This is one of my favorite sort of standalone episodes of Charmed, right next to Sense and Sense Ability in S5. It doesn't play a huge role in the overarching narrative of the storyline, but it's thoroughly entertaining and well-written.
This episode really lets me know how much Prue's destiny was already laid out before her. Even without the BTS drama, Prue, naturally, would have died in Charmed. Probably sacrificing herself for her sisters. I definitely would be infected with either wrath or gluttony. 😅
I think it’s fascinating to see this episode and how it foreshadows the consistent issues that Phoebe and Piper go through for the rest of the series. Piper always becomes excessive throughout the series whether she’s the Fury, the Valkyrie, or the Hindu God. It’s the same thing for Phoebe regarding wanting to maximize pleasure and minimize pain (Cole, saving her perpetually dying lover, wanting a daughter). Both of their sins were reasons to align with Avatars, and why they chose to fake their deaths. Lastly, it shows that Prue’s presence in the power of three would stifle the other two due to her pride. I definitely think Paige would be greed based on her past life, her voracious consumption of learning the craft, and her abrupt heel turns from magic to wanting a normal life. Also, her dream man spell episode reinforces that idea, as well as the constant need to accrue the same deference and admiration Prue possessed in Piper’s & Phoebe’s minds.
See I feel Paige would be Envy, The Sorceress captured the prince because she envious of the love and wanted it herself. Paige was envious of Prue being super witch. At least that's my opinion lol
@@erivida64 I thought that too, but greed refers to an excessive desire for power, wealth and food. Envy, on the other hand, refers to the desire to be in another person's situation terms of wealth, power, success, etc. Paige’s did not solely want Prue’s position and deference in the family, she also wanted her own independence and freedom from it. She also wanted witch life, whitelighter occupation, and a normal life rolled up in one. Past Life Paige did not solely want that man, but wanted him to impregnate her and rule the kingdom as a powerful sorceress. Our Paige wanted it all, baby. And I believe she’s achieved it and was the most successful happy end out of the sisters, imo. She’s a true “yes and” girlie! ❤
Paige is definitely envy, she was jealous and felt inferior to Prue and her achievements. Paige was jealous of Glenn & his soon to be wife, she devouted herself to learning as much as she could in order to suppress her insecurities and feelings of lacking when it came to magic.
I think its safe to say you're the best charmed channel in youtube nowadays and youre a reason why we charmed fans keep the show alive and the legacy going. Its time for a breakdown for the entire series giving us at least two/three years of joy, and i want you to know that i LIVE for these spartacus references in charmed videos, the crossover i always wanted but impossible to happen Keep going, we got you 🤙 Ps i hope for some spartacus analysis or the finale at least
I'd actually love to see an "Anatomy of a BAD Charmed episode" series lol. Loved the "why season 2 didn't work" video as well. Amazing work, keep up the Charmed content, i'm a fan ♡
I like how they use these references and let them play the idea in the world of charmed. Also reminds me of the pandora’s box episode and the king arthur one or the disney princesses reference episode. As Charmed fans, we enjoy them seeing how these ideas would turn out in the Charmed world. I think they would always have that line where “Oh, that’s real?” and another sister would respond with “And you’re still surprised after doing this for how many years?” I just ❤ Charmed. Thanks for the anatomy of the episode. Please do the Pandora’s box too. That episode was so fun and inspiring to watch.
Phoebe is seen as the slutty sister because of a few reasons 1. Alyssa Milano is naturally a very sexy looking woman 2. Phoebe is often dressed in the more skimpy and revealing clothing 3. Cupid in season 2 mentioned she had many past "loves" which adds to her list on the show 4. Phoebe's early portrayal is that of a carefree person and carefree personalities are often subject to be considered slutty
I just remembered the list of potential grudges she made in Sight Unseen, and Piper sees how long it is and goes "you were BUSY in New York" It's surprising though in the first two seasons to see just how many guys Piper is with, and she's the only sister to juggle multiple guys at once
Shannen Doherty played Prideful Prue in this episode phenomenally. Prue not only took charge entirely this episode but also basically narrated the plot along to (us) audience scene by scene in a cool way. The dark scene where the cop attacked the sisters and Prue was the only one left standing(before Lucas kidnapped her) gave Season 1 vibes and was well-directed. I love how the episode gradually focused on the man versus self conflict rather than man versus man or in this case man versus Lucas. The exposition at the end in Prue and Piper’s conversation about what happened was amazing and almost scary with the fact that you can never truly get rid of Pride even with a selfless act. Honorable mention: Pheobe was hilarious in this episode.
