Music for an Imaginary Martial Arts Game, entirely using MIDISID

This is an original tune that goes back a long way and if you rummage through my older videos you'll find versions (sometimes called Eastern Promise) played using real C64 (3 voices).
This time I wanted to use MIDISID and make a multitracked version using SID voices. It still doesn't use a large number of voices. There are six tracks in Logic, including two percussion tracks that somehow didn't get included in the video, and I'm mostly using polyphonic mode but I think the chords just have two or three notes. The only effect I've applied is a little reverb on the recorder. The rest is as captured from the back of MIDISID.
The advantage of multitracking is that you can set the relative levels of the voices, which is hard to do with SID when you're using different sounds using different waveforms.

hi do you plan on making a expanded version with say 4/6/8 sid chips? fantastic work well done

That's a really good question. Yes, since the start I've had the idea in my head of the 'MIDISID beast' with 6 SIDs, so that it can cover all 16 MIDI channels. The device is modular and I have a way to connect 3 bottom boards (only one needs the microcontroller and midi circuit, the other two carry the SIDs and output stages) and one UI board. The software is written in such a way that it can be configured and built for more SIDs / voices. There are enough GPIO connections on the microcontroller for the chip select lines of the other SIDs. There's just one problem I haven't really solved yet - there would be 3 stereo outputs (or 6 signals) that would need to be mixed. I have the parts I need for all of this in a box, I just haven't got around to it yet.

@@midi_in fantastic , i have always wanted a polyphonic sid synth, the 3 voices per chip has always been great now if you do go ahead with your vison, please consider that if say someone like me wanted to play each sid chips 3 voices per key.
which is my ideal way to use polyphony as there is only a single filter per chip & using the envelope you can make some real nice sweels of beautiful gritty chords much like a traditional synth.
I always have respected the sids gritty osc and recall you could even osc sync between voices and choose the waveforms or combinations of wavforms per voice per osc per chip.....
      It gets really deep
if i can recollect correctly you could bypass the filter on a per voice basis also that would be handy.
So say chip 1 voices 1,2 into filter voice 3 unfiltered .
Regarding the audio path if you go seperate outs please also add a summed mix out also.
Ive subd to your channel and will follow your progress, if you need help funding your vision i would be totally down to prepurchase via gofundme ...
      Goodluck

Oh wow. That did sound like a fighting game. Some sort of adventure game where you're a ninja making your way through villages or something. All of the sudden, here come the bad guys. 😆

@@midi_in LOL. It's a blessing some days and a curse on others.

I'd like to see a demo of ringmod being used such as in Rob Hubbard's Zoids. If that can be reproduced, I'm in..

I will definitely do a demo in the near future. The menus give you control over the ringmod and sync bits for each voice, and also the tuning offset in cents for each voice. There are one or two presets that use the effect, but I'm sure there are others who would be able to design better sounds than me.

    Nice! Like a modern Sidstation.

Heh, the recorder sounds so good, I thought for a minute you were playing along with the machine on a real recorder. :)

Well, that's an interesting point. I thought about this while making the video. I'd love to be able to play it and do it justice. I'm going to try. It'll take a little practice, but if it works out I may well release another version of this tune in the future rendered on SID voices and real recorder.
