In this video, a one-hour film by Gregory D’Agostino, the life and career of legendary American organist, choirmaster and church musician Gerre Hancock is reviewed and chronicled, with commentary by several of his students and peers. Special emphasis is given to his long, remarkable tenure as organist and master of the choir of men and boys at Saint Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan. This film was produced during a time when Mr. Hancock was making a transition from the conclusion of his work at Saint Thomas Church in New York to a new position as teacher at the University of Texas at Austin. Spoken word in interviews, interspersed with musical segments of services and rehearsals at Saint Thomas Church, including Mr. Hancock’s spectacular organ improvisations, provide unique insight into the life, work and genius of this celebrated Ameircan organist and church musician.
