I used my knife once when I was on the CT... to cut an apple that a day hiker blessed me with. The tweezers and scissors in my Swiss Army Knife are literally more useful than the blade itself. Using it for self defense isn't even a consideration
@Jacob.Towsley the CT was amazing, it blows my mind that it isn't way more popular than it is. I want to do it again if that says anything. Depending on life circumstances I am planning to go back in August '24
I keep a knife, a flashlight, a tourniquet, quickclot, and a .40cal on my person everywhere I go. The knife and flashlight are the only tools I have used everyday of my life. Those two are the most important for me to EDC.
Humans have been carrying and using knives, and axes, for centuries. If your outdoor approach does not involve bushcraft, shelter construction, food prep, etc. then I suppose this approach is doable. But, for the weight and ease of carry, having a knife available if you need it is a very good thing. I would imagine that Mr. Towsley, like me, has a spare tire in his car/truck. I can't speak for him, but I have not had a flat tire that required changing on the road in this century.
A good analogy, the only difference is that I don’t have to carry the spare tire the truck does all the work for me. Not that a knife makes much of a difference in weight but I like to see how light I can get my pack down to so every ounce / gram counts.
Setting aside the idea of using a knife as a weapon, a knife is a utilitarian tool used for daily tasks and possibly for outdoor survival in emergencies. To go into the woods without at least a pocketknife is just foolish.
I agree it is a great tool, just not one that I feel is necessary for me. I think everyone should make their own decisions, don’t take anyone’s word for it.
@@Jacob.TowsleyYou dont need a knife until you do. Then you will regret not having it. I still think its more of a tool than protection. If you want protection, take a gun.
You should carry a pocket knife with you at ALL times not just hiking...it fits in your pocket!!! What do they weigh 5-10 ounces.....you'll remember the day you needed it and didn't have it for the rest of your life !
It’s a very useful tool. I think most hikers would say the same, that they don’t use it for self protection at all. That’s just what I hear from most non-hikers, “what about bears and people?” Thought I’d share my thoughts on it, mainly for my friends and family
Bad advice. Cutting rope, whittling stick to sharpen point , who knows what else other than bear defense? I can not imagine a situation where Anyone would say / I am so glad I did not have a knife with me! I’ll be honest he lost me when he apologies for something he was born with , race and sex.
Everyone should make their own choice, it’s just works for me and I thought I’d share. I’m not apologizing for being a white man, just sorry that other people that aren’t have to deal with certain situations. I think a knife is a very handy thing to have, I just don’t feel like I need it.
Well i think you are far too trusting of others and what if momma bear cant be scared off as you will end up a crunchy snack for the bear so my advice is to not be so trusting. Now for the knife if you needed a bigger weapon to fight off a bear or other preditor you could make a spear with the knife and that spear could also make a good hiking staff but you should have at least a basic survival kit just in case its needed some day. You might say i wont ever need that item but its far better to have it and never need it then to not have it and then suddenly need it.

Exactly, it can be a very useful tool but you can get by without it. The CT is on my list, how did you like it?

A SILLY GOOFY statement
Dude, you need a knife going to th grocery store. Its a tool more than anything and everyone needs a pocket knife.
I agree it is a very useful tool in many situations. I’m more inclined to carry a knife with me when in a city than I am in the woods.
