Kitchen paper to clean bores. With thinners or brake clean. This engine either has a crank with different throws or rods that are different lengths. Both highly undesireable and THAT should be adressed. Or the engine will be junk. It is probably 50 years since I built a grey,, I had none of these issues. Just differing conrod sizing,, as most GM engines have had since the year dot. Both under and oversize. Red blu black 3.8253 308 are no better. Or SBC The reason the pistons have a 'spigot' in the centre is that they were turned on a lathe
Cheers for your information. I’ve said that the rods are different lengths, hence why the pistons have been matched on the deck height and rebalanced. If the engine is junk so be it, it’s been fun building it. Funny how all the engine builders I’ve spoken to have said it will be fine.

in the old days conrod length was addressed by honing gudgeon bush off centre to make them all the same length,
