- This is a full review as well an instructional video on setting up the Kukenam Sky 3 rooftop Tent I purchased in 2017. Sometime between 2017 and 2020 this company was bought and the new owners have renamed this tent the Explorer Series Kukenam 3 but it is the exact tent as the one in this review they just charge $259 more dollars now,

Very informative review. I have a 2010 Outback and I wasn't sure if there was a roof tent I could use and if I would have to buy new crossbars. Looks like the answer is yes there is and no you don't, yay!. Thank you!

I was actually doing this for one of my friends so it was no hassle! I have not seen a lot of good videos on Subaru’s and rooftop tents so I wanted to make a good one for everyone out there!
Tepui was bought out by Thule... The new tents say Thule Tepui for the 2020 model year.

So glad we came across this video. We have a 2011 Outback and are considering this model. One random question, how long did install take and how many people were needed to get the tent on top? We are considering ordering for curbside pickup at an REI that is about an hour away, and installing there in the parking lot to avoid the 160.00 shipping fee. Is it relatively quick?
Sorry did not get back to you sooner was on vacation using the tent🤙🏻 install took about 3 hours you have to put the rack together on the tent which is nuts and bolts thing. It is quite heavy it will take at least 2 reasonably strong people to put up its award I also laid a bunch of blankets draped over the side of the car just in case so it did not scratch the vehicle. The box is huge I would just pick it up at REI if you have a trailer or truck! If you try it in the parking lot make sure it’s a good day and you have space and plenty of tools.

I don’t know about that it may be pushing it. You don’t want to damage the roof of your vehicle. If you have a stock rack like my Subaru Outback you will be fine I have had it on my roof for over 3 years no issues.
what kind of camp site do you typically go for this?
Joey Jiang I typically like to go to Undesignated camping spots just because I don’t want to be right next to other people you want to find places that are relatively level as well it makes it easier to set up as well. Just got back recently from a lake location in Eastern the region it was amazing 🤙🏻
nice review, what's with the low like and comment count on a video with so many views? kind of strange. anyway just wanted to suggest ditching the ladder clip, i'd cut the straps off entirely. with the bag over it and the straps hugging the sides of it it's not going anywhere, especially if it's the most annoying part of opening get it out of your life haha.
Can someone please help me for a sec, the tent is mounted on his regular roof rack no? I ordered a tepui tent YESTERDAY and I am panicking about it not fitting on my 2011 Subaru factory roof rack - it has the cross bars that fold away when you’re not using it. It looks like he just mounted his on his Subaru roof rack too?? I am wondering if I need an additional Thule rack

Madison Hudson Thule is back ordered in Canada until November so I haven’t gotten my tent yet... but I definitely plan on using the regular roof rack. I was worried because my subaru stock rack says it’s capacity is 150 lbs.. which obviously 2 people + roof tent exceeds. But then all of the racks on the Thule website also say their weight capacity is 150 lbs so I figured there’s no difference.
Hey sorry just came across this post since I am considering purchasing a RTT for a cross country trip. Any recommendations on how your experience is with factory bars?
Do you think you could cram 2 adults and a 6 and 8 year old in it? Wanting this for my little family.
Shawn I don’t think it would hold that many people very comfortably. 2 average sized adults and a pre-teen maybe depending on how cozy you want to be. Me and my wife and our medium dog fits fine.
