Thanks for this video! This is totally my approach when it comes to gaming PC. XPS 8700 is my current desktop (2020) and I bought it in 2013 during university years (budget!) >Upgraded GPU to GTX 660 >Upgraded PSU to RM650 >Upgraded to SSD 850 EVO 250GB >Upgraded GPU to GTX 1060 6G >Upgraded wireless card to AC1300 My next project is totally to change the case+cpu+ram
Same here, this pc been good. Upgraded gpu to 1050ti for 2 years now and 500gb ssd and just recently ordered rtx 2070 super and need to do a case swap with the gpu upgrade along with psu to support the new gpu.
@@SCWaiiihi, did you have to upgrade the 460watt psu to installl the 1050ti? Also, how much ram did you have at that time. I have 32gb of Ram but the PSU shuts down as soon as Inout the 1050ti. This 1050ti is a Dell version.
2020 update here: I upgraded the R9 270 to the new GTX 1650 Super for $165. It was a perfect plug-and-play card with 6-pin connector. My benchmark performance saw an increase of 31% increase in graphics performance., 4% increase to desktop performance, and 6% increase to workstation performance. Literally the only upgrade I made was to the graphics card. So I highly recommend this particular card for the XPS 8700 with the latest BIOS. You won't see a better improvement for your money.
I have the 8900 xps i7 6700k. I debating to myself for either the 3gb or 6gb but I heard theres not alot of difference. And I think that putting a 1070 and above will be a waste of money for a prebuild
Upgraded my 8700 to a musetex case. Changed the hdd to ssd. Upgraded my 720 GT to RX 570. Stock PSU to bronze 750 watt. Im still using the stock MOBO and i7 4790k. Im currently using a 8 Gb Ram planning to upgrade it to 16 Gb. So far I run CS GO/Valorant/League on a 140-200 fps.
Thanks for the video. I recently needed Windows 10 for remote work and didn't want to mix macOS or Linux personal data with Windows work. Picked up a stripped (case, MB, power supply) Dell XPS 8700 off ebay for $90. Added i7-4970, 32gb RAM, 1tb mSATA SSD (C:\), 4x 1tb HDD RAID0 (C:\Users) and a 2gb Nvidia GTX 960 (came w/ 2x 4 to 6-pin adapter). Clean install of Windows 10 Pro went well (drivers available from Dell through Win10) until I configured the RAID0. Moving C:\Users to the RAID0: 1. Trashes user data and 2. No MS OneDrive. Fix 1: Created NTFS mount pount by using an Install user account during install, moved C:\Users to RAID, activated Administrator, deleted Install user, and created Admin/User account for work. Fixed 2: OneDrive cannot use the hard link to the RAID for local data, so just used my Apple iCloud for remote data drops. Otherwise, this box is so much a monster I will be dumping my i5 backup MBP when remote work is done. I'll make my i7 MBP backup/portable and the XPS will be primary w/ a Dell 2405FPW display and Wacom Cintiq 21UX.
I know this is old, but wanted to thank you anyway. I just transplanted my xps 700 MB and CPU into a new case. Your pinout made it easy. I expected some issues with the PSU swap and the power button(saw videos saying you need to jump some pins), but I had no issues at all. Also I thought the IO shield was fixed in the Dell case, but mine popped right out in into my new case. Was a very easy swap to case with 750W PSU and dropped in an RTX 3070 I scored a month ago.
Glad I found this video, I'm looking to do the exact same thing to a Dell XPS 8900 (pretty much exactly the same, except it has an i7 6700). Going with a different case (fractal design focus G), and an rtx 2070 super. Glad to get a heads up on some of the issues I will be dealing with. Looks like the biggest issue will be with i/o pinout, and making sure the bios are updated.
I put a EVGA RTX 2060 XC into my XPS 8700 about a year ago and was able to run most games at ultra settings. Now looking to put in an SSD and maybe transfer to a new case. Perhaps a motherboard and cpu upgrade later.
@@sylux_5727 Yeah definitely. Can run pretty much any game at max settings with high fps. Putting in the SSD was also a success, now games running from the SSD load significantly faster (some load screens like Escape from Tarkov over 5x faster). As well as pc start up and general desktop actions are also much faster.
This is a great video and provides solid information to people new to PC building but I had a few thoughts if we are strictly trying to upgrade on a budget. I have the exact same PC in my home theater: > You did not test the system on any games prior to the upgrades, this system can run all but the newest AAA titles albeit with the settings dialed back depending on the game. Without a single change I'm running Switch emulation at 60fps. People new to the scene would do well to spend some time seeing if it runs the games they want to play first before going straight to upgrades. > You upgraded the CPU cooler but the stock cooler for me rarely lets the CPU rise above 70 degree's and is quieter then the graphics card fan. I know you got it to 90 degree's in synthetic tests but that's not realistic to the average user. This would suggest the upgrade here wasn't warranted. > You upgraded the PSU but admit the stock PSU is very good (most reviews agree). Over powered PSU's are a bit of a trap, I would say this upgrade was also not warranted. > This probably comes back to my first point, but in a pinch the R9 270 is no slouch. Set all the tuning sliders in AMD's software to max, set the fan to 85% and use the Vulcan API in games if it's available for the best performance. If you do want to play a game that requires more horsepower then the upgrade to the GTX 970 is a solid upgrade, but looping back to my first point I'd suggest trying this card on the games you want to play first. To be clear I think if you WANT to do the above upgrades that's great, but people new to the scene should understand there may be little to no real world benefit for their use-case. Also just an FYI storage wise you also have the option to populate one of the M.2 drives with a M.2 SSD, it's not any better or worse then a SSD SATA drive but saves a little cabling Anyway these are just my opinions and YMMV, I think the rest of your advice is fantastic. Thanks for the great video
