A Good Man Goes To War is easily one of the best episodes of this season. It has a dark theme, we get a look at other characters the Doctor has met off-screen, and just when you think the day is safe, Kovarian pulls a "LOL, NOPE!" and the Doctor is defeated. This episode also acts as an inside look into the character of the Doctor, and the fact that after millions of adventures and defeating countless monsters, he's gone from a stubborn scientist running through time and space to something much darker and more powerful.
She did experience him holding her, though, and he saw and felt her reactions to him. It's a question of philosophy, really, like is seeing someone on skype as good as seeing them through a glass window? At least they got to meet each other. =)

I remember when I was first watching this episode, I was so hoping that the solider girl would be revealed to be Jenny, the Doctor's daughter from the 10th's run. We'd seen regeneration energy crop up a few times by this point, sometimes without changing a timelord's appearance, sometimes changing it a little while after the first blast. I'd been hoping that Jenny's appearance would have changed sometime after she flew off in that ship back in the day, and she'd been trying to find her way back to the Doctor ever since. But, given that the Doctor has enemies here and there, she learned not to outright say that she was his daughter. And then when she finally saw him again, she couldn't tell him.
+gieltje309 "The Nine have left Middle-Earth. They reach the Doctor on Midsummer's Eve, disguised as monks without heads." Yeah, kind of a stretch, but I did the best I could.

She is going to watch the 50th with me and wanted me to show the best episodes. The look on her face when they show the translation of Melody Pond's name on the baby cloth was priceless. :)
It's managed so well. Most people get it when River explains the Forest people have no word for Pond because there's only the river. Putting together the whole Melody/Song couplet on their own makes everyone feel a little bit smarter than the Doctor.

This was actually the third episode I watched, courtesy of a friend that I told that I was starting to watch the show. It also didn't help that the two episodes I had seen before were David Tennant episodes- the finale of series 4, to be exact, because they were on TV. Talk about spoilers...
UGH my friend's mum accidentally ruined the Captain Jack twist for me (WARNING: SPOILERS). It was the first episode with the Face of Bo in it, and she walked in and said, before anyone could stop her, "Oh it's Jack".
I love this episode, this part where they have their final stand against the monks to protect Melody at all costs not to mention the doctor unable to prevent it pure doctor who magic
Doctor, brave and good, He turned away from violence, When he understood, The falling of the silence. Tick tock, goes the clock, He gave her all he could give her, Tick tock, goes the clock, Now prison waits for River

