th-cam.com/video/Yu06WnXlPCY/w-d-xo.html ), two of which do not demand an enormous span. As of April 2021 Doug was still offering his transcriptions for purchase (I purchased one for £8.00). They are nicely demonstrated and discussed by an expert (Paul Barton) here: th-cam.com/video/oKxUyEzyS7M/w-d-xo.html.
@@jamesgregoric5786 Many thanks!
Just playing the left hand?
First section a little fast.
.
Olafsson even transforms Bach into a pedal-drowned soundtrack, horrible.
