Love watching Brits learn the American football game. The more you learn the game the more you'll want to watch. I struggle with soccer, or what you guys call "real" football, LOL. Young people in America really enjoy soccer and understand it but my generation didn't grow up with it. Almost all schools now have soccer programs. A couple of thoughts, you cannot trip a player, big penalty. If a receiver catches a ball and holds onto it long enough it's a complete pass then if he drops the ball in the field of play it's a "fumble" and it's a live ball and can be recovered by the opposing team and even run back the other way if he was not touched by the opposing team at the time of the recovering the football. One more thought, once the nose of the football touches any part of the goal line it's a touchdown, so the feet do not have to be inside the goal line so long as the carrier's knees do not touch the infield. Lots of rules and can get a little complicated but over time you learn them!! FYI College football is as big as the NFL in the US. Thanks gents, really enjoyed this.

Hi Frank, thank you for all the interesting information.
I used to follow it a lot in the 80's we had a 1 hour highlights show back then.
I was trying my best to explain the rules to BP1 he has no idea, he is more your soccer guy.
It always impressed me how the College football is so well supported in the US.
Even lower league soccer over here, you could go to a game and there would be a handful of spectators.
Thanks for watching and we like to visit a few interesting sports we know nothing about from time to time just to broaden our own knowledge.

@@BritPopsReact I thought your answers were pretty accurate overall. You know more than a lot of Americans. I wish I knew more about European football. I have to ask my son what is happening when I watch it with him. It has become very popular with young people. I live in South Florida and a big Miami Dolphin fan for decades and they have played in London 5 times, with a 1-4 record... ugh. I love seeing that stadium packed when they play there. To be fair, it's almost impossible to know all the rules and I get lost in them myself from time to time and the rules change a little every year. Would be fun seeing if American football caught on in Europe with a European league the way soccer has caught on in the states.

Kids here love soccer because its simple, no throwing or catching skill need just mindlessly running around, but you grow up and outgrow it.

I'm a 34 year old brazilian woman who just now started learning about american football, and it is just as adictive as real football LOL you should stick to learning our football, it is a different pace, but it's also fun to watch (you just need to find a league that you enjoy). And my favorites in the NFL are the big guys, especially the center, I think it is amazing how fast he acts, throwing the ball between his legs and immediately blocking the defense. (I also love the holder in the special teams, I would be so scared to hold a ball to be kicked so fast afterwards)

@@Jaqueli9er I watch (soccer) from time to time when with my son so he can explain what is happening. It was the one sport he really enjoyed as a child, he played goalie because he could kick really good. It's fascinating that your favorite is the center because they never get any love, LOL. You're right though that they have to be excellent athletes and so much is required from that position. They also have to be pretty smart. I've been a Miami Dolphin fan since they were formed in 1966. Miami does have a soccer team owned by David Beckham that maybe I should pay more attention to. Have a great day Jaque Cheers from South Florida

A FORWARD pass that is dropped or otherwise not caught is called an "incompleted pass", the play ends (the clock stops) and the ball returns to where the play started. A LATERAL or BACKWARDS (sorry for the caps) that is dropped is the same as a fumble, the play is still live, and the ball is a free ball meaniing anyone--offense or defense can fall on it (to obtain/retain possession) or pick it up and advance it toward your endzone. Falling on it is usually the safe thing because a football is hard to pick up when bouncing.