@@M_harchI installed the 1050ti but I believe the psu is not strong enough. I have 4 sticks of RAM and a 2TB ssd in the machine. What sort of components did you have in your machine and did you still maintain the stock 460 watt Power Supply Unit when you put in your 1050ti?
My PC is a Dell Inspiron 660s I got as a gift from a friend, it had a Pentium g2020, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM 1333 mhz and an AMD 6450 1gb GDDR3 and stock Dell 220W PSU, it was a friend's previous gaming rig, and I ordered an i5 3470 for $40 and replaced gpu with an AMD HD 7750 1 GB GDDR5 for $55. I plan on changing the case and PSU later down the line once I find a job to pay for my school and have some money to upgrade my rig as I go.
great video! I have a Enthoo Pro M case coming in this week and going to do my first attempt at upgrading my stock Dell XPS 8500. Looking forward to all the challenges lol
@Kirito Diors Hax It worked! Took some trial and error to find where to plug in the front USB connections and power button nut once I figured that out it went pretty smooth. I did have to disconnect the wifi from mobo in the dell case and not transfer it over to the Pro M but as I have ethernet connected wasn't too concerned. Since then I've upgraded to a new corsair PSU and added a 500GB SSD and second 2TB HDD. Getting ready to do CPU,MOBO and ram all in one shot in the coming weeks and then it will finally be a whole new rig!
Ive got a question. I need to connect the front panel of my new case to the mainboard of the 8700. Where do i put the plugs of the power sw, reset, hdd light, Led? And in which order?
Hmmmm...very interesting. I have the 8700. I was going to upgrade the gtx 970 card I have in there now to the new 1660 ti card but I may as well upgrade the case and the fans as well after watching this. I really don't want to upgrade the mobo and ram just yet as it still proves to be a pretty solid machine. I have already upgraded the PSU to a 550w as well as the HDD to a 1TB SSD earlier last year. Thanks for the video!
Nick M. I would love to hear how the the 1660 ti did in the machine as I am personally thinking of making this upgrade myself, I’m debating between the 1660 ti and a 2060, but not sure if that latter will work
Franco Caliò 4 ore fa I have XPS 8940 and I want ask because when I plug the plug in the power the PC turns on for about 4 seconds and then turns off. While after I can turn it on regularly. So it is normal that it turns on by itself before being started: Thank you.
The I/o pinout diagram isn't working for me, on an XPS 8900 swap. Installing into a fractal design focus g case, and getting an error message when booting up about the power button. Kind of beside myself right now, and feeling deflated. Any suggestions before I revert everything back to the old case?
Just buy a new mid-range gaming PC whenever you found a good deal or on thanks giving deals, then sell your old PC for 1/2 or 1/3 of what you paid. Repeat this process every 3 years, you will always have modern hardware at optimal cost. Spending $600 for upgrades are not optimal. I would think hard if the cost of an upgrade exceed half the price of a modern machine. It's not like your hardware have no value left. Pre-built at normal prices may have some premium over DIY Built, but when there is a deal they are usually cheaper than your DIY equivalent parts.
I wanted to thank you for inspiring me to upgrade the old optiplex that was wasting away in my basement. It was a good machine but without changing the case I knew adding a graphics card would make the already bad thermals of my case even worse. I added an AIO liquid cooler, SSD, graphics card, more RAM and a better power supply to a new case and carried over only my motherboard, CPU, and included two 2gb sticks of DDR3. It required some pretty tedious modifications to work but in the end I spent less 400$ on a mix of used and new hardware to turn an old machine into a fully functional gaming PC. It even has RGB. Too bad I still get an annoying CPU and case fan error on boot as I used a Molex fan adapter to power my four 120mm fans and my AIO. Also it took 3 tries to find a network card that would work with the "ancient" q77 chipset and even then it only works in the pci-e 1x slot.
Thank you for the insight!! Not really a gamer but have the XPS 8700 and wanted to upgrade without the Dell $3200 new computer with absolutely nothing in it... Sad Will try to make mine more sound/ video editing or recording machine!!
Are you still monitoring this video? I attempted a case swap with the XPS 8700 today and have hit a wall I can’t figure out. There are some specifics you don’t cover here I would like to ask about.
i have a xps 8300 do you think i can use a ASUS B85M-G mini atx motherboard and a water cooler in it cuz im thinking about getting a i7 4790k cpu soon and the current mother board burnt out
Hello, I have this machine. I have upgraded mine with a GTX 1060 6GB and an i7-4790k. Handles new releases in 1080p on even ultimate graphics no issue. I am considering switching the case to a standard ATX case from cooler master, I found one which does have a 5.25 drive bay because I do still use discs. Just a couple questions. 1. Aside from figuring out how to wire the front panel header (power button, leds, etc) were there any other issues? 2. Did you have any issue removing the I/O panel and then installing it in the new case? Thanks.
If you’re referring The Inwin 303 then yes. However, you may have to relocate some of the motherboard standoffs though because they are likely pre-positioned for a full size ATX board and not a micro ATX board like the one from your XPS 8700
