I just bought the set of 76 in France. So pleased with myself as it was many months of researching and wanting, then I visited France and bought them outright! So happy!
***** Hey thanks for the questions. I would recommend that you use Faber-Castell or Stablio which are both great for any drawing application. Caran d'Ache are some of the best pencils made in the world. They're pricey for a reason, because they're great. That said, you don't need great pencils to create great art and you should buy the best you can afford. Pastels are cool to depending on the desired effect. Pastels can also be used in combination with colored pencils for some great effects. Good luck!
I could only afford the 38 pieces. It was so expensive! But it was totally worth it! The color pay off was beyond what I expected & I love that it blends really well. Love the texture, it reminds me of Oil I don't know why! Great color Pencils! A must buy, especially if youre a proffesional Artist! :)
Sevipants19 Hi There and thanks for the question. I hardly rate any pencil a 10, but I have rated a few like the Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle which is a watercolor pencil. For best all around colored pencil I give a very high rating to Faber-Castell's Polychromo's pencils which are oil based and are spectacular. Good luck and thanks for checking out the video.
+ColoringKaria Pause the video around 4:43 and you can read the colors, but also you can find the sets online if you're interested in the entire line and all the colors they come in. Hope that helps. :-)
Hey Owen, I was wondering what is the difference between the Caracn D'Ache Luminance and the Pablo? I currently own a few of the luminance and was wondering that is the difference between them and the Pablo.
+Zul Harun Thanks for the question. The Luminance is a wax based pencil, the Pablo is oil based and comparable to the Faber-Castell Polychromos. The Luminance will be softer and the Pablo's a bit harder. They'll both be more expensive than other colored pencils. Luminance come in 76 different colors and Pablo's have 120. Hope that helps. Good luck - Marty
I just got the full sets of these pencils, Holbein, polypros, and Lyras. I've came into a little money a once in a life time thing so I treated myself.
Hi Marty, I have been watching your reviews for over a year now. And they are all been very helpful. I know you have tried most of the pencil brands out there. I just want to ask you how polychromos and caran dache pablo compare with each other. I live in India. Here Caran dache luminance is not available but pablo is. I have a set of polychromos and i was thinking of upgrading. But all i can buy is pablo. So is it worth spending for pablo to upgrade? Thank you, Fadil.
I would stick with the Poly's for now. The Pablo's are comparable to the Poly's. The Luminance are a step up from both, but they are very expensive as well. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. ~Marty
I typically use Polychromos, and would like to add the Pablo and/or Luminance to my drawing bag. As far as blendability, will the oil and wax pencils "blend" ? Thank you for your videos!
+Scott Strong Hi Scott - I also use the FC Poly's in my daily work. The brands seem to vary in terms of blendability. I have better luck blending like brands fro instance Pablo's and Luminance. I've had some minor issues blending Pablo's with FC Poly's or other brands. Mostly it's just a blooming or washed out effect. If you use alcohol though, it tends to work a little better. Hope that helps! - Marty
+Lara Hartley Hi Lara - I have not met the perfect pencil yet, but these Luminance and the Faber-Castell Polychromos are as close to it as I've found. :-) Thanks for the great question. - Marty
Margarita Babovnikova Good question. In my opinion the layer, blend and are as vibrant as the Luminance in many colors. The Luminance may have slightly better lightfastness, but for the cost I use the FC Poly's everyday and save the Luminance for special occasions. :-) Of course every Artist has his or her own preference. - Marty
Hi Marty........Not quite sure what the rules are about this but perhaps you might guide me. I bought a set of 40 Luminance and 11 extra pencils as my Christmas present this year. I've used some of them a little as a picture will show but now I am moving to Central America and can't take them with me. Shipping is too expensive and I'm only allowed 4 extra bags. Any suggestions as to how I can see that they get a good home. I'd let all 51 go for about the same as the 40pc. I can't advertise them on Amazon due to the extra pieces. And there are no options where I live. Thanks so much for your continued guidance.
