Tommy's mom in the movie is Martin Scorsese's mother in real life. She has done cameos in some of his other movies. All Italian men love their moms, for sure!
The "I'm Funny How" scene was improvised by Pesci. It comes from an exchange that Pesci had in his life with a real mobster. Scorsese let Pesci bring it into the scene and only Liotta was wise to it, so Pesci and Liotta could work it out. The reactions you see from the other actors are real, because the exchange was not in the script at all. It's a really good scene.

If you go to 6:53 of the video CI says, "That worries me though, how he had everybody else fooled too. Nobody knew he was joking." The point I was making is that none of the other acters around Pesci and Liotta knew what was going on, so the reactions were genuine. When CI said, “nobody knew he was joking” is exactly right; no one knew. That information is more for CI to understand how that well that scene was executed.

I consider Casino to be the (older) sibling piece to Goodfellas. They’re very similar, but still so very different. (That’s not a comment on which is better, as I know most hold Goodfellas in higher regard.)
I like to view Goodfellas, Casino, and Wolf of Wall Street as a sort of loose trilogy. Kind of a dark, criminal inversion of the American dream idk I may be full of shit.
I love the part where Tommy's mom asks them to eat "no we're busy we gotta go" (literally do because they have a body in trunk) but it's an Italian mom so it automatically cuts to them eating because there's no way to get out of that. That's not exclusively Italian either, every old country grandma is like that. The toughest character in the film

Update on the real-life characters: Jimmy died in prison in 1996 at the age of 65. Tommy Hill died in 2012 at the age of 70. Karen Hill's whereabouts are unknown, but is confirmed to still be alive. There's an epic moment where a famous gangster's name is mentioned... Michael Franzese... he happens to not only be alive, but he has his own TH-cam channel and it is EPIC with all the stories of his real-life experiences of former gangster activities. You will soak his stories up like a sponge on water.
The whole scene with Tommy's mom in the kitchen was ad-libbed, there no lines written because Scorsese wanted it to be spontaneous chatter led by his mother who really did cook a meal and paint the picture.

@Wacky Movie Clips facts, Gotti had his opinion on DiSimone early, alotta people have their opinions on the “Boss” Gotti but not many people know his rise to get there. He was a highly respected enforcer before he was “the Dapper Don” How else would ya get away offing the boss of your own family without the commissions greenlight, only to have them thank you for having the balls to do so? In the beginning he says "I always wanted to be a gangster" and the movie does not fail to show why. But it also shows how all the 'fun' is made possible because the people involved are amoral and merciless. These are the kinds of people who don't actually care about anyone else. Jimmy might act like he's upset Tommy was killed, but as we hear in the voiceover, Henry and Jimmy were thinking about how Tommy becoming a made man benefits them and with him dying they lose those benefits.
No one mentions Lorraine Bracco's role in this. I think she did a great job. She represented a sense of normalcy while being tough. I can't think of anyone else who would do as well... except maybe Marisa Tomei.
She was great and her characters dynamics were awesome. A goody two shoes Jewish girl who knowingly gets into a relationship with a gangster and then marries him. Gets involved with the drug scene and then plays the "babe of the woods routine" when confronted by the FBI guy.
She chose to play Melfi instead or Carm because she already did the Carm role to great success, remember her talking about how they tested her for both roles, but she had the gravitas to choose in order to get her to sign on. Otherwise, we wouldn't have been introd to Edie Falco's talent.
Many women like this movie because of the detailed development of Bracco's character. She gets quite a bit of screen time, which is pretty unusual for such a 'guy' movie. Scorsese is a true master.

They both looked exhausted and depressed sitting there. That's what Marty was trying to convey -- that the mafia life is a destroyer of people and families. He laments that a lot of younger viewers don't seem to get that. .
Samuel L Jackson is in every movie from 1985 til now. If you can't see him in a movie today, that means he is doing a cameo in the backgroung or wearing a mask.

Best Gangster Flick ever made! Nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture, but 7/8 went to Dances With Wolves. Joe Pesci won Best Supporting Actor for this movie.
Apologies to Kevin Costner but that was highway robbery in retrospect. Not quite as bad as the Academy snubbing Do The Right Thing; that was outright disrespect.

the real tommy , tommy de'simone was his name was much more crazy then what joe pesci portrayed him out to be in this movie. and he was a bigger guy too about 6' 4 " and about 250 pounds. he killed a man on the street because he wanted to try out his new gun .
This film is a masterpiece. And yeah, they nailed the casting perfectly with the young Henry. Lots of these cast members later appeared in the Sopranos.
Henry Hill believed it was John Gotti himself who either presided over Tommy's death, and maybe even killed him, too. Gotti and Batts were close friends.
That shot when Henry and his girl walk through the kitchen into the Cococabana is such a great shot, first take one take. Amazing watch every time. I especially loved that part when he says he's a union delegate 😄
There is an unofficial sequel to this film called "my blue heaven". The screen play was written by the wife of the guy who wrote the book this film is based off and is a satirical look at Henry's life in witness relocation. That film even came out shortly before Goodfellas
When they killed Billy Batts it wasn't just about the jokes with Tommy. Jimmy didn't want to give back his loan sharking businesses and such when he got out and wanted them back.
There are a number of little things that would explain more but were difficult to put in the script. Henry performed poorly in school because of dyslexia.