Some of the compilations do have mostly college football. But I wouldn't put them down too much for that. They aren't professional content creators. 5:02 You can definitely tackle around the ankles or knees. But these big guys have legs like tree trunks. Running backs do too & a running back will just jump over the low tackle. In college I remember they trained how to step out of a low tackle. But it rarely worked for me. It would probably be best to grab high or around the waist to at least slow them then a mate come in to knock his feet out from under him (slide tackle). Or just knock him off balance at the waist or higher. I do still follow college football & there are different training techniques to avoid being tackled (or at least brought down) now that are quite effective. 7:52 Touchdown is a bit of a misnomer guys. The ball doesn't have to be touched down to get a touchdown. Back 130 years ago this may have been required (where it got the name) just like rugby. But all you have to do now is break the plane of the goal line with the ball. So if there is a big sheet of glass on the end zone, if the ball is in the possession of a the player and breaks that glass, it is a touch down. Not their body, but the ball has to cross that. Alternately a pass caught in the end zone (even for a second) is also a touchdown. They can even drop the ball afterwards, the touchdown is already made. 8:29 This play is a bit more complicated (as is all American football rules). The defensive player caught the interception in their own end zone. So it will be a touch back. There is no score here but they did stop the other team from scoring & it will be brought out to Oakland Raider's 20 yard line & it will be their ball. 10:26 This one is a designed play. The big guy isn't just in the right place accidentally. He was sent down field as a receiver. 11:07 Not quite. If a forward pass is dropped and never had possession of it, it is called an incompletion (dead ball at that point). Now if a forward pass is caught (in possession of the ball) then they drop it, it is a fumble (ball still in play) and any player defensive or offense can go for it. 12:13 This maybe the best big man moment of all. Larry Allen (325 lbs) just chased down a speedy linebacker that just intercepted the ball. That is so classic. And not likely to be seen again for a long time. The movie 'The Blind Side' is a tribute to all big men in football. But it's greatest inspiration may have been Larry Allen.
Now I have a question . . . In your new intro, what is BP1 pointing down at? LOL!! Great reaction.

Hey, Thanks for all that information, you really went into detail and that's very kind of you.
Sorry it took so long to reply, the comment got buried under a load of others.
I used to be really into NFL back in the 80's we had a highlights show on a Sunday night, presented by Mick Luckhurst.
I read all the books in the rules and followed the Rams and 49's with Montana and Rice.
I seem to remember Fridge taking part in the Worlds Strongest man Tv show we had over here in the UK.
As for the blind side, watched that a lot of times.
I still keep up with a bit of it now and we have a new highlights show over here on a Saturday night, with co-presenters Jason Bell and Osi Umenyiora.
There was also another NFL show that followed the progress of some UK guys trying to make it into the NFL that I watched a lot of.
Right, I rambled on a bit there.
      Thanks for all the support.
      Cheers for now

You don't have to touch the ball to the ground to score a touchdown. On the plays where you see the ball carrier dive into the endzone, the player is just showboating. To score a touchdown, the player only needs to get the ball across the goal line.

If a pass is ruled to be caught and then the receiver drops it ,that is a fumble ,it is a live ball and anyone can grab it .,but if the receiver juggles the ball without making a catch ,that ball is dead when it hits the ground and the play is over .

  • @johnathan5291
    @johnathan5291 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

In the NfL a catch is, touching both feet on the ground with the ball secured in your hands. If the ball is dislodged after this process it is fumble ( a live ball) and which ever team recovers the ball will start the next play on offense. If the ball is dislodged during the catching process, it is an incomplete pass ( a dead ball) the team with possession goes back to where they started the play, and runs another one. Those 2 passes to offensive linemen in the endzone, the play ended when they had secured the ball and had both feet down In the endzone.

To score a touch down, only the very tip of the ball has to cross the plane to the end zone.
As far as tackling, tripping or using your legs to intentionally tackle is illegal. Anything above the neck is technically illegal although a penalty is not always called. You also can’t pull a player down from behind by grabbing anywhere around there neck or inside the top of the jersey, this is referred to as horse collar tackle. You can still take out some one’s legs/knees and pretty much anything else.

Cant trip anyone--that is a penalty. Arms tackle for a big guy like rugby. All of these guys learned proper tackling technique--wrap legs, drag runner down, but many times the big hit in a tackle is done to: 1) separate the man from the ball so that your team can get it and go on offense, and/or 2) make an impression on the runner/receiver that it is going be really bad if he comes back in your area--get in his head--might drop a pass or not fully reach for a pass that requires full extension. Rubgy is a contact sport. Football is a collision sport--and the collisions are at times part of the strategy to win. But with these big guys, you want to go low and leg tackle as in Rugby.

Slide tackling is a penalty in American football. You can grab someone around the legs but you can't use your legs to trip them up or knock them down. Also, as long as the ball crosses the plane of the goal line under control of the player (i.e. not knocked out of his hands), it is scored as a touchdown. In the old days, you had to actually touch the ball down on the ground in side the goal area, but that isn't the rule nowadays.

The big guys in this video are mostly the guys trying to stop the quarterback from getting that ball to who ever is his choice for that play. It’s why it’s so exciting when they sometimes get their hands on the ball and try to get it to the opposite end of the field
