  • Applying the brakes on a mountain bike is pretty straight forward. However, HOW you apply the brakes and what you do with your body during that process is where the effectiveness lies. In this video, Mason, Jess and I are going to break down how to go from "light switch" braking to "dimmer switch" braking. Follow along.
Do you want to work on this in an ideal setting and get our instant feedback? Well, you can find our Clinic schedule or book some private sessions here:

This different format, while portrayed kinda goofy, is pretty good for developing critical thinking on the bike. Doing something, getting poor results, figuring out what you're doing incorrectly and adjusting. That can be a good skill on its own to learn. These videos directed at the basics can be great for even intermediate riders, when your riding gets lazy or needing to really look at the nuance in each skill. Sometimes a small adjustment in fundamentals can push you a lot further than you'd think.

Thanks for this feedback Kyle. It's EXACTLY what I was after with this format! Inspiring people to be critical thinkers on the bike is a challenge. We strive to instill this thought process at The Ride Series AND in these videos. Reconciling technique in your mind before applying on the trail is a critical component of growth in my opinion.

Just want you to know Rich, that I won't watch a video of yours that I don't like, therefore, I always hit the 👍button *_first_* - then watch the video. 😉

You had me at hello. I am all about breaking...collarbone, wrists, etc etc.

Great vid- love the silliness and fun! It would be great to have a future followup vid on showing some drills that people can do on their own to help improve their braking. For example- I’ve found that finding any kind of slope (bonus if it’s a steeper grassy one at a park etc), and practicing going down the slope as slowly/controlled as possible (without skidding) has helped me get better at correctly modulating braking.
    Keep up the fun content!

Add braking demos in conjunction with riding the bowls. Or do a separate video on bowls, thank you.

Is their a video on '"ready" or "attack" position as some call it? I feel like this never gets discussed when talking about the basics.

Maybe you can add how to brake on wet condition
