Sutro Baths, The Cliff House, Fleishhacker Pool, Musee Mecanique and Playland at the Beach were iconic to San Francisco's Ocean Beach. I loved exploring that area. Born in SF in the late 50's.
When I was about two years old in 1954, I took swimming lessons there. The woman instructor picked me up and tossed me into the "warm" pool. I came up, screaming bloody murder from the salt water in my eyes. I still remember that and that I "guilt tripped" my mother as I grew older since she felt so bad for letting that woman do that to me. The only other memory I have of that place was all the stairs. There was no other place like it.
HORRIBLE THAT SHE DID THAT TO YOU . . . MY DAD AND BROTHER DID SOMETHING SIMILAR TO ME IN LAKE MICHIGAN WHEN I WAS 5-6 YEARS OLD-I AM 62 YEARS OLD NOW.
I was raised at Ocean Beach. Kelly's Cove was my parents hangout. I spent my childhood walking around the Sutro bath ruins many times as a child 2nd generation born and raised in SF. There's a cave right there too I've played at as a child.

I used to ice skate on the olympic size rink which had been part of the baths. I went down miles of stairs thru museums of collections to get there. The whole place was Victorian magic.
Living nearby, the Suttro baths at Land's End are a unique hiking, walking, and discovery place. All near many of the other abandoned SanFran Bay military base defenses that are also able to be walking around and discover.
I used to go hear at night regularly. As a goth in the 90's, we'd often go here when the clubs closed for the night. It's an incredible place late at night (but be CAREFUL if you go!)
I visited this place a few weeks ago and it was really beautiful, there's this cave where one can walk through and another one that feeds the pools in high tide, the place is really beautiful indeed.
There's so much emphasis on it being near the ocean, and almost seemingly like they're pointing to that's what did the place in, but the reality is a series of events ended it with it not making enough money to stay open. And yes, ultimately fire burnt the place down but it was being demolished when the fire (arson probably) finished the job.
I thought it was the shutdown because of the AIDS epidemic. Got sidetracked in the comments; don't know if they mentioned that or not. LoL. Gonna close the comments & rewatch.
One of those series of events was (John Harris v. Adolph Sutro) when I visited the baths I marveled at what once was and what could have been and had to learn as much about that place as I could consume. The no Japanese signs throughout baths is also part of the series of events.
Love the cafe at the top of the hill. A family spot since I was a child. Check it out if you can, hope they’re still there. Also this is in the Princess Diaries lol.
I would have liked to have heard about what kind of habitat the pool has become? sure seems to have a lot of stuff growing around it? Is there not anything living in it? Would be kind of cool if that pool has turned out to be some sort of habitat that otherwise would not have existed there
This isn’t ’near SF’ it’s literally in SF. Outer Richmond neighborhood end of Geary. Must have been cool when the baths, and Playland were still around
It was totally cool. Sutro baths was huge and in the late 50's was turned into a big ice skating rink. And Playland was a great amusement park a lot like Santa Cruz, but a bit more seedier. It had lots of cool flat rides and even a double ferris wheel called the sky wheel. Lots of great food places too including the Hot House for the best enchiladas and tamales in the city at the time in the mid 50's. Was so sad to see Playland demolished in 1972 for the crappy condos that went up in its place. The historic Charles Looff carousel that operated at Playland from 1912-1972 now currently operated at Yerba Buena Park near the Moscone convention center on 4th and Howard street!!!! 👍🌉
Hey, I’d love it if you would do a San Francisco history video about the cable car house. It’s difficult to find a lot of information about that place, but I feel like there must be some really good stories there. It’s not far from the Sutro baths.
I loved having dinner at The Cliff House restaurant with my wife, while watching a beautiful sunset over the waves rolling in... All while I was sipping on a quality Old Fashioned. 🥃🌅🌊
"nearby San Francisco"? Friend, this IS San Francisco. In your opening sequence, you show the historic Cliff House Restaurant overlooking the same coastal area of Sutro Baths. Across from the Cliff House is the location of the Sutro Mansion which is named after Adolph Sutro, Mayor of San Francisco in the 1800's. Sometimes it's helpful if you know just a little about the subject you're describing on the Internet.
I thought the same thing. The dramatic music and narration!😂. The baths had gone out of business when I was little but we could still view them. The museum was still there and the shrunken heads and the "mermaid" mummy were a bit scary to me. I need to go to Fisherman's Wharf to see them again but it's just too touristy.
couldn't help but laugh when he said it was "maintained" by the national parks service while showing a busted heap of concrete covered in grafiti.... probably should either clean it up or rebuild it i'd say.
Sutro Heights and Sutro baths were both Tartarian/Fusang structures. Sutro was the "founder", because he simply found it. This is all part of the fake narrative of US history. We didn't build these cities. We found them and repopulated them.
Lol This program was so over dramatic. It's the remains of the Sutro Baths, yes, but I lived in San Francisco for 17 years and hiked around the ruins, and was just, "meh" about them. Yes and no…. It was mostly sand dunes back then. Downtown was a ways away the rest was unincorporated.
Best neighborhood imo. I love having Land’s End as my backyard.

The Sutro baths were not "near San Francisco" -- they were IN San Francisco. That land has been in the city limits since 1866
they mean san francisco city, not the county
@SheikDjibuti-t4b San Francisco is literally the only city where the county is the city. It's the same thing. How sure of yourself were you on this?

Yes, most of the museum artifacts survived because they had already been removed before the fire occurred.
Watch the 50s movie "The Lineup", a pivotal scene is in the Sutro Ice Rink and arcade...
plus it's a good movie
Ruins are the scene where Ruth Gordon's character appears to fall down a hole in the movie "Harold and Maude".