Just the fact that Melody Pond is really River Song and that their daughter has been with them all this time and that she married the Doctor is amazing
My biggest problem with River Song is that she can regenerate. Both of her parents are human. There's absolutely no way she could have a Time Lords' most powerful ability even if she was conceived in the Time Vortex. At most, she'd just have a slightly longer lifespan and a better perception of time than a normal person. Honestly, giving River the ability to regenerate was completely pointless anyway. Her timeline is so out of sync that she could still have had that friendship with Amy and Rory, jumped forwards a couple of decades whilst looking for the Doctor, and then come back as Alex Kingston without shoving in something totally unbelievable.
Probably commented here before but "when a good man goes to war" is definitely about Rory. Dude died, came back and broke his programming for Amy and then held point for a potential last stand because his kid was at risk. As a dad myself, swords at the ready with a plasma pistol, gotta do anything for the spawnlings
The ganger- Melody Pond's death haunted me, though she was a synthetic baby, Melody 2.0 still deserved to live a normal life with Amy, Rory, and her biologically-conceived sister Melody/River Song. The Silence are douchebags, for terminating an innocent child and traumatizing the universe for eons.
I like how everyone seems to forget that The Rebel Flesh even happened. Don't forget the whole part about the eyes of the gangers, and how even the ones who show no signs of resistance are still beings. So the fake Melody Pond and the fake Amy Pond were both beings separate from the original people- even if they were never in control.
"At all costs," seems like the worst possible phrase you could scream with Strax in the room. That dude can and would set off a bomb that would destroy everything on and in that base EXCEPT the baby and call it a tactical victory.
Could you imagine how traumatic it would be for you as a parent, if what you believe to be your kid just disintegrated in your arms like that? Yeah, a lot of peoples minds would just snap.
I’ve been trying to find the name of the song. And I can’t find it anywhere. I love that music... but it’s not in any of the songs, and it’s different from the Doctor’s normal theme (I’ve checked everything).
Actually did some additional scrolling here, and thanks to some lovely people near the beginning of the comments I found the track, or well there’s two unreleased versions. 😅 I wasn’t sure if you ever found it a few months ago, so I wanted to help out too! It’s derived from this version from the “Don’t” moment in an episode from Tennant’s era: th-cam.com/video/YSMSk924STc/w-d-xo.html
I love this fight. Everyone except Rory was introduced earlier in the same episode, but you still feel invested in them all, because they're all cool characters and they're all risking their lives for Melody.
“A good man goes to war” is more like “The Empire Strikes Back” from the world of Doctor Who. "Impossible Astronaut" and "Day of the Moon" are "A New Hope" and "Wedding of River Song" is Return of the Jedi" And what "Let's Kill Hitler" is, I don't know. And if you compare with the films about the Avengers, then “A Good Man Goes to War” is more like “Infinity War” "Impossible Astronaut" and "Day of the Moon"-"Avengers" and "Age of Ultron". "Wedding of River Song" -"Endgame".
Honestly. Rory's combat ability is so damn high. Shame he never got to hang out with Jack. I think having an Uncle Jack the Immortal would've beem amazing for River and Doctor. also it would've had some interesting connotations with his kind of lore with the headless monnks.. they would have been made aware of him here. and the potential for him to have lost his time machine here.
I’m convinced that scene with the pirate captain was originally written for Jack - he bursts onto the screen in a major surprise, cocks his gun and says “Captain Jack Harkness, and who are you?”
man every one says the weeping angels are the scariest thing in the world i personally thought the silence and the headless monks were worse the headless monk chant just freaks me out
FACT: Did you know that originally, Steven Moffat wrote Captain Jack to be in this episode? But unfortunately John Barrowman was too busy with filming Torchwood. Would have been interesting to see Capt. Jack with Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor.
I never understand how people like Kovarian can talk like and do they do and not see how they are the villain, even in real life. Also the metaphors of miscarriage with this storyline are painful.
A Good Man Goes To War is easily one of the best episodes of this season. The split I didn't mind so much, the screwing up of the season arcs in the second half I did mind.
This is one of my favourite 11th doctor episodes
Sends shivers down my spine love this episode
1:22 That's the music from the end of "Midnight"
Goose bumps from that episode
Dammit Doctor, your door slam made Amy's baby turn into dairy!
Surely I can't be the only one that thought Lorna was a great character for this episode!?
Id like to just point out the logistics of a Headless Monk Chanting anything
"Oh they'll understand... It's just me. Only silly old me..."
*[CHOP]*
Yep. They understood perfectly.
0:37
It is similar sound from waters of mars, the end part when it is show the history change.
What’s the track name that starts playing at 1:29 ? I’ve been on a quest to find it a while and haven’t yet
This episode was the DW version of endgame
“A good man goes to war” is more like “The Empire Strikes Back” from the world of Doctor Who. "Impossible Astronaut" and "Day of the Moon" are "A New Hope" and "Wedding of River Song" is Return of the Jedi" And what "Let's Kill Hitler" is, I don't know.
And if you compare with the films about the Avengers, then “A Good Man Goes to War” is more like “Infinity War”
"Impossible Astronaut" and "Day of the Moon"-"Avengers" and "Age of Ultron".
"Wedding of River Song" -"Endgame".
Stolen Earth/Journey's End was a better Endgame than this. AGMGTW is good, but it's surrounded by so much mediocrity and bad.
Honestly. Rory's combat ability is so damn high.
Shame he never got to hang out with Jack. I think having an Uncle Jack the Immortal would've beem amazing for River and Doctor.
also it would've had some interesting connotations with his kind of lore with the headless monnks.. they would have been made aware of him here.
and the potential for him to have lost his time machine here.
they actually wanted to put him in this episode, but the actor was busy filming "miracle day"
I’m convinced that scene with the pirate captain was originally written for Jack - he bursts onto the screen in a major surprise, cocks his gun and says “Captain Jack Harkness, and who are you?”
I would scream too if my baby dissolved into mayonnaise and/or splooge.
[_squirt_]
Oh, God.
Myotic TeSeract Thank you for making my day.
Myotic TeSeract Also, how do you make your writing italic?
Loki Laufeyson VII Idk but might be one of those keyboards
BabypineappleZ12 it's like this *ghfhhcd* you put a kind of letter like - this. -hate my life-
Loki Laufeyson VII put a _ before and after the writing
This episode made me cry the first and second...and third and...oh what the hell I cry every time I watch it!
I wish more was revealed about Kovarian in that series she is one of my favourite DW villains
2:25, that's the Soresu lightsaber form which Obi-Wan Kenobi uses. Only, Rory has a gun.
I love how the doctor tries to screwdriver the door.
When the monks started there attack prayer it was so intimidating but rather cool
man every one says the weeping angels are the scariest thing in the world i personally thought the silence and the headless monks were worse the headless monk chant just freaks me out
00:12 "against Who?"
awe.. I love the part with the order "Tell them to run away" :( shows the true darkness of the doctor.
Is it just me, or does the attack prayer send shivers down my spine
A Good Man Goes to War... To protect a child. Let that sink in.
"Attack prayer" - the Catholic Church never changes
FACT: Did you know that originally, Steven Moffat wrote Captain Jack to be in this episode? But unfortunately John Barrowman was too busy with filming Torchwood. Would have been interesting to see Capt. Jack with Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor.
3:39 Flesh avatar of melody melts.
This battle looked pretty cool when I was younger.. shame it doesn't live up with age. Still, it's the story that makes this battle epic as a whole
It's a lesson so many directors still need to learn...it's the story that makes a battle badass most of all, not just flashy choreography.
Well at least the monks had their head in the game
Badum tish.
I never understand how people like Kovarian can talk like and do they do and not see how they are the villain, even in real life. Also the metaphors of miscarriage with this storyline are painful.