"Oh Phoebe you know that charming the pants of someone is just a figure of speech don't you!?" Like you I love the stories you can tell with the 7 deadly sins. Even writing a play about vampires each infected by one back in high school. The thing about this episode is that it isn't just about the humor, but the character work is also great. each characters sins make perfect sense for where their characters are at this moment and I love that.
Did y’all see the gateway cow print box in the scene where the cop goes to the manor after being infected with anger? Pure nostalgia. PS I just found this channel and love it so much!
I would like to thank you for not bashing Prue in this episode 🤣 This was a favorite episode of mine that I happened to watched stoned recently. You mentioned a tonal shift when the wrath-sin infused cop shows up with a gun. YO. That got to me big time like wait, the campy fun and games are over, this human is ready for murder. But season 3’s leap in production especially in the first episode was so good. A breath of fresh air, stakes higher, and to see Piper fighting hand to hand is always a treat lmao
I didn't like this episode when I first watched it but I grew to appreciate it when fully understood Sins and Virtues and it always frustrated me how Phoebe defeated her sin when she didn't show any Chastity-like behavior but I'll accept your explanation because it's does make a little sense and I found that scene where she used her power on the officer's button to get a Premonition of him funny and also confusing because since their powers don't work well while they are infected.
I don't think they were supposed to exhibit the opposing virtue exactly, but just do something out of selflessness as they explained on the show itself. Also, Phoebe's premonitions did screw up technically! They certainly didn't warn her of the possible danger that was just about to come to their front door.
I just watched a "Charmed Quotes Tribute" video earlier this morning that edited together various quotes across the show to essentially create new and hilarious conversations between the characters, and I see now that a few of them came directly from this episode: Prue's "That is SO personal gain!" and "You lose, I win, HA!" along with Piper's "Get your sl*tty hands off of my husband!" 😆
I didn't realize how true to the basic concepts of the sins this episode got. Impressive that they put in this amount of effort to get things right. I'm currently rewatching season 3 (rewatching all of "Charmed" because of coming across your videos, btw), though I'm not at this episode yet (I think it's the next one up). I also got the feeling season 2 was weaker than 1 or 3 so far, which is not something I'd remembered but which I know you made a video about. Though I do think one thing that helps season 3 that I haven't heard you mention, and that you may or may not agree with, is that it feels more... integrated to me than season 2. For example I think Cole's story really helps it fit together. Obviously in the first episode Cole is introduced and many of the episodes after it have him finding different ways to come after the sisters. "Sleuthing with the Enemy" is basically a direct sequel episode to "Power Outage." Many of the episodes directly after that involve Phoebe coming to terms with letting Cole go. And then "The Good, The Bad, and the Cursed" shows Cole's entrance back into the fold, while "Death Takes a Halliwell" finally has Cole in the role of "the innocent." "Charmed" obviously was never a heavily serialized show like "Breaking Bad" was. And it doesn't need to be. But I think having some tissue that really ties the episodes together, even if in some episodes it's in the background, really works for it.
This is my favourite episode so was super exciting to hear you finally talk about it! The Seven Deadly Sins have also been a life defining theme for me too, so thank you for speaking so many of my thoughts about this story.
Literally using this as a fun springboard with my best friend to start a conversation on which sin ball we think we'd get. Another (unsurprisingly) awesome video!
I love this episode! It's one of my favorites. My absolute favorites are "Morality Bites" and "Ms Hellfire". I only watched the first 4 seasons though. Is lazy Leo absolutely adorable or what?! 😂 Like always I enjoyed your analysis. Can't get enough of your "Charmed" videos!
This is absolutely on of their best episodes. It's a great comedy episode with an interesting premise. My only criticism is that the sin of greed got shafted.
Phoebe changed so much under Brad Kern 's era. She used to be carefree, fun, cool, outspoken, man eater. She wasn't interested in mariage, even when she was with Cole. After season 5, she became whiny, obsessed with love and mariage, needy, She reduced to her annoying love stories . " I wanna find lovvvvvveee, who's the father of my chirldren? Not you, next!" I hate her changement!
I like this analysis and I think this is one of the best episodes of Charmed overall, too. Shannon was great at playing alternate versions of her completely straight ('Which Prue Is It Anyway?') and the way she refuses to accept she's been infected with pride is very revealing in itself. It's probably the best season of the show too, with the darker Cole storyline being freshest the first time around, and this episode is an enjoyable diversion.