I have an older XPS8700 that Im gonna turn into a "sleeper" build. 750W gold PSU, 9900k processor, 3070, and 16 gigs of Ram.... the airflow is the most concerning for me as well bc the case is tiny but I got the dual tone white/black and I like the look of it.
@E I did get a pretty good deal on it actually. However, that PSU just died so now I have to replace it. Got a brand new case as well so if looks like I'll be rebuilding it today.
@@janmusil9192 that PSU lasted me about 3 years before it died. I rebuilt my PC in a Corsair 275R case. Worked flawlessly. Yes, replace the OEM PSU. Its not worth attempting to use the old one.
This is my pc still. I'm ready to upgrade. I got a 2060 "squeezed" in there with same power supply and increase ram. That's about it and its been working for almost 8 years now. I just want to know what's cheapest to upgrade or replace to start. I wanted to just get a new mother board and case with eventual power supply. Though not sure the problems that come with it.
I'm still slowly saving up for a GPU and powersuppy upgrade. I just learned my gforceGTG35m can handle most games, but most current can't run well with the shadows and stuff on. It does run SFIV really well, but I'm still saving up for better parts and might reuse it.
I wonder if you can advise me at all please? I am trying to re-case a Dell Optiplex 990 SFF into a Xigmatek Scorpio Mid Tower - but the only connection I have been able to fit from the case/front panel is the USB one. 1. There is a large 17x2 pin port on the motherboard but the connector from the case is only half that. 2. There is no 6 pin audio port on the motherboard for the "HD Audio" (headphone/microphone aux) connections that lead to the front of the case. 3. The Dell motherboard has a PWR_SW port (2 rows of pins, 3 on top and 2 underneath) but I am unsure where the dual Power SW, dual Reset SW and dual HDD LED goes, along with the single Power LED and one other single connection (8 pins required to fit all? 4. However there is one very small 2 pin socket on the motherboard, I am unsure what it originally did but it did connect to the Dell front panel somewhere.
depending on your processor Id just buy a new motherboard and power supply if you wanted to transfer it without headaches. hope fully your system's chipset is a lga1151 and supports ddr4 for future proofing
Thanks for the awesome video! I have a quick question, did you end up losing any usb 3.0 ports? If so, maybe you can give me some advice (please). It seems that there are 2 usb 3.0 on the front. I use my xps 8700 for VR game development so I need at least 3 usb 3.0 ports for VR headset and trackers.
I don't got your question, but I'm assuming you are asking about front USB 3.0, am I correct? If yes, the front USB 3.0 on the motherboard are inside just a regular/standard internal USB 3.0 connector, so you just need to plug the USB 3.0 cable from your new case there.
Could I add an AIO cooler to my Dell motherboard? Would plugging the pump into the cpu fan header work and the radiator fans into a molex/fan converter work?
And did you use static pressure or airflow fans at the bottom of the case for the gpu? I'm thinking static since there doesn't seem to be a lot of room down there on the inwin 301.
You most definitely can. I have done so myself. You can use an adapter to connect it to the motherboards propriety 5 pin or go the route I did and use a Molex or sata fan adapter. Doing so bring up annoying errors on start up though. Something like "CPU / Case fan Error, press F1 to continue anyway"
I have a Corsair H60. I plugged the water block on the SYS_FAN connector and I swaped the fan for an Akasa Apache, I plugged this one on the CPU_FAN connector. Working very fine and I didn't had any issues or annoying messages at startup, since the computer "thinks" the water block is a fan.
I'm looking for suggestions for solving the wifi/Bluetooth adapter issue? I'm planning on installing an rtx 2070 super in mine, and from the looks of it, the only pci-e slot for a wireless card would be getting blocked, since the rtx takes up 2 & 1/2 slots. Any other suggestions for running the antenna outside a PC case, without having to drill holes in it? While have my PC hard wired, I mostly want to get the adapter working for Bluetooth, so I can use an Xbox controller.
Good afternoon guys, here in Brazil is 17 pm. I have a dell xps 8700. I want to upgrade the font and video card, but I already realized I need a new case. Detail I look for a case that has the drive input for DVD, because oddly enough I still use for some games !!! How can you help me? I will watch some videos to see what is the best Cabinet option, or Case as it is called. Thanks graciously Anderson Melero
I bought this almost 10 years ago, I upgraded my hard drive, had 4770 replaced with a spare, I upgraded it 3 times w graphics card where the 2 largest ones was overclock 1660, a 2060 which I couldn't fit and as for cooler, I just put it next to my window since I live in alaska. I rather not put any more fans, actually took a one fan off and .... I placed a separate device I'm using. So far the only thing I want to use is my disc drive but doesn't feel viable so was thinking of getting rid of it, I mean I have it disconnected, but haven't taken it out. Other than that, I play red dead 2 at 720 max graphics, 1080 w high graphics w 3 screens just fine without the only fan I have not wigging out on me. I was just looking to see if there's any viable replacement for motherboard but now I see I'd have to just look for something refurbished. Ok video, but not I was looking for.
How did you get around the bios compatibility issues when you upgraded the cpu and the gpu? I have th xts 8000 and thinking of upgrading the cpu to the ryzen 5 2600 and the gpu to the gtx 1650 super. Is this possible or do I need a new motherboard?
