      Those sedans and station wagons didn't get light truck fuel economy exemptions. In the US bigger vehicles can be disproportionately less fuel efficient but that wasn't enough to keep the biggest sedans and wagons around, light trucks have way more lax regulations, one example is the gas guzzler tax which only applies to cars, not SUVs and trucks, but it goes so much deeper than that.

    To really illustrate how ridiculous that payload is, a Honda Ridgeline has 1500 to 1580 lbs of payload. This issue also is an issue in midsized trucks in general, not just luxury full sized. A Tacoma is rated for 6800 lbs of towing but the TRD models have only 1100lbs of payload. If you have a 8x20 aluminum trailer with 4 Polaris sportsman's on it (about 4200lbs, I've pulled this load enough to have weighed it at the local scales) so about 420lbs of tongue weight. Now, the payload ratings for all trucks assume a 150lb driver (lol, not since high school) so take another 50lbs off in my case. So 1100-50-420=630. 4 ATVs so taking my 3 buddies, also about 200lbs each, so we have 30lbs left for any gear! The honda would still have 400lbs to spare. Ridiculous!

  • @schwabalicious
    @schwabalicious ปีที่แล้ว +11

    If you want to use your truck to do truck stuff, you have to option it that way. I had a ‘21 Ram 1500 with 1830 lbs of payload and currently have a ‘22 Ram 3500 with just shy of 4K lbs of payload - pretty good for their respective classes. However, they were both Big Horns - in other words, well-enough optioned, but I knew going in I’d never get the payload ratings I needed if I loaded my trucks up with multiple subwoofers, four-corner air suspension, panoramic sunroofs, power rear seats, and so forth. IMHO a previous poster was right - these new über-luxe trucks are replacing a bunch of family sedans and SUVs of old and are spec’d for the occasional trip to Home Depot.

    Great Video guys! I also am not a fan of low profile tires on a truck... it just makes no sense, you lose ride comfort and fuel economy by going with larger wheels. Just get larger tires and smaller wheels lol

  • @mattwood2773
    @mattwood2773 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great explanations, fellas. My example is a '21 Ram 1500 Bighorn crew cab with the eTorque Hemi and 3.92 rear end. 1701# payload, 11,300 max towing. That being said, I'd bet my truck maxes out the rear coils somewhere between 6-800 lbs tongue weight even if we're otherwise within the payload cap. I've not tried it, but I've seen others do it and coils just don't carry the weight as well as leaf springs. We currently tow a small boat/trailer combo of around 3K, and probably less than 10% tongue weight (but I've never measured it). As for towing outside/above rated capacities, any of them, GVWR, GCWR, GAWR, payload, etc, I'd say most trucks are "capable" of achieving this but I'd bet insurance companies would be quick to check operating within or outside of these if you ever had a mishap while towing, even if was unavoidably not your fault. Some live with this level of exposure without worry, but for me that potential is outside what I'd be willing to accept due to the possible financial, or other implications. 100% agree that optioned out, top trim levels come at the expense of payload and ultimately, towing, and in Ram's case, 3.21's vs 3.92's equate to around 2.5K pounds of max towing capabilities, but I'm guessing they all have the same level of rear sag when hooked up to anything greater than 600 lbs tongue weight, even without other payload contributors. Still love it, though!

      Yeah Ford makes the best trucks that are still meant to do work, the new Ranger also still has leafs except for the Raptor. F-150 is also the best halfton, so much payload, with other brands you'd need a 2500 for that and they are much bigger and less efficient.

Its pretty well equipped for the time it was built, and has all the options you'd really ever need in a truck that gets used as a truck...the only thing different I would do would find one with a manual transmission, but pretty hard to find it seems where I live for a 3/4 ton V10 truck. Nope didn't want a diesel either, don't care for the higher fuel costs, maintenance and repair costs....sure if I were towing at full capacity all day every day a diesel would make sense, but for the few times a month it gets used, the V10 is perfectly fine.

  • @HiPlains1

    Down in the states the dealers have too much inventory. Some up to 150 days. Half ton sales have hit a wall with the higher bank rates. Economy is slowing and personal debt is at an all time high. Many owners underwater on their trades as new truck prices are beginning to tank. Not hard to find 10K off on these now. Even Ram has factory rebates. Soon they will offer 15K off as dealers get desperate to move inventory. Its only going to get worse. The bottom line is Banks are getting tight on their guild lines and payments are going up up up. The big three "think" they can keep prices up but when the Federal reserve keeps bumping interests rates its a losing battle. Because the Feds want prices to go down. That's their intention in all of this.

