I've been watching test cricket for about 25 years now and Stokes' 135* against Australia at Headingley to win the game is the greatest test match innings I've ever watched. Not the greatest Ashes innings, not the greatest innings by an English player, I mean THE greatest test match innings I've ever witnessed. The patience he showed at the end of day 3, watchfully making 2 runs from 50+ balls; and then to come in on day 4 and lead his side to victory while wickets tumbled all around him... it was breathtaking. Some of the shots he played, given the situation, bordered on the absolutely ridiculous; and yet it was exactly what England needed to get over the line. You've got to have brass balls to even attempt a switch hit reverse slog a spinner of Lyon's calibre, let alone manage to hit it for 6. Even if Lyon had managed to convert that incredibly simple run out opportunity with England still 1 run behind, the match would still have been remembered for Stokes' heroic knock. His mental fortitude is just as strong as his physical game. I hope he can maintain his ferocity and dedication for his whole career and be remembered as one of the greats of English cricket.
