Predicting the World Snooker Championship 2024!

- Another unforgettable fortnight of Crucible drama is almost upon us so here's our preview and predictions for the biggest tournament in snooker - the World Championship!
Snooker presenter Abigail Davies is joined by Sporting Life expert Richard Mann as well as journalist and Talking Snooker podcaster Nick Metcalfe to guide you through each quarter the draw and, hopefully, predict the eventual champion.
The panel of three debate Ronnie O'Sullivan's chances of winning a record-breaking EIGHTH world title that would also see him complete a clean sweep of Triple Crown titles in the same season for the first time in his legendary career, while they also assess whether John Higgins and Mark Selby could be appearing at the Crucible for the last time.
Star names including Luca Brecel, Shaun Murphy, Judd Trump and Mark Williams are also discussed and the trio ponder which 'outsiders' can mount a lengthy run.

For me, Judd Trump is the clear favourite this year. He's in the form of his life and back to his best after a patchy, inconsistent last 4/5 years. Should have (on paper) won several World Championships (not just one) and If he plays well, only a handful of players can stop him.
You can never write off Ronnie O'Sullivan - even if he often appears disinterested and out-of-sorts, he can suddenly put the afterburners on and destroy even the best opponent from out of nowhere. Is he showing signs of decline? Maybe. Or maybe not. He's already won five titles this season and only a fool would bet against him.
Equally, Mark Williams should be considered an outside favourite. He's won three tournaments this season and has enjoyed one of his best ever seasons. Even at 49 he looks to have at least one more World Championship in him (tricky first round match not withstanding.)
Of course, Mark Allen (long overdue a first World Championship) or Shaun Murphy (a multiple finalist and former winner who has shown flashes of his best form over the last few years) and Mark Selby (admittedly out of form this season) are all very strong contenders, and it wouldn't surprise me if one of these three were to win it this year.
I'm not backing Luca Brecel to retain the title because his form has dipped since he won the tournament 12 months ago and he appears to have been resting on his laurels. Having said that, I didn't expect him to get far last time round, stranger things have happened and when his game clicks, he can beat anyone.
There are other players with the ability to go on and win it - such as Kyren Wilson, Jack Lisowski and Ding - all of those have world-class levels of talent but not necessarily the temperament to match. They all have a history (to varying degrees) of folding under pressure and going AWOL on the big occasion.
Of course, there are a number of Chinese players - such as Zhang Anda or Si Jiahui - who should not be discounted as they ae quite capable of going deep into this tournament.

Going back to Shaun Murphy - he's had a quiet season but will arrive in Sheffield as fresh as a daisy. I hope he doesn't do too much commentary and concentrates on practice because being in the weakest quarter of the draw and a HUGE 25/1 that is one of the best prices I've seen for a world class player. Nothing to fear from Lyu Haotian in his opener either. Great each way chance!
Why not wait for after judgement day and the draw to make predictions? Half the players not mentioned!

NO WAY the World Championship should be held abroad. We know the Crucible is too small a venue ,how about the Ally Pally which holds so many more people and has the best atmosphere?

Selby played shit against Gary Wilson at the Tour Championship but that's snooker you can't play great snooker every match, everyone has off days yet when Selby has an off day he cries like a baby well that's snooker even Ronnie O'Sullivan has off days that's snooker for you..... Impossible to play perfect snooker all the time you can't just threaten to retire you have to be patient until your form returns because snooker is all about patience on the table and off the table especially if your form is crap or your having a bad season, you have to be patient and cling to hope and just wait for things to improve further ahead otherwise nothing good will come if you just give in.
No one mentions Selby as a winner....he has fallen off the cliff. I can't stand watching him play. So slow.

Murphy I don't want to see win because the tantrum he had when the amateur Si beat him.
I'll be astounded if O'Sullivan doesn't win for the 8th time. He's primed and ready. 9/4 not great odds but about right. Think I'll back him in running when he starts messing about and loses a few frames for fun and practice and price might lengthen. Decent preview worth a watch.

with Betfred this morning (max stake £100). That represents value but I'm not someone who bets on the Rocket so left it well alone.
A century break made in every match @ 7/1 though. If I can get through the first round the bet should land but Milkins v Junxu and Ford v Walden could be attitioal battles and a danger to the bet. We'll see........