      @@youngblood23rb And your literally stuck with the vehicle because you will still take the hit if you trade. And being underwater will also hurt your credit score if you trade because you will have to finance two cars at that point. Or you can be like lot allot of owners and just give it back to the dealer. Which means they have to send it to auction and take the loss. And most repos are garbage. But people who made foolish decisions that pay too much will generally not take ownership for their mistake. It becomes everyone else's problem when they pay a higher bank rate to mitigate bank losses.

    I opted for no sun roof, a standard bed, and tailgate. It gives me a little over 1400 lbs payload then. I bought a dump trailer. Easier to load and unload. Won't scratch the paint on your truck and we all agree shoveling dirt around fenders is a pain. That's what I did and don't regret it because let's face it, the bed is barely big enough for a dog. If Ram made this an SUV, I probably would have bought that for dry storage. The 20s vs 22s also give you slightly more sidewall and ride. I even got 5% more sidewall rato to fit just fine so it doesn't look like a rubber band. Comfort and hauling can go together. As mentioned in the video, find a trailer that works with the truck, not against it.

    Most trucks drive around empty most of the time anyway and gas is still relatively cheap compared to most other countries.

    Well i guess you should have payed attention and spent the extra couple hundred dollars for the 392s. The 33 gallon tank is a good option to get also. Now i can tell you from my personal experience the air suspension when in tow/haul mode will pretty much get you leveled back out. I have had it maxed out with a 31ft formula with twin 525sc engines and right around 140 gallons of fuel in it. Had zero issues and truck never blinked an eye. Also have a 16ft 10k flatbed with a new holland l218 that has over the wheel steel/rubber tracks. Only issue is loading and unloading it has to be put in jack mode otherwise the air suspension codes out when the back end lifts up. 392 gears is the only way to buy these trucks. Even my 1st ram was a 2013 laramie with pretty much the identical setup. The price difference between laramie, longhorn, limited and limited elite after a point your paying for the name just like any other brand.

    When this all started, folks tried to kill two birds with one stone and have it all in a truck. It was more economical to have a pretty capable nicer truck trim to do a respectable amount of work, but still be comfortable going on road trips or having a nice night on the town. Now,, if you don't have a family and need a SUV, it is probably a more economical idea to get the lowest trim truck that meets your work and daily driver duties and buying a nice sedan for road trips, etc. since SUV's cost so much. As long as people keep paying stupid prices, they'll keep making them and taking our money.

    I've been around trucks my entire life and my father has been hauling his whole life - heavy equipment, recreational etc. The payload number in the door jamb is a very rough guide. I would argue a 1k payload can safely be 2k as long as the driver isn't brain dead. In fact, the air suspension in the Limited trim is designed to shut off at 2k.

    I totally agree! I bought a 2019 Ram Tradesman - it is 2WD, bare-bones and came with the sad little steelie wheels. It has the 5.7L V-8 and the trailer package - all a guy really needs! I bought a nice set of Ram rims/wheels from one of the clowns that bought an $80k truck and needed to spend more $$$ and put larger rims on it... My $30k truck looks better and performs better than the luxury models. Not to mention - I hate crap like lane departure assist and rear backup assist... If you cannot back up a truck/trailer maybe it is time for a Prius and a manicure.

      Exactly correct. I don't care for all those nannies either, my current truck has rear anti-lock brakes, that's all the safety nannies other than airbags that it has. The tow mirrors make it great for seeing what you need to see, and it don't have a backup camera either, although hooking up to a trailer by myself it would make it a bit easier, but not necessary. My truck is 4WD, extended cab with the 6-1/2 foot bed...does everything I need an HD truck for, and not full of electronic safety crap that I don't need/want.

In the event of an accident and your vehicle being over capacity, the insurance company can void your coverage as you failed to follow the manufacturer's guidelines. To validate this, please contact your insurance company and gather their perspective on this as I'm sure you will be more informed.