@@eoinbyrne9068 funny enough I didn't. I just used 2 hard drives, one solid stated with windows 10 and hdd with 8. Somehow I downloaded Geoforce app and downloaded drives, switched out cards and only issue was power, but because mine somehow still has spare energy from powersource. ONLY issue I had was the awkward angle, as in once in, the graphics card tilts down a bit. Motherboard's only issue is the physical aspect, its scary but it fits, the power chord attachments don't need a converter but incase, best get the 6 (or 8 I guess) prong for either or. I'm not certain for the Ryzen to gtx, but it ALL does fit (2 fan) .... BARELY though, so be sure to take out the cd drive if need room and not fasten the sdd and you can fit all the excess wires into the slot. THAT'S ONLY ONE OPTION. My biggest advice to give, don't be afraid and GROUND YOURSELF. (ONLY ONE TIME I SHOCKED and maybe.... burnt a 1050, but it works still considering I don't use the fans)
@@eoinbyrne9068 oh as for my memory sticks, I messed up but I stole a couple 16gbs from an old office pc (no one noticed) and works fine as long as you gap them properly.
@@stoagymahalo5268 lmao, I was thinking of just upgrading the motherboard completely and getting all new ddr4 ram, I don't really know much about computers and if something were to go wrong id be afraid I wouldn't be able to fix it, it is ok to just take out the old motherboard and add a new one? Seeing as it is compatible with ever other component.
@@eoinbyrne9068 Only issue I seen with that is heating and space. I been having the biggest trouble of making room. I live in alaska so I just open the window and have the pc next to it and its fine. Though my 2060 just got smashed when i was cleaning, so got a new one. Hopefully this works out otherwise I'm just going to see about buying motherboard and power supply, I seen most these processors are compatible but its based on what was bought, what bugs me is my current processor is 300 bucks still. I'm hoping to find a newer gen one with less. But here's hoping.
I did the exact same case move after watching your video. I cant figure out how to get the front led to work where do I connect it to? Also how did u get the rgb fan lights to work?
I think the pinout I included in the description shows how to get the front to light up. As far as the lighting goes, I think we just connected it to the PSU but now I can’t remember!
I've got this exact machine except mine has 16gb ram, here's the thing. I've just ordered a msi gtx 1660 super aero. I did all the homework, but, I forgot about the power draw. Now as you know the XPS 8700 has 2x6pin power cables. So can I just use 1x6 - 8pin adaptor into the gtx? Or will it have to be a 2x6-8pin adaptor? This is causing me serious headache now, I was super happy and looking forward to Gears5 on high settings but now I'm sad. I'm not a noob but have I made a serious noob error with ordering this graphics card? Anyone please help put my mind at ease
Hey, Kevo. What ended up happening with your graphics card? Did you get the MSI GTX 1660 Super Aero to work? I have this same PC with 16GB RAM and I'm looking to upgrade the graphics card as well. Thanks!
@@myskullisred hi Jake, the card works flawlessly pal. All I had to do was buy a 2x6 pin to 8pin adaptor. Make sure your motherboard is updated though, do this through the Dell website.
Good video! I have a very similar Dell XPS and had trouble finding a BIOS update. With the old BIOS I couldn’t get a Samsung SSD to run properly. Any tips about Dell BIOS?
Hey guys, i have a question. I just upgraded with all the parts you use, but when i go to turn it on it doesnt work? I used the same pinout for the front io but the power button does nothing
@Hawk OG yea aftertrying alotz even the original power button, that didnt even work i discovered it was the psu, so after some research some ppl aaid swa-sonic or evga so i bought a evga psu and it worked lol, only issue rn tho is the clips for the cpu fan. He usses long one sin the vid but i cant find those anywhere so i just used zipties lol
I want to do this upgrade but I have a dell xps 8300. Can someone explain to me how the conversion to multiple fans. If you plug them into a molex don't they run at full speed all the time? Can you plug them into an adapter and then plug (3) fans into the single sys_fan header? I heard most motherboards can support 1 amp on the fan header but I couldn't find anything on this motherboard. Thanks, Chase
This is a good, interesting video but... At some point there is a cut off where you should probably think of getting at least a new motherboard to get past all the hassles of the Dell proprietary garbage. Or you could just get a better gpu that doesn't need auxilliary power and get an ssd and forget about all the other things that you don't need, like the case, fans etc...
Simple answer, he didn't. Those corsair AF120 are just red leds. The on CPU cooler I'm not sure which "pro" it is but my guess is ML120Pro red which also is red led only. Front of the case is red default. I know some in-win's have rgb functions but I can't remember a thing about it other than bizzare connector.
I want to give it a shot first. I feel that way with all of the different components that I need to buy, but I want to attempt it first and see how it goes.
Can you provide a link (amazon) for the fan adapter or connectors. Does this adapter plug into power supply or the motherboard. I see the motherboard has an existing 3 pin for the back fan, and then a 4 pin of sorts for the cpu fan. Sorry for my lack of knowledge.
Here’s my affiliate link to the molex to fan adapter I think I used: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004CLDSRU/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=f0f69d-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B004CLDSRU&linkId=5503b7786e516cda2210ba953ba95a61
Thanks! Another question. The Corsair pwm link is a 4 pin fan. Where do I plug this in. The molax adapter is only 3 pin fan connections. I see the only 4 pin is the existing cpu fan.