I appreciate your expansion on those values. I thought maybe it would be also important to state that temperance always have to mean withholding completely. It can me finding balance and the joy that comes with it
The phrase "Pride is the only sin that can't be beat" basically shape my whole vision of the concept. I'm not into religion but like you I've always been fascinated by the concept of the sins and I got it from this episode of Charmed
Yeah it's definitely a lot to think about. Kinda reminiscent of how Mussolini while taking over Italy would leave the light on in his office after hours so people would assume he was working extra late to make the country better, or be photographed doing charity work
I’ve always loved season one and found it so relatable. Now I can PERSONALLY relate to “Wicca Envy” since the day I signed out for the day at work and a minute later was on the phone w the boss defending myself while he accused me of stealing. I’d used the clock on the wall ( I was always leaving my phone somewhere) to look at the time when I signed out. No one had set the clock back for daylight savings so it looked like I gave myself an extra hour I even had my own “Hannah and Rex” work bitches that were out to destroy me just like Prue and were checking my time sheet when I left so they could call and report me. If only I had Piper’s power to freeze
I probably would've gotten struck with Lust by Lucas. This is an EXCELLENT breakdown of one of my Season 3 favs! Everyone brought their "A" game, and I bet they had a good time doing it.
I looove this episode :D this is one of my fav of Season 3 and also one of my comfort episodes, it's just great ! If i was being infected by one of the 7 deadly sins, it would either be Sloth or Lust lmao
This was a great episode. Love the ending. Would you be interested in doing a Chris Halliwell video about the character, his story, what he brought to Charmed…?
Sidebar: i think the lighting especially in. The manor once the cop loses it is great and fits very well. Also shoes what happens to peopke when you play with their emotions
I love this episode as it explored their personalities and what and why the sins affected them, also these stories also go back to what we've learned about Grams and other women in their family. Grams was very prideful and reckless with her mouth and her trail of bad relationships with men (some were demon or super natural being), I wish that Shannon had stayed and the show kept the course it was on because I would have like to have seen an episode where Leo who is their whitelighter had no choice but to send them to a magical therapist and shown clips of past episodes and helped them grow as individuals and made them see some their flaws to work on but sadly as the show went on the writers and Brad kern were taking them in many different directions that changed them from who we were growing to know and love and even Paige who started strong was becoming a mess. I enjoy your take on things and breakdowns.
I would assume Wrath, since the Source was nearly able to get her to kill a human, and she's very quick to violent solutions by Season 5 Possibly Envy as well, since she compares herself to Prue a lot
Ngl that box looked cool lit up 😅 but i love this one because it shows that they and Leo despite veing powerful arent immune to things that are bad but humanly natural. Also Lucas getting their souls as a result actually was great writing which is probably why other demons and even Chris used human desires etc against them, albeit he had good intentions.
I've been rewatching Julie and the Phantoms and I was comparing them to the Sins. Low and behold the colors matched the characters in Julie and the Phantoms.
I think what's good about this episode is that it holds Prue accountable and calls her out on her Mary Sue qualities (like Woogy Phoebe called her out when she saved Piper from the gas man and how Wendigo Piper called her a know it all). If only we had characters being called out in later seasons. Sure, Phoebe gets held accountable when she loses her powers, but after that it's all coworkers praising her beauties and talents. I mean even Prue had a tough time at work with Claire and other people.
There’s also an episode in which Phoebe signs her name, possibly it was the divorce papers, but she misspells her name as Pheobe. I could never ignore it!
That was a fun episode. I may have been infected with either Wrath (my hypersensitivity is at play here), Envy (I am almost never fully satisfied and I keep wanting something to make my life greater) or Sloth (I like doing nothing and just chilling, although my mind keeps racing when I do).
Can you please do a video about how Brad Kern got control of Constance M. Burge’s creation? Because I have looked into this & I can’t find the answers, like: why wasn’t she showrunner of her creation from season 1? why did she leave entirely after season 4? & everything in between. Constance seems like such a mystery, too, I would love to know more about her in general. Thank you!
I never tasted the ice creams from Magnum and didn't know about them before but I checked what their flavours were and I think my favorite would be Greed.