Sammy Gravano had dyslexia, maybe that's where Henry got the idea to claim the same.

The thing that really sets you apart from other reaction channels is that you come in with what seems like a great deal of knowledge in film criticism and that really makes these videos so much stronger for me.
One of the things I love about this movie is how well they depicted the life of Italian people in the 60s and 70s. I grew up in an Italian family in the 60s and 70s, and many of these scenes are spot on. I don’t mean the mob stuff, just the daily life stuff. Especially the scene in the backyard where Pauli and the crew are eating sausage sandwiches. That one always reminds me of my Aunt Dot and Uncle Joey’s backyard cookouts. I’m immediately six years old again!
The Joe Pesci scene where he’s like “funny how?” When he says “I worry about you sometimes Henry, you may fold under questioning..” was all improve ,foreshadowing the end of the movie. That’s why everyone lost it when he said it😂
During the grandma scene - when they got the guy in the trunk- that’s actually Scorseses mom. Ha. Apparently he wouldn’t give her any direction. He just told her to show them the picture. And to treat them like she would normally treat his friends. Like she had no script or any idea what the film was about. Kinda cool.
When you said what movie was Samuel L. Jackson not in in the 90s I immediately blurted out Jarassic Park and the very second after I said it I knew I was wrong 😅 He truly was in almost every frickin movie!
I noticed that when you watched this movie and Raging Bull you gave fewer comments than on a lot of other reactions you've done. Like you were mesmerized by the dialog and performances. I know the feeling. I saw this movie in the theater when it came out. I was blown away. I couldn't stop thinking about it. This movie stayed with me longer than any movie I saw before it or after it. I probably went back to the theater to see it 10 more times, and have seen it nearly 100 times on video and on TV since it was released. It infiltrated my mind like no other movie I've ever seen. And what you said about learning why and how they do things is so true. You get to not only learn but also feel the characters and their actions. It magically immerses you into their lifestyle. Before he played Henry in Goodfellas, Ray Liotta got his Start on The Soap Opera Another World where he played Joey Perrini. His TV Sister Angie was played by Maeve Kinkead who would later play Vanessa on Guiding Light (It's Sister Show). She is also The Sister in Law of Meryl Streep. There is a lot of information on the true story behind this movie available on the internet. Here are just a few tidbits: Henry Hill was a real person. The other characters were based on real people: Paul Vario became Paulie Cicero; Jimmy Burke became Jimmy Conway; Thomas DeSimone became Tommy DeVito; and Ed McDonald, who played the prosecutor who talked Henry and Karen into Witness Protection -was- the actual prosecutor who talked Henry and Karen into Witness Protection.
What makes this fascinating is it's a true story. Romanticizing gangsters goes pretty far. Which leads me to suggest what must come soon after this Reaction. The Godfather. An offer nobody can refuse.

This was the real life story of Henry Hill played brilliantly by the gorgeous Ray Liotta (yes I've had a crush on him since this was released 🥰). Tommy was a true psychopath - Pesci is just SO good. One of my all time favorite movies and great music too. Scorsese is a master 🙌 and I (and most people who have seen this movie) quote lines from it often!

I was about 13 back in 1996when i watched this. I snuck downstairs and put on the tv and by chance it was one i had no idea what i was watching at the time but i was glued to the entire movie. What masterpiece.
That was an early short cameo for SLJ. I think he was in a Spike Lee joint in 88/89ish, but I don't recall him in anything prior to that. He had a similar quick hello and goodbye in True Romance (1993) and then blew up after Pulp Fiction. He maybe got bit roles, but he was in 5-7 of em every yr since the beginning, it seemed.

That shot when Henry and his girl walk through the kitchen into the Cococabana is such a great shot, first take one take. Amazing watch every time. I especially loved that part when he says he's a union delegate 😄

The screen play was written by the wife of the guy who wrote the book this film is based off and is a satirical look at Henry's life in witness relocation.

This is one of the most re-watchable films in movie history. By the end, you feel like you've been gut punched, in a good way.
When they killed Billy Batts it wasn't just about the jokes with Tommy. Jimmy didn't want to give back his loan sharking businesses and such when he got out and wanted them back.
There are a number of little things that would explain more but were difficult to put in the script. Henry performed poorly in school because of dyslexia.

He never walked in through the back entrance of the Copa Capana (except maybe with someone else like Paulie). I even doubt he had all that much contact with Paulie, other than at family things and Paulie smashing his wife, Paulie was a Capo, Henry was merely connected.
And plenty of other things.... Sammy Gravano had dyslexia, maybe that's where Henry got the idea to claim the same.