Great guiding video!! But Will it be able to upgrade the graphic card with the existing motherboard that comes for factory, to a MSI GeForce GTX 1050 TI Gaming X 4G???
It would probably turn on just fine but as soon as you put it under load the first issue you’d run into is the PSU. They recommend at least 600-650w and the XPS in this example only has a 500w. Thermals would be your next problem. Lots of throttling in this case I imagine.
You would need a power supply with two 8pin vga connectors to even power the card. Thermals would be a huge issue as well. As far as bottlenecks go, your CPU would probably be a bit of a bottleneck and you wouldn't see much difference between a 1070, 1080, or 1080 ti as your limitation would be the CPU

Hello, I am a PC Gamer who has been playing on pc for 6 years now but I have never build a PC instead of building a pc, I bought a pc from best buy, ASUS's G11CD. for like $1200 dollars last summer. I know I could have got more what I paid for if I built a pc but my parents didn't have fate on me that I could build a pc even though it was my money and I was paying through payments. Anyway, it's a year now and I have managed to save around 200 dollars. And I was wondering if I could upgrade my pc (I am not sure if I can upgrade my pc since it's a pre-built) and if so what should I upgrade with only a 200 dollar budget. I feel like my pc has too many lag spikes when playing games like black desert online or GTA 5 and it takes a while for my pc to refresh when I boot it up. Also If I can upgrade my pc what guides should I watch since this is going to be my first time and is it difficult to upgrade a PC's hardware. Here are my specs according to a program called Speccy: Operating System is Windows 10 Home 64-bit, CPU is an Intel Core i5 6400 @ 2.70GHz which is clocks at 28 °C, 8.00GB Single-Channel Unknown @ 1063MHz (15-15-15-36) RAM, Motherboard is an ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. G11CD (LGA1151) which clocks at 119 °C, Graphics Card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (ASUStek Computer Inc) which clocks at 34 °C, and for Storage, I use 931GB TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 (SATA) which clocks at 37 °C.
Astro Kills for 200$ you can't do much more for performance over what you already have. An i7 or a better graphics card would both be good future upgrades, although either of those would cost you a bit more than 200$. For 3 or 400 you could get a better gpu and for around 300 you could upgrade to an i7. Although you might be able to find a used i7 that is compatible with your generation for around 200 if you are lucky
That would be a 6700 or 6700k, although since your mobo doesn't seem to support overclocking the 6700 would make more sense unless you find a better deal on the 6700k
For me I would upgrade the case(Midtower) and the mother board(atx) and power supply(atleast 650 watts) and by the way the temps aren't the clock, Its the rated Mhz
@@colewelden The i7 6700 is over 300 bucks and used maybe 200 way over his budget, If i wanted a better proccesor i would pick the ryzen 1500x and a cheap b350 mobo for future proofing
This isn’t the one I used but if you need to connect several fans then I’d recommend using an adapter with multiple 3 pin connectors: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004CLDSRU/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=f0f69d-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B004CLDSRU&linkId=32d504ee306539ed05e45d7bc3b1e69e
I had a molex power adapter so I connected the extra fan directly to the power supply. And we didn’t do anything with the reset switch. Unless you do some fancy electrical work I’m no sure there’s anything you can do with it. As far as I’m aware that mobo doesn’t have a pinout location for a reset switch.
TechFox The reset switch goes in at a 90 degree angle next to the power switch. Trying to fit both into the tightly spaced dell pinout is difficult but possible if you sand down the connectors so the aren't pressing so tightly against one another.
I just bought an rtx 2070 super for it myself. Everything I've read, says it should work, but you need to upgrade the case, as the stock Dell case won't fit it. Also make sure you update the bios before I stalling.
@@mikeO31082 but this rtx 2060 xc black is a single fan card, is significantly shorter than 2070 super wich is huge, I will also buy the evga supernova 750 g1+ Power supply, I`ll see if that fix it.
@@jack84699 I didn't realize how short it is. It's only 7.5 in long.. I believe the front rail is ~ 9-10in from the back of the case, so I don't think it should be an issue
Thank you for this, I got a Dual GT1060-3GB-OC for $130, it almost didn't fit. Next is the case thanks for doing the foot work for us. Also i was trying to find ram and came across a compatibility issue for the Kingston DDR3 1600/12800 4GB and 8GB but it said it wouldn't be compatible with the i7 4770. Has this ever been a problem with this? I've never had a problem matching up ram but this is kicking my ass.
Ive watched and read about this case not having very good airflow? is that true ? I have an xps 8700 with a 1060 6gb dual fan. I am probably going to do exactly what you have here. currently my pc runs pretty warm. If i dont get the warmth under control it may burn up my gpu. So to say. thanks in advance
The case is awful for airflow. The case swap is a pretty simple procedure but make sure you check out the pin out map in the video description so you know how to connect your mobo to your new case. Good luck!
what would you suggest for an xps 8700 new custom case ??? i need airflow baaaadddd i saw a guy used a nzxt s340 but didn't give much info on how his stuff ran in it
Honestly anything would be better. If you're strapped for cash I would at least add a fan to the front of the case. I couldn't find any mounting holes but a couple zip ties work just fine.
Stephen Wiggins you probably found a case by now but I upgraded to a Corsair air 540 it’s a f*cking massive case but so far it’s the best airflow I’ve ever seen on any other case
I’m not sure, I know it only fits a microATX board though. This isn’t the adapter I used but if you need to connect several fans then I’d recommend using an adapter with multiple 3 pin connectors: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004CLDSRU/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=f0f69d-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B004CLDSRU&linkId=32d504ee306539ed05e45d7bc3b1e69e
Your making this video is greatly appreciated! I have been on the verge of making my first gaming PC for some time now and an xps 8700 has fallen into my lap. Would it be viable/possible to upgrade this computer for 4k gaming? If I were to get a GTX 1080 Ti, would the motherboard be able to support it?
If I was going to upgrade an oem pc. 1st thing is I would make sure I had 16 Gigabytes of ram. Second would be an ssd as at least a boot drive. Third would be a low power draw graphics card. I probably wouldn't upgrade anything else. You can't overclock an oem pc so there is that. Many don't have bios updates microcode for better processors. I also would not upgrade the psu hence the low power draw gpu. After that I would just think about doing a full blown new rig. I would not waste money on a retail case.
christopher james with RAM prices being what they are I would recommend adding two 4gb sticks and settling for 12gb of ram including the two 2gb sticks included so as to not pay twice as much for only 4gb of extra RAM.
Also it is definitely possible to overclock an OEM. Some even come with overclocking capable motherboards, those that don't you would simply have to use the base overclock method or software based overclocking, although that can lead to stability issues because you are also adding voltage to your RAM at the same time. You would need to make sure your RAM wasn't a shoddy, low MHz kit before attempting either of those methods. Otherwise you could end up frying your memory.
Hey! It’s me from the stream tonight. I also wanted to add that I actually had the same computer as you started with. And you’ve influenced me to actually buy the parts, and now I have a similar build as you made in the video. Also one question. What graphics card would you recommend for this specific PC that’s around $150-$27(
Hey Matt! We put in a GTX 970 which would fit in that price range but might be hard to find now. You could try at 1050 ti or find a deal on a 1060 6g. If you can get your hands on a RX580 8g that would be good but compatibility may be an issue. And about the headphones you won, message me on the TechFox Facebook page with the address you want it sent to. Thanks!
TechFox I’d actually prefer you gave the headphones so someone else. It wasn’t my intention to necessarily win them, as I just wanted to know some info. The PC Build you recommended in this video worked. And I am grateful for that. But, I wouldn’t use the headphones to the use someone else may have for them. Sorry for this inconvenience, i just feel that someone else would be better off with them. Thank you for the tips! And keep making amazing videos
Quick Thought while I’m thinking of it. Will a Asus GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Cerberus be compatible with the build. From my research it should be. Just needing a second opinion.
MattNMatt I wouldn’t know for sure. We got lucky with the 970. They had just released a BIOS update a few weeks before the build that made it compatible. I’d look up the BIOS versions for the motherboard and see if it says in the notes about GPU compatibility
Replaced my cooler and the fans... smh cpu was hitting 76c it was pretty hot but as soon as I replaced the cooler and thermal paste it dropped to 61-63c power supply wasn’t a problem it had more than enough power to handle my system I’m keeping my case since it’s not that bad and it has a small window to look at the pc ( ordered rgb strips for $17 ) I thought u could use the gtx1060 in sli but wellp it’s not possible I returned the 1060 I bought from Best Buy YEA YEA IK BEST BUY LAUGH AT ME 🤦♂️ so now I bought a 1080 for $500 it’s still overpriced but I’ll take it bought my pc in 2015 don’t know what core i5 it had but it hits 4.1 MHz so I’d say it’s still pretty good I’m pretty happy with my setup I’m just eating for some more fans i orders to come in as well as the rgb strips.
@@Tech-Fox ya see I'm wanting to get a relatively decent gaming pc for as cheap as possible and I was considering buying a used dell pc and getting a gpu and power supply for it. My original plan was to get a used dell for around 120 and put an rx570 in with a new psu but I just found out that the dell that I picked wouldn't be big enough for the gpu, so now I'm trying to find a desktop that will support the gpu without having to modify the case, I also considered a case swap but was recently told dell motherboards were different and probably wouldn't fit in a different case. So I'm a bit stuck atm.
Rebuilt my 8700. Corsair 275r Case, GTX 1060 6GB, 960GB SSD, 650w PSU. Very happy with the turn out.