Another hilariously cute moment is at the end, when they're at P3 and Phoebe says something about how she's all "sexed out" or something and would rather talk about pretty much anything else, so she uses the band playing as a way to switch topics. Phoebe asks what the band's name is, to which one of her sisters - I don't remember which (Piper?) - responds, of course, with... "Orgy.", and her sisters obviously can't help but to be amused. It makes it 10x better once you realize this is a real life musical group (as P3 always hosted iirc), and that, yes, their stage name irl is literally Orgy. ...Also, I must admit, I've always loved this episode as well, but its also gotten me thinking about which sin (& thus corresponding virtue!) I'd be prone to getting "infected" with...? It's honestly a toss-up between Lust and Envy for me, I think 😶🌫
Wow watching season three of the episode Sin Francisco I never knew this episode it was about sins in season three I have heard of the seven deadly sins but I never knew in charge and there was some religious elements and it got me thinking I remember the dark light was in the series in charge and now I’m starting to notice the white lighters they are considered angels but the dark lighters they remind me of the fallen Angel’s we all have seen that we are not aware that we are doing something that we are not aware when people commit sins they don’t realise those were not religious Would you do a video about dark lighters because something tells me They’re kind of like the fallen angels who were rejected by the elders just like God rejected Satan including other angels before Satan
This episode is not my favourite of season 3 (it’s sleuthing with the enemy that’s my favourite) I do like it and I think Alyssa is really funny in it with her portrayal of lust
"staple of Christan Teaching ... an accepted part of the faith" - sounds like you forget that Catholisism is only ONE branch of Christianity, the rest of us don't believe this. Just look at how Jesus attacks those selling things in the temple, for example - if anger/wrath is a sin, then we have a really sinful savior 😉 I like these videos, though! Before ouat came, Charmed was my favorite TV show 🥰
I would love for you to make a video about all the foreshadowing of Prue’s death in the first 3 seasons (her mother’s death, Andy’s death, P3H20, death takes a halliwell etc)
This is one of my favorite sort of standalone episodes of Charmed, right next to Sense and Sense Ability in S5. It doesn't play a huge role in the overarching narrative of the storyline, but it's thoroughly entertaining and well-written.
And sometimes that's all we need lol
Fun fact! Sense and Sense Ability was written by Brian Krause (Leo) 😊
It does play some role if you think about Prue's recklessness and belief that she's not needed any more by her sisters.
"I didn't get hit." Love how Prue says that 😂
Shannen's comic timing was...chef's kiss
Lol the pride talking 😅
@BetterWithBob Her character being so strict makes her comedic moments even more funnier.
This episode really lets me know how much Prue's destiny was already laid out before her. Even without the BTS drama, Prue, naturally, would have died in Charmed. Probably sacrificing herself for her sisters. I definitely would be infected with either wrath or gluttony. 😅
There was a sort of foreshadow in this episode when she says “No Demon has defeated me” to Lucas.
I don't believe she would of died at all if Shannon never leave, why would they kill her off they're the charmed one power of 3
@AmoMe2009 that was the pride talking, Prue wouldn't say that if she wasn't infected
I think it’s fascinating to see this episode and how it foreshadows the consistent issues that Phoebe and Piper go through for the rest of the series. Would you be interested in doing a Chris Halliwell video about the character, his story, what he brought to Charmed…?
That would be fun :)
I often wonder what Paige’s sin would of been?
I would assume Wrath, since the Source was nearly able to get her to kill a human, and she's very quick to violent solutions by Season 5
Possibly Envy as well, since she compares herself to Prue a lot
@@BetterWithBob yep you might be right 🤔
Ngl that box looked cool lit up 😅 but i love this one because it shows that they and Leo despite veing powerful arent immune to things that are bad but humanly natural. Also Lucas getting their souls as a result actually was great writing which is probably why other demons and even Chris used human desires etc against them, albeit he had good intentions.
Dont think i didnt miss the Pollyanna reference. I am impressed.
Chick Flick & Sin Francisco are like my Two Favorite Episodes! But Long Live the Queen is like my #1 favorite Episode
I've been rewatching Julie and the Phantoms and I was comparing them to the Sins. Low and behold the colors matched the characters in Julie and the Phantoms.
One of my favorites
Phoebe being hit with Lust surprised absolutely NO ONE. So her marrying A cupid and being the goddess of love wasbt surprising
God I remember those magnums. One of the highlights of my childhood
Also another fun fact. Probably unintentional but the 7 deadly sin page gets mentioned in season 1.
Oh very nice. I missed that
its funny cuz 3 is always my go to season
The girls always look flawless!
Fun fact: if you look closely at the Book of Shadows entry on the sins there's a slight typo where it says diempowered instead of disempowered.
I did not see that lol
There’s also an episode in which Phoebe signs her name, possibly it was the divorce papers, but she misspells her name as Pheobe. I could never ignore it!
That was a fun episode. I may have been infected with either Wrath (my hypersensitivity is at play here), Envy (I am almost never fully satisfied and I keep wanting something to make my life greater) or Sloth (I like doing nothing and just chilling, although my mind keeps racing when I do).