    Hmm… We bought a Rebel. Not because we really really wanted one, because we couldn’t get our hands on the Toyota we actually wanted. Ford’s 10-speed is a disaster. GM’s 10-speed is the same one - not only that but GM ditched the 5.3 V8 we’d come to like so much. Ford’s engines are new too. So looking at RAM, we chose the ZF8 speed transmission and the venerable 5.7 HEMI - both of which are well sorted. Then we chose everything carefully to help us better use the truck for what it was intended - Overlanding. Bigger fuel tank, RAM box storage, towing package, Rebel 12 package gave us all the camera angles we needed to navigate, adjustable air suspension for higher clearance, underbody protection, rear view mirror camera for obstruction in the back. Split tailgate for easier access. By the time it was all said and done, it was nearly $75k US. 😮😮😮 The payload is 1280, which ain’t great. What is really weird is that our economy improves by 1mpg when it is loaded to the max (but not towing).

    That is a very nice car, oops I mean a truck, I think. The payload capacity is not as much as my side by side. The price is no surprise after looking at the Ford and Chevrolet 1/2 tons in top trim. Maybe the banks will give you a 15-year loan for 3.99% so you can buy the damn thing. Thanks for the interesting video!

    I would speculate that the payload ratings have as much to do with stopping the truck as its ability to tow. Overloading past the rating could get you in trouble even if it pulls without issue.

    If you have an issue with high priced trucks stop reviewing them. Idiots will keep buying them but all your doing is giving them a free 15 minute commercial. Also no point taking $100,000 trucks off roading or towing because the actual owners never do anything like that besides showing up at work in a overpriced truck while they get out stepping on their powered steps so they don't get their pants dirty.

    72 and 84 month payment plans are becoming the norm and this is part of the problem for companies to justify higher and higher truck/car prices. As for payload, there is no excuse for a full size truck to be at or barely above 1000 lbs but I bet most consumers completely overlook that stat.

  • @davidhillbrand2302
    @davidhillbrand2302 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @macp349
      @macp349 ปีที่แล้ว

      ....physics, math...and economics (and greed and a bunch of other stuff). GVWR is based of the certain components, namely chassis, axles, suspension, engine, brakes, etc. And test results. Change that number (GVWR), those components have to be changed. That combination has to be tested and certified, which costs. Who's gonna pay for that? Not to mention, now inventory (space) for more levels/grades of components, programing to pick the proper components, etc. If it's a 70k difference for trim and accessory bits from base to Limited Elite, how much more do you think it would be for chassis, axles, etc bits to maintain payload/towing ratings?

    Used by posers who just want to say they have a truck, but should probably just be driving a nice car. And yes I have a truck that is a half ton crew cab (Tundra Crew Max Limited) but it used daily for work hauling parts that are made at my foundry. The 5’6” bed holds a pallet full of parts, and yes I probably go over the “rated” payload, but it doesn’t hurt it. I also put heavy duty E load rated tires on it because they’re over rated for my half ton, but because they will also last longer than your typical half ton truck tire. As a business owner, I have to be able to do it all and get to work, no excuses. I don’t not come to work because it just snowed 8” last night. I also have my own beater plow truck to plow my own lot. Anyway, yeah, I would say most new half ton truck buyers probably don’t need them other than, as many people say, to get mulch from Lowe’s and to butch up their look for the neighbors.

      If you never tow anything the lower ratio is fine, but if you want to tow, that 3.21 ratio will totally suck, even a 3.55 sucks for a towing ratio....3.73 at a minimum for towing is what I've found that works pretty well, and still gives decent fuel economy.

Lol these trucks don't get me wrong are super nice but miss the mark of a true traditional truck owner that values what a truck was ment to do. I know there are lower models to choose from but even those are pricey. The guy who actually uses a truck as a truck suffers the most because of the demand for these vehicles drives up the cost. And you can't tell people they can't buy a truck unless you can prove you need it. Its a free market where you can do what you want. It is what it is.

    Such a weird problem. I would think the manufacturers would add layers of suspension to the luxury trucks.

    • @jonathanjones2722
      @jonathanjones2722 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would think, but I think that would be more of a concern for federal regulations. All these trucks are classified under certain weight and size classes. So in order for manufacturers to have this particular model meet this weight class, they have to have this amount of weight as their limit. So this half ton size probably has to stay between 6,500 to 7,100 pounds for the vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). If they go any higher, then they start to go into a different weight class and size. That’s where you would start going into 3/4 ton and even 1 ton trucks. Which is obviously different from this 1/2 ton size truck. So it’s not really a matter if the manufacturer can add layers or beef up the truck to handle the weight, it’s just because of federal regulations and weight and size classifications.
