"Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the little-known prison film Unchained (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages

I saw them in concert and when Bobby sang this song he came down from stage and stood in front of me for the last part of the song. I was 13 and when he walked away, I had to reach out and touch him. He turned and winked. I thought I was going to die! I am now 67.

This doesn’t even sound real when I say this. My aunt met him in a hotel and he asked her on a date. She turned it down!!! I can’t even make this up. She said he was beautiful and friendly but she had her eye on someone else and at the time didn’t know him. ( not sure if it was the beginning of his career or not) still amazing to hear and I know this is factual as well.

@Jeremy Marsh Elvis is very versatile but he does many songs his voice and delivery are not suited for. I don't know anyone who has done more covers than Elvis, so some of them are not up to his regular standard. But still, no one can do this number like Bobby Hatfield did in this live recording. Not even his studio recording matches up with this.

This one was a live performance, the one used in Ghost was a recording of the same singer, but not the same rendition.
However, the song itself was originally written and recorded for a prison movie called “Unchained” in 1955, so this was a cover 10 years later.
The Righteous Brothers version, by the tenor “brother” Bobby Hatfield, became *the* most successful, iconic version.

They will celebrate 59 years this month and have never had another love nor been intimate with anyone else. I am so proud of them! My dad was diagnosed with incurable metastatic gall bladder cancer last year, May of 2019. He was given 2 mos to live but is still with us September 2020!. They spend precious moments together each and every day and had a "last dance" to this song last July 2020. My dad is no longer able to dance but this song can be heard playing throughout the house at least once a week. Very, Very special.

First off, Thank You very much for a excellent reaction. I could read the reaction in your faces and you didn't constantly interrupt one of the greatest live performances in history. To answer some of your questions, there were two Righteous Brothers. Bill Medley that sang Bass Baritone and Bobby Hatfield that sang Tenor. That was Bobby Hatfield is the one in this video. The song Unchained Melody was originally written for a movie called Unchained. It has been recorded by many artists through the years. But the day that Bobby Hatfield did it, he OWNED it and will forever be who people think of when the song is mentioned. This performance was live... No auto-tune or nothing. Just him and a microphone and zero mistakes. He went through 20 different notes in this performance. He was in a octave higher after 10. And the last note was a staggering G5 that very few singers can hit. The most amazing thing being that he never once strained. Just stood there and sang it like nobody else.
The Righteous Brothers got their name from Black Marines that came to watch them perform. The Marines would shout to them "That's Righteous Brothers!". Most of their songs were as a duet whose harmonies are off the charts. But they had it in their contract that on every album, a solo track would be included. When it came time for Unchained Melody, they flipped a coin and Bobby Hatfield won. Bill Medley later said that he was glad that Hatfield did.
I highly suggest you react to their 1965 LIVE Performances of You Lost That Loving Feeling and the LIVE Performance of Soul and Inspiration. You'll be glad you did.

The song was written for a 1955 movie called Unchained, about a guy in prison who couldn’t wait to get back to his girl. The guy who wrote the lyrics refused to put any of that stuff into the song so it became a general love song, sung by many before the Righteous Brothers did it .. but nobody else did it like this, altho many other singers covered the song later (including Elvis) and based their versions of it on this version by The Righteous Brothers ... It is a solo song, but the Righteous Brothers were a duo so they flipped a coin to see who was going to do it, and Bobby Hatfield won. The other member of the duo was Bill Medley who arranged the music for the studio version as well as for this performance AND he played piano while Bobby was singing .. so it was still a team effort. Bobby sang another version for the movie “Ghost “ and this revived interest in the 1965 version (this one) which was then re-released. The Righteous Brothers and this song made history by having two different versions of the same song in the Top20 of the charts at the same time, competing against each other!

I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

Unchained Melody was written for a prison movie titled 'Unchained' (1955). It was first sung in the film by African American opera singer, theatre and film actor Todd Duncan. It was composed by Alex North -(1910-1991) and lyrics by Hy Zaret (1907-2007). Since then it has become a standard. In 1965 in a live television performance on the (Andy Williams Show). The late great Bobby Hatfield of the 'Righteous Brothers' gave a performance that is one for the ages. His epic performance has made his version the quintessential version of them all. And ever since then recording artist from around the world has used, and uses his rendition today. The rest as they say is history. Bobby Hatfield died in 2003. R.I.P...
Note: Todd Duncan an African American who first sang the song in the movie was a true Renaissance Man...He was an opera singer, theatre and film actor. And was a professor at the fame Howard University. He also got his doctorate from Columbia University. He has a major supporting role in the (1955) movie 'Unchained.' Where he plays a prisoner in a medium security prison in Chino, California. The movie was based off the book titled 'Prisoners Are People' by Kenyon J. Scudder.
You can see Todd Duncan sing 'Unchained Melody' here on You Tube. And also the complete movie 'Unchained.'
    Great honest reaction...

Bobby Hatfield (the Righteous Brothers) was the same singer in this live version and the soundtrack in the movie Ghost. This live version was by far his best. I'm 72 and can tell you that when the young ladies heard Bobby sing this in the 60s that they turned to jelly. There is another Brother - Bill Medley - but they agreed to do solos - in this case Bobby Hatfield

Definitely 1965. I was 15 and I believe it was on the Andy Williams Show. We LOVED the boys because they were both from Orange County, Ca where I grew up. They were almost 10 yrs older than me and Bobby’s family lived about 2 mi from my house in Anaheim. Bill lived about a mile from my older brother’s (9 yrs older) future wife’s house in Santa Ana and she and Bill went to the same high school.

"It sounds like they had some distance between them." The movie "Unchained" is about a man who has served many years in prison and is due to be released in several months. He heard his wife was tired of waiting and was leaving him. He had a chance to escape and he is torn between escaping and going to his wife to keep her or serving out his sentence. The prisoner is played by a football hall of famer, Crazy Legs Hirshc. Over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages. The Righteous Brothers cover is the most popular. When they decided to sing the song they flipped a coin to see who would sing it, since it was a solo. The two singers were singing in a club one night when, after a particularly good song, a guy yelled out "That was righteous, brothers!". They adopted the name.

The Song itself is very old and there were 8 or 9 male singers before Bobby Hatfield, he is the only one who could do it justice, he even beat Elvis Presley. The reason he sang it on his own is because his partner has a deep voice as you can hear them both on "You lost that loving feeling" and "You're my soul and inspiration"
Love and Respects to you both. From Mario in the UK.