After the stream is done, will I be able to watch it from the beginning? I unfortunately arrived super late :( Thanks!
Too late now but even when it's premiering you're able to rewind it and start from the beginning :)
Thank you!
There's a video on Cole that explains it all actually
Lazy Leo is my hero😂
What video is the clip from when you discuss how Shannen was pushing Prue to be killed off?
one of the best charmed episodes reviews. More episode to come and match with trivia for each part of episode.
I never tasted the ice creams from Magnum and didn't know about them before but I checked what their flavours were and I think my favorite would be Greed.
I think I enjoyed that one too
Please look into reviewing one of the best episodes of season 3!!!
Pre-Witched
Charmed: Season 3, Episode 17
"Hello, sleeveless!"
@@BetterWithBob possibly one of the best lines in the series hahaha
Those Magnum seven deadly sins flavours were great, I've long want them to re-release them. I remember the cinnamon flavoured chocolate one the best.
"We all scream for ice cream" is an A-tier episode, right?
It has Caleb, the man with the best chat up game in San Francisco, so that's a hell to the yeah 😂
As a child of the 2000s when i hear 7 deadly sins i think about how tyra banks made a girl pose in a casket after her friend died 😢
What Sin do you think Paige would of gotten Bob?
can u do the empath prue episode lol
ah and that gloriously 2000s fight scene
thats the whle reason i want u to do it lol@@BetterWithBob
@@materialqueen670 that episode is so good
tel me abt it@@angelaholmes8888
Leo is my spirit animal as a Sloth!
Shannen Doherty really was fucking great in this episode
I worry that my sin would have been pride 😢
Same out of all of them mine would be pride
The image of Piper drinking champagne is priceless. She looks beautiful (and I say this without lust, as a gay man).
Bob would you ever do videos on the tv series supernatural 🤔
I would absolutely love to see this as well🤞🏾
Eldest of three. Can confirm.
I will forever Love lazy Leo or Sleo!
I love This épisode so much
Me too XD
Ah yes according to google, they're still active lol
Phoebe is a whole mood in this episode.
Not gonna lie if i had her powers id use them the same way 😂
I believe the technical term for that is...ahem...Power Perversion Potential 🙈
Damn Phoebe is so hot bro
She was only 'fine' in January. Someone's falling in love ;)
I related with every single of them hehehe
#relatable lol
back in the day it would of been wrath for me then pride, and now i wanna say sloth i guess.
I'm definitely sloth.... no doubt about it!
I would get slapped with Envy or Pride.
My husband would absolutely get wrath.
I remember this episode it was really good but it's not my favorite episode of season 3
Wow watching season three of the episode Sin Francisco I never knew this episode it was about sins in season three I have heard of the seven deadly sins but I never knew in charge and there was some religious elements and it got me thinking I remember the dark light was in the series in charge and now I’m starting to notice the white lighters they are considered angels but the dark lighters they remind me of the fallen Angel’s we all have seen that we are not aware that we are doing something that we are not aware when people commit sins they don’t realise those were not religious
Would you do a video about dark lighters because something tells me They’re kind of like the fallen angels who were rejected by the elders just like God rejected Satan including other angels before Satan
Hmm that could be interesting. The show never really did go that deep into darklighter lore I don't think so a lot is up to interpretation
Maybe one of these days you should do a video on an episode you hate but specifically try to find the good parts in it.
Centennial Charmed comes to mind but that'll be a challenge lol
@@BetterWithBob Heh maybe than an episode everyone else seems to enjoy but you don't? Or opposite that you enjoy it but no one else seems to.
❤❤❤
This episode is not my favourite of season 3 (it’s sleuthing with the enemy that’s my favourite) I do like it and I think Alyssa is really funny in it with her portrayal of lust
💗💗💖💖💖💖💖💖💗💗💖💖💖💖💖💖
YAYYYYY
The 7 deadly sins ARE in the bible.
It's in Romans!
You review Charmed better than the lady . Shes having it personally, Cz critiquing should be about the art and not the artists. 😊
"staple of Christan Teaching ... an accepted part of the faith" - sounds like you forget that Catholisism is only ONE branch of Christianity, the rest of us don't believe this. Just look at how Jesus attacks those selling things in the temple, for example - if anger/wrath is a sin, then we have a really sinful savior 😉
I like these videos, though! Before ouat came, Charmed was my favorite TV show 🥰
Le egg
Is that one of the things Piper buys?
I would love for you to make a video about all the foreshadowing of Prue’s death in the first 3 seasons (her mother’s death, Andy’s death, P3H20, death takes a halliwell etc)