Thanks for this video! This is totally my approach when it comes to gaming PC.
XPS 8700 is my current desktop (2020) and I bought it in 2013 during university years (budget!)
>Upgraded GPU to GTX 660
>Upgraded PSU to RM650
>Upgraded to SSD 850 EVO 250GB
>Upgraded GPU to GTX 1060 6G
>Upgraded wireless card to AC1300
My next project is totally to change the case+cpu+ram
Might as well just buy a new pc lol
Same here, this pc been good.
Upgraded gpu to 1050ti for 2 years now and 500gb ssd and just recently ordered rtx 2070 super and need to do a case swap with the gpu upgrade along with psu to support the new gpu.
What processor?
This is my PC. Upgraded to a GTX 1060 3gb. Smooth for me.
I have the 8900 xps i7 6700k. I debating to myself for either the 3gb or 6gb but I heard theres not alot of difference. And I think that putting a 1070 and above will be a waste of money for a prebuild

I'll make my i7 MBP backup/portable and the XPS will be primary w/ a Dell 2405FPW display and Wacom Cintiq 21UX.
hi any recommendations on which ram i should buy I still have the stock 16gb that the computer came with and I think its time to get 32
I know this is old, but wanted to thank you anyway.
Nice camera shots!

Why not upgrade the ddr3 ram to 16 instead of 8
Glad I found this video, I'm looking to do the exact same thing to a Dell XPS 8900 (pretty much exactly the same, except it has an i7 6700).
Can u game on it?
@@sylux_5727 Yeah definitely. Can run pretty much any game at max settings with high fps. Putting in the SSD was also a success, now games running from the SSD load significantly faster (some load screens like Escape from Tarkov over 5x faster). As well as pc start up and general desktop actions are also much faster.
@@mixfitmusic thanks
This is a great video and provides solid information to people new to PC building but I had a few thoughts if we are strictly trying to upgrade on a budget. I have the exact same PC in my home theater:
> You did not test the system on any games prior to the upgrades, this system can run all but the newest AAA titles albeit with the settings dialed back depending on the game.
Also just an FYI storage wise you also have the option to populate one of the M.2 drives with a M.2 SSD, it's not any better or worse then a SSD SATA drive but saves a little cabling
Anyway these are just my opinions and YMMV, I think the rest of your advice is fantastic. Thanks for the great video

