I didn’t think my immortals charge would route the rest of Russias lines! I didn’t have much confidence once I had Spain and Russia coming at me in the town but held till the very end 😅👊🏻
One of the main weaknesses of the grand army was that the guard corps(young/middle/old guard, etc) had taken the best of the best men out of the normal line infantry, cavalry, artillery. This left the other corps of the army not as well led. By the time 1812 came the guard corps had increased to nearly 100,000 including units from allied nations. this had overall impacted Napoleon's army as a whole.
I must disagree. All the soldiers were doing everything they could to join the guard corps, especially heroic actions. It unconsciously raised the overall level of the whole army, including the non guard corps. Of course, im not denying the dominance of the guard corps over the other ones. I think the fall of the Empire is due to other factors than the overall level of the army.
@@paullepineau7926 yes but there were limitations like if I remember right to join the old guard you had to be minimum of 6 ft. One of the contributions to the fall of Napoleon's France was over the years he had to rely on younger recruits.
And then let's say 50 Lieutenants that were really good at what they did were taken from other units in the army and then people replace them that did lesser of the job of the previous lieutenants that would overall affect a corps
I mean fair point, but overall i think it's irrelevant to the russian factor. Which is that if Napoleon had not gone into russia with an army of 600,000 men, who knows how long he could've dominated europe.
I wonder why more ppl don't watch your videos these fights be bussing, Like literally crazy and intense

The Coalition players were doomed to defeat since they lost the big cavalry showdown, and if you add to that the fact that they didn't seem to know about the square formation command, then the result was more than obvious (I'm surprised they didn't even try to use the town to their advantage against the cavalry); It was stressful to see how they were unable to form squares after receiving the first charges from the horsemen, especially leaving their flanks so vulnerable knowing from the middle of the fight that they had that disadvantage. If I had been one of them, from the moment I became aware of the English defeat and the defeat of the cavalry, I would have tried to withdraw in an orderly manner (even sacrificing some units to save time) to a more defensive position where I could reestablish new front of combat; At least that way it was easier to guess where the enemy cavalry attack. If there's one thing you learn early on in Total War games, it's that if you lose your cavalry, the only way to survive is to play defensively. =/
@@coloradoing9172ehh u can’t form squares while ur being run down by cav man, it’s legit. Forming square formations isn’t as easy as u make it or the game shows. The French general in charge of that center-left army, the one that fought for the town did an outstanding job of buying his allies the time they needed to really turn the tide. The defeat-in-detail of the British army was an impressive display and the fact that the commander of the French right took the time to rest and reform his men showed good patience. That French cavalry corps was handled exceedingly well, making some major gains and taking off the pressure from the center at key moments early on and throughout. I honestly think though, that if the Russian/Coalition commander from the right flank had maneuvered more quickly to emplace his troops on the Spanish left, that it could have very well have been a Coalition victory. It seemed to me, but it could have very well just have been the tunnel-vision, that his army just sort of sat back after his defeat of the French left.
I think this quote from the film waterloo sums up this epic battle. amazing game "I've been in this position before at the Battle of Marengo. I lost the battle at five o'clock, but I won it back again at seven!"

I always assume the French dominate teams are going to win - they usually do. As soon as I saw the all cav army, I knew the coalition was doomed. Both teams played well considering the challenges. The battle on shore was just as important as the big cav fight - it quickly became a 3.5v2.5....
Hey man. Huge fan. I just played NTW3 with 2 other friends, and have this epic 3v3, France vs Russia. Can I email the replay to you, and perhaps you can take a look and maybe do a video?
Even when I am not a fan of Napoleonic warfare or history I have to admit this game is really well fleshout it has improved over many aspect of the total war saga and the scale of battles is really marvellous
18:50 First time I see round shot being used as it's *supposed* to be used by a player in this game. Old artillery of the time wasn't supposed to lob indirect explosives at the enemy, although it *could*. The main purpose was for a solid round of iron to punch a whole through the ranks of infantry, and this had a very large demoralizing factor. I mean shit, wouldn't you run after a ball the size of your head just shredded through like six guys next to you like they were wet tissue paper?
@@robowisanveithasung6022 I didn't specify which kind of artillery. I also said the artillery of the time wasn't supposed to do that, though it could but that would require a fuse on the explosive, which was very risky at the time
Was the bit about French and Spanish being similar a little bit of irony or sincere? Because... well... they're kind of very different :P Great presentation of the battle though, I liked the music selection here.
Honestly, I get the impression the last remaining Russian army didn't do enough during the middle part of the battle. After the crushed that one french army, he should have either helped his coalition allies defeat the army in the city, or peel off to intercept the victorious french army at the beaches. Either way he sat around half the match and basically equated to an entire missing army. He could dedicate half his force to help his allies and keep the other half for cavalry protection, and it would have made a huge difference. He did well but got a bit too passive and defensive later on. Should have pressed on their advantage
"We have the British, the Spanish (with their discoball decorative hats *cut to Spanish soldiers with dubstep in background* *unce! unce! unce! unce!)..."
Idk about the version these guys are playing but ik that in normal Napoleonic total war that you would never want a full army of horses, in this game horses just get cut down by bullets they die hella fast

Cav charges were used really good in this battle, but i wish cav wouldnt be able to rout line infantry in a frontal charge. Like in reality, they would just need to hold their bayonets out with 2 or 3 ranks, and no horse would charge into that.
I thought the squares were formed to protect the flanks and rear. Charging the front of a line formation would be just like charging one side of the square, wouldn‘t it?
@@janhapunkt266 still they were more solid like pike squares... Frontally lines were charged down & broken all the time by heavy cavalry until single-piece metal cartridges came to drastically decrease repeat fire time. Ex: the great Cuirassier charge at Eylau
