  • Our family's first video game was a Binatone TV Master. I've previously written an orchestral piece featuring the sounds of the game:
    • Rondo for Binatone TV ...
    and later an extended version:
    • Rondo for Binatone TV ...
and wanted to do the same in a different style.
Video includes footage of my Vic-20 game which emulates the Binatone, available on the Penultimate 2+ cartridge from Future Was 8 Bit

Loved it. My family had a similar first game console. It was called the Venture Video Sports (look it up if you're bored). I remember that all-too-familiar dink, dink, boink, dink sound. My sister and I played it for hours at a time. I liked how you made an homage to the original with that 8-bit key sound. Fun cover.

Thanks Kale, I think that sound will chime with a lot of people of a certain age! I would love to hack a real binatone and make some kind of 3-key controller to play the sounds but I'm not sure that's possible. Pretty sure it would be a simple square wave which you can get in any number of ways. I did once get our original machine hooked up and establish that it plays a b in 3 octaves.

My family never had anything like that, my father probably thought that they rotted the brain, later in life though he became an avid gamer, he did however arrive home one day with an ohio scientific c1p computer which was the beginning of the long slide into musical madness. Once again listening was accompanied by a big smile.

Thanks once again. The funny thing is that our parents bought ours one Christmas, and almost got caught by us playing with it before Christmas!

Very nice, love to see and hear that Binatone again :) Are you actually counting out the Binatone beep timing? I can't figure out the pattern, but it works!

Thanks for popping by Robin! No, the Binatone part doesn't relate to actual gameplay, it's intended to be more of a musical improvisation on three notes. That's a wonderful limitation and I recommend trying it! I guess another idea would have been to capture the sound from an actual game and build a track around that, but I didn't do that (at least not this time!)

(in gameplay, the lower beep is the ball bouncing off a wall, middle beep is the ball bouncing off the bat and the highest one is scoring a point, so I tried to bear in mind that the lower one should happen most often, and the higher one just an occasional accent or end of phrase.)