great video!

I have XPS 8940 and I want ask because when I plug the plug in the power the PC turns on for about 4 seconds and then turns off.
How much ram can u shove into it cos I bought one so I could upgrade it.
Thank you for the insight!! Not really a gamer but have the XPS 8700 and wanted to upgrade without the Dell $3200 new computer with absolutely nothing in it... Sad Will try to make mine more sound/ video editing or recording machine!!

i have a xps 8300 do you think i can use a ASUS B85M-G mini atx motherboard and a water cooler in it cuz im thinking about getting a i7 4790k cpu soon and the current mother board burnt out
Hello,
I have this machine.
Thanks.
Mine came with a 4790, and used to have a 960 but I recently upgraded to 1060, it's pretty good machine.
I have the Dell 8700, can I use the mid size tower version of the tower you used in the video?
If you’re referring The Inwin 303 then yes. However, you may have to relocate some of the motherboard standoffs though because they are likely pre-positioned for a full size ATX board and not a micro ATX board like the one from your XPS 8700
I have an older XPS8700 that Im gonna turn into a "sleeper" build. 750W gold PSU, 9900k processor, 3070, and 16 gigs of Ram.... the airflow is the most concerning for me as well bc the case is tiny but I got the dual tone white/black and I like the look of it.
Did you have problems with proprietary connectors? Maybe in the front panel?
Im probably gonna rebuilt my 8700 soon. Upgraded the PSU to a 750w Bronze PSU and the GTX 645 with a GTX 1060 6GB
@E I did get a pretty good deal on it actually. However, that PSU just died so now I have to replace it. Got a brand new case as well so if looks like I'll be rebuilding it today.
DSOThorn You upgraded PSU and the new PSU died? I am scared that the old PSU is gonna die and damage my new hw so I am going to replace it too :D
@@janmusil9192 that PSU lasted me about 3 years before it died. I rebuilt my PC in a Corsair 275R case. Worked flawlessly. Yes, replace the OEM PSU. Its not worth attempting to use the old one.
I know this video is a few years old, did you have to do anything special getting the front panel USBs to work? Or was that simply plug and play?
This is my pc still. I'm ready to upgrade. I got a 2060 "squeezed" in there with same power supply and increase ram. That's about it and its been working for almost 8 years now. I just want to know what's cheapest to upgrade or replace to start. I wanted to just get a new mother board and case with eventual power supply. Though not sure the problems that come with it.