But what does someone calling in prove? Nothing. He could have paid someone to make that call. It's not like they verify and screen calls THAT much.
Law enforcement, including the Feds, say the story is bullshit. There wasn't even a sign of a hole having been dug, where he claimed the body was (or where it was "initially").
Other people in the mob, who knew Henry (such as Michael Franzese, who wasn't just some connected guy, but a Capo), have also called him a liar on several things, incl. the Copa Cabana thing.
He was a nobody in the mob, and he's bigging up his own story.
Just like Frank Lucas ("American Gangster") is a huge liar and exaggerator, who's story got ever more outlandish, before and after he gave that interview, that lead to his movie deal.

One of the things I love about this movie is how well they depicted the life of Italian people in the 60s and 70s. I grew up in an Italian family in the 60s and 70s, and many of these scenes are spot on. I don’t mean the mob stuff, just the daily life stuff. Especially the scene in the backyard where Pauli and the crew are eating sausage sandwiches. That one always reminds me of my Aunt Dot and Uncle Joey’s backyard cookouts. I’m immediately six years old again!

The Joe Pesci scene where he’s like “funny how?” When he says “I worry about you sometimes Henry, you may fold under questioning..” was all improve ,foreshadowing the end of the movie. That’s why everyone lost it when he said it😂

During the grandma scene - when they got the guy in the trunk- that’s actually Scorseses mom. Ha. Apparently he wouldn’t give her any direction. He just told her to show them the picture. And to treat them like she would normally treat his friends.
Like she had no script or any idea what the film was about.

His life story in the book Wise Guy is brilliant too, I found myself reading it in my mind with Ray Liotta's voice.

I noticed that when you watched this movie and Raging Bull you gave fewer comments than on a lot of other reactions you've done. Like you were mesmerized by the dialog and performances. I know the feeling. I saw this movie in the theater when it came out. I was blown away. I couldn't stop thinking about it. This movie stayed with me longer than any movie I saw before it or after it. I probably went back to the theater to see it 10 more times, and have seen it nearly 100 times on video and on TV since it was released. It infiltrated my mind like no other movie I've ever seen.
And what you said about learning why and how they do things is so true. You get to not only learn but also feel the characters and their actions. It magically immerses you into their lifestyle.

Before he played Henry in Goodfellas, Ray Liotta got his Start on The Soap Opera Another World where he played Joey Perrini. His TV Sister Angie was played by Maeve Kinkead who would later play Vanessa on Guiding Light (It's Sister Show). She is also The Sister in Law of Meryl Streep. Their Mother Rose was played by Kathleen Widdoes who played Emma Snyder on As The World Turns (Another Proctor & Gamble Soap Opera) who was in The Movie The Group written by Mary McCarthy that many folks feel inspired Sex & The City.

There is a lot of information on the true story behind this movie available on the internet. Here are just a few tidbits: Henry Hill was a real person. The other characters were based on real people: Paul Vario became Paulie Cicero; Jimmy Burke became Jimmy Conway; Thomas DeSimone became Tommy DeVito; and Ed McDonald, who played the prosecutor who talked Henry and Karen into Witness Protection -was- the actual prosecutor who talked Henry and Karen into Witness Protection.

Story is, Scorcese asked Tony Bennett personally for permission to use "Rags To Riches" in the opening.
I heard Tony Bennet was his second choice. He asked Frank Sinatra for a song but Sinatra refused - Sinatra was still pissed at the character Johnny Fontane in the novel and film 'The Godfather' being based on him and he opposed all Mafia / Mob movies for their portrayal of Italian Americans. Scorsese went ahead and used Sid Vicious (of the Sex Pistols) punk-rock version of Sinatra's signature song "My Way" to get back at him.

This was based on Henry Hill's book, and an accurate description of everything.
The spider scene got me because at that moment I saw Henry thinking “but for the grace of God go I”.
This was the real life story of Henry Hill played brilliantly by the gorgeous Ray Liotta (yes I've had a crush on him since this was released 🥰). Tommy was a true psychopath - Pesci is just SO good. One of my all time favorite movies and great music too. Scorsese is a master 🙌 and I (and most people who have seen this movie) quote lines from it often!
This movie is so good, especially because of how poorly crafted movies are today.
Like the opposite of " The Godfather" Takes all the romanticism out of the Mafia lifestyle.
Oh, and nobody except Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta knew the "How am I funny?" scene was coming.

I was about 13 back in 1996when i watched this. I snuck downstairs and put on the tv and by chance it was one i had no idea what i was watching at the time but i was glued to the entire movie. What masterpiece.

That was an early short cameo for SLJ. I think he was in a Spike Lee joint in 88/89ish, but I don't recall him in anything prior to that. He had a similar quick hello and goodbye in True Romance (1993) and then blew up after Pulp Fiction. He maybe got bit roles, but he was in 5-7 of em every yr since the beginning, it seemed.