+Judith A Rowland Hi Judith - If you're willing to share your info, I could add that to my next video if you like. Just send me all the info and I'll make it happen. But you'll have to conduct the transaction and mailing yourself. In the meantime it sounds like you're heading for a great adventure! - Marty
You might not need all of Luminance, but several artist do say the white Luminance pencil is the best (rich, blends greatly, great coverage ability), and they replaced their white Polychromos with Luminance.
any colors aside from black or white that would be nice to have? unique color? just got a full set of polychromos and wondering if there are any specific colors you lie using in the luminance. thanks!
After watching this great review I ordered the full set of the Luminance pencils for 190,00 euros. I think it's a fair price when I compare it with the prices of Amazon and Dick Blick. I will get them next week and I'm so excited :3 I love my polychromos but I can't wait to use the Luminance
Hi Veronika - They are both great. The Faber-Castell polychromos are more affordable and there very nice. The Luminance are outstanding, but very expensive. So it depends on your budget. If you can afford it, buy the Luminance, if you can't you're still getting a great pencil if you buy the Poly's. Good luck! ~Marty
I don't think I've ever had a Luminance pencil snap on me, and I'm dyspraxic and drop my pencils all the time. I wouldn't fret too much about keeping them super secure inside a case. I keep mine in a set of pastel drawers personally :)
+Owings Art no but it's my neighbouring country the whole collection costs 191€ at my local store the 76 colors set the dickblick price is 285.49dollars still overpriced when you compare them with polychromos wherei bought the 120 set for 140 euros here
Tales Of Color Thank you! I guess this is affordable if you're in the proximity. They cost a lot more if you're buying them from here. I think the Polychromo's are a slightly better value. :-)
This goes for every art supply in general (i dont know if youre familiar with crayola crayons but i can almost afford artist qualitiy ones for the money they cost here... With shipping costs and everything.. From a kiddy tool they suddenly turn into overpriced art supplies) Except for a cheap mini pack that is available here And i cant get my hands on many artist brands id like to try Like holbein watercolors No online store is carrying them here And id have to import them But enough I dont wanna spam your comment section And i hope that i can afford the big luminance set for christmas
Owings Art will yoi be reviewing Holbeins? Im trying to choose between these and the Holbeins. And Im about to eat ramen for a month so I can do it. lol. your reviews are great. ive spent days watching reviews and most are blah. thank you for doing it!
Marty, if I heard correctly, you had 26 pencils? Did you get the 20 set and some open stock? I just wonder how I should go about picking from the open stock - should I think about colors I use most often or shades of primary for blendable versatility? :)
+Snowy Drops I don't honestly remember, it's been a long time. If I were doing this today I'd see what colors to get after I got the sets. With 76 colors in the line, there's lots of choices in open stock. I think you'd have to decide what kind of works best for you in terms of colors. Maybe start with looking at what you want to accomplish. Hope that helps! - Marty
Thanks so much, Marty! I was going to jump on some of the open stock, but then I do have a large set of Pablos coming. Taking your advice, I will just see what I need afterwards and hope for another sale. :)
They're pretty awesome Kate. I think you'll really like them. I hear you on the Pay Day thing. I save up as well. Hope you're having a great weekend. ~Marty
Thanks so much for helping me with my Luminanace. I'm new to all this. So, how would you suggest we do this? Do I send you my email address with the info? or can you tell me how to post a picture to you. I am a techno bimbo...............I'm asking $120 for the slightly used 40 pc set, plus the 11 additional pencils. Add $15 so that they can be shipped priority. All the pencils have been sharpened and the majority of the set has never been used. 3 about 20% and 3 just a fraction. I think a picture would be good. I just don't know how to do that off my camera. I don't own a printer. Someone will enjoy these. 51 Luminanace for $120, not bad. I have to cut back 90% of my art supplies before I leave. Thanks again.........Judith
+Rhonda Magee Hi Rhonda - For sure they're not cheap. I just save my pennies until I have enough to be the best I can afford. There's no pressure except the kind we create for ourselves. :-)

The 100 set i just saved for is really a nice set of pencils. The colors are so unique. I like off colors and they and the Pablos didnt disappoint.