4. However there is one very small 2 pin socket on the motherboard, I am unsure what it originally did but it did connect to the Dell front panel somewhere.
depending on your processor Id just buy a new motherboard and power supply if you wanted to transfer it without headaches. hope fully your system's chipset is a lga1151 and supports ddr4 for future proofing
whats the best way to upgrade dell studio xps 8100
Nope

TechFox just found out my case is missing the wire thanks for the reply. I had to cmos reset after case transfer.I learn alot from your videos... 👍
Would the case and fans be compatible with the XPS 8900?
has anyone had trouble with their pinout post the most recent Intel BIOS update?
Make sure your motherboard is updated though, do this through the Dell website.
can I put b450 for ryzen cpu on it
Good video! I have a very similar Dell XPS and had trouble finding a BIOS update. With the old BIOS I couldn’t get a Samsung SSD to run properly. Any tips about Dell BIOS?
What is the highest gaming ssd that you can get that is compatible with the XP’s 8700 motherboard? Or to put it in the pc in general?
Hey guys, i have a question. I just upgraded with all the parts you use, but when i go to turn it on it doesnt work? I used the same pinout for the front io but the power button does nothing
@Hawk OG yea aftertrying alotz even the original power button, that didnt even work i discovered it was the psu, so after some research some ppl aaid swa-sonic or evga so i bought a evga psu and it worked lol, only issue rn tho is the clips for the cpu fan. He usses long one sin the vid but i cant find those anywhere so i just used zipties lol
So I got a 8700, what if I bought a new motherboard and case but kept the processor, along with salvaging basically everything else?

Should have watched this before I broke my computer.....
Thanks,
Chase
Processor suport list? Whatsss plissssssssss pentium ? Celeron Core i ? Plys list processor
Very good video. Explained well and it all made sense
Very good point, excellent!
How did you get the rgb lighting to work mine doesn't have rgb headers:/
Simple answer, he didn't. Those corsair AF120 are just red leds. The on CPU cooler I'm not sure which "pro" it is but my guess is ML120Pro red which also is red led only. Front of the case is red default. I know some in-win's have rgb functions but I can't remember a thing about it other than bizzare connector.
Well at this point, I might just buy a new pc 😂
Seriously. I'm feeling the same.
I want to give it a shot first. I feel that way with all of the different components that I need to buy, but I want to attempt it first and see how it goes.
@@soccerdude601 nice explanation
My motherboard (same model as the video) only has 1 chassis fan socket (SYS_FAN1), is it possible to add additional fans (from case etc.)?
Did you ever find the answer to this? I have looked everywhere. I think plugging them into a molex will cause them to run at 100% all the time.
@@13chase2 You can use a fan splitter/controller
Can you provide a link (amazon) for the fan adapter or connectors. Does this adapter plug into power supply or the motherboard. I see the motherboard has an existing 3 pin for the back fan, and then a 4 pin of sorts for the cpu fan. Sorry for my lack of knowledge.
Here’s my affiliate link to the molex to fan adapter I think I used:

im not sure if it will work, but i was able to upgrade my factory one to a gigabyte gtx 1060 6gb and it works great. hope this helps.
You’ll have to check the Bios update notes. The GTX 970 we used didn’t work until the BIOS was updated.
What would happen if I just shoved at 1080 ti in and didn’t do anything else

Great video! I am doing the same things. Can you link to the Molex adapter used for the fans or just list it here. Thanks!
hey man - did you get a response for this? I am also looking for that Molex component.
This isn’t the one I used but if you need to connect several fans then I’d recommend using an adapter with multiple 3 pin connectors:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004CLDSRU/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=f0f69d-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B004CLDSRU&linkId=32d504ee306539ed05e45d7bc3b1e69e
What did you do with the reset 2 pin connector?
Also how did you connect the extra fan did you find a 4 pin conversion cable to the 3 pin connector
Did you have trouble removing the motherboard IO shield? I have heard that shield is actually attached to the case and is not removable.
We were able to remove it just fine if I remember correctly .ive heard the same thing so maybe some models it is and other it isnt
Ohhh no! I already buyed a RTX 2060 xc black for this pc, bad purchase?

Also i was trying to find ram and came across a compatibility issue for the Kingston DDR3 1600/12800 4GB and 8GB but it said it wouldn't be compatible with the i7 4770. Has this ever been a problem with this? I've never had a problem matching up ram but this is kicking my ass.
maybe because a speed difference rams tends not to work with different speeds try getting ram sticks that have the same rated mhz

Thank you so much for this! did you get get the In Win 301 mid or mini? also, do you have the link to the Molex component?

Your making this video is greatly appreciated! I have been on the verge of making my first gaming PC for some time now and an xps 8700 has fallen into my lap. Would it be viable/possible to upgrade this computer for 4k gaming? If I were to get a GTX 1080 Ti, would the motherboard be able to support it?
People are better off building from scratch than swapping components from prebuilt.
Great vid bro!
Could this build run current gen games well?
Yeah this would be suitable for 60fps 1080p gaming at high to max settings depending on the optimization of the title.
Good Video !! hey all this is compatible with my xps 8500?
I would say most likely but couldn’t tell you for certain.
@@colewelden or by unbuffered ram slowly increase its mhz until failure then take it back a couple of notches. I add by 100mhz

I’d look up the BIOS versions for the motherboard and see if it says in the notes about GPU compatibility
thanks for the info
thank you!
