I think the best thing about these Darknuts is that they are actually honorable. No dirty tricks, no special weapons. Just full on sword fighting to see who is the best. They even dismiss themselves honorably by throwing down their rapier when defeated, as a way of saying; You are better, now go forth.
Simon Barr I won't lie. I did enjoy the clashes between Link and Ganondorf to show off a struggle between good and evil, but they could have found a better way to do it. Quicktime events are not innovative, they are just annoying.
***** Yeah, I realized that a few months later. I'm guessing his regular sword must be a claymore than. Jeez, Darknuts are butch, they one hand wield a two handed blade. Are they all Ike?
Darknuts are, by far, some of the best enemies in video game history. -They are very-well designed. Knight-like armor, huge size, a sword and a shield, chainmail underneath and a rapier. -They are very capable fighters. Slow but powerful and calculating, and then easily staggered, but agile. -They are honorable, never cheating or resorting to dirty tactics. It’s just a sword and shield battle between two great fighters. When they fight you, they are more like “Accept my challenge, and then let’s see who is the best” rather than “Ugh, another idiot to kill”.
I've always thought that that these Darknut Knights are the best enemies to encounter in the Zelda series, they are human-like formed Knights, looks awesome and have well combat skills to put up a good fight, which makes all the difference. Beside the Darknuts I also favor there Aeralfos, despite that they fly and fights good as well.
The darknuts attacks are so weak. He should do 3 hearts worth of damage per hit, not just 1. His rapier should do half of that. Still an absolutely sick sub boss.
HylianLegacy4245 It's still possible, drop straight down from the platform to provoke the one that's directly beneath you and keep the fight within that small area until that one is down. Then creep up to the one at the very left until he gets provoked, lure him away and pick him off, rinse and repeat with the remaining two. Or you could do what most people do and pull of a morshu, chucking bombs at them once they're bunched up which is cheap in my opinion.
swampydaswampert I know, I did the same going into an epic 4v1 clash (then eventually discovered the method of picking them off 1 by 1). But yeah, it kinda feels dishonourable to kill them with bombs, it's really that easy. xD
The Darknut mini-boss in Hyrule Castle should be stronger than the normal ones. Like, in the first phase its armour should be twice as hard to knock off and its sword should take 6 hearts. And once the second phase starts its sword should take 4 hearts but it should move way faster to compensate, which would include recovering faster too. I mean, it's the last big fight before Ganondorf. You'd think he'd provide more of a challenge.
Mini bosses are good at looking badass but suck at doing decent damage. Seriously at least king bulbin deals 3 hearts worth of damage if i remembered correctly.
+Elijah Williams (Gameboynitro 9) Well TP HD will have Hero mode, and if you add Ganondorf amiibo, you will receive 4x more damage. Now THAT'S something. (Zelda Twilight Princess: Dark Souls edition, especially if you fight 4 darknuts at the same time).
+Luka R You'd...pretty much have to go through the entire game without taking damage and I happened to own a Ganondorf amiibo so yeah i'll have fun time ._.'
I think the real problem with this fight, and the game in general, is the fact that L-targeting automatically raises links shield. Just by looking at your enemy you become next to invincible. He should also do more dmg but everybody else already said that.
Another thing that exacerbates the problem is that even though a number of enemies can stagger you with their attacks (such as the Darknut's shield bash and kick), very few of them can follow up quickly enough to land a hit before you can get your shield back up. (I think Dynalfos and Ganondorf are capable of such a combo, but I'm not sure if there are any others.)
Iron Knuckle: Loses armor and goes faster Darknut Wind Waker: Loses armor and looks at its body This Dark Nut: Loses Armor, then throws its big sword at you
If you think about it, if one of these could wield a claymore in one hand, and have a large shield in their off hand, and have a full set of heavy armour, and chain mail under it, plus a one handed sword on top of that, and he can throw a claymore 20 metres with one hand, it makes sense that he'd be able to break his guard with a single slash.
The darknuts are my fucking favorite in this game I especially love the fact they have two phases going for a lighter style when they lose their armor. I just wish they attacked faster and more frequently and hit harder.
Of all the enemies, I enjoy fighting these guys for the simple fact that Link can't 'cheat' his way to winning via use of his gadgets and tools. It's the kind of conflict that you can only surpass through superior combat prowess.
I have to admit, even if Darknuts do inflict far less damage than in earlier games, this is still one of my favorite (mini)boss fights just based on how technical you need to be in defeating it.

Link is canonically 5’7” (170cm) (at least in OoT), so yes he is average adult size That Darknut definitely had to have been 8 or 9 feet tall. Pretty sure they’re not supposed to be human though so I guess it’s normal
I have a very good strategy on how to fight Darknuts, here goes: 1st Phase(Armored) 1) When they attack. do a back flip then proceed with a jump attack followed with regular slashes. 2) Or use a Helm Splitter, then follow up with regular slashes. 3) Another way is dodge their attack,by sidestepping away or aligning yourself away from their attack, then proceed with regular slashes. 2nd Phase(Unarmored) (They will be a lot quicker this time) 1) Use regular slashes, then do a jump attack straight after and do regular slashes again. 2) Do a shield attack, then jump attack followed by regular slashes afterwards. 3) Another option is to use the back slice, then followed up by regular slashes 4) The final option is to use a jump strike, then follow up with regular slashes. Do whichever option you're comfortable with
Twilight Pirncess is awesome, i think the only thing the could have imrpoved, as some of you have suggested, was the damage common enemies cause. I find it way to low, plus Link automatically puts his shield up when you target an enemy (even less oportunities to get hit). I think Ocarina of Time was perfect in that aspect, it's "Z targeting fighting style" and the damage enemies caused were perfectly balanced to develop challenging fights.
Unfortunately pretty much every enemy in OoT controls the fight and you can only attack when the wait time is up, besides the iron knuckle, Ganon and arguably Gerudo.
Toon Link: Big deal. I'm only twelve and I've defeated loads of darknuts. Sees second phase where the darknut uses his rapier. Toon Link: O_o never mind!
Best enemy in any Zelda game, too bad the game's mechanic Z-targetting mechanics and damage make it too easy (except for when you fight four in the Cave of Ordeals lol)
Amusingly, Windwaker is considered the game they are easiest in, yet they do 3 hearts damage with the jump attack in that one (Though I still think the hardest is the NES one when they have like 8 in a room that deal 2 hearts each).
+DrewPicklesTheDark Fighting Darknuts in WW is too easy, not because they do less damage (they don't) but because of the parry attack being essentially a glorified quick time ever and simplifies the game too much.
+StygianEmperor What's so crappy about Link, exactly? He can take on four of these guys at once, swim through the deepest lakes, walk on walls and ceilings. Hell, he fought a dragon! ... Darknut can't even dream of killing Link. Not even in Hero-mode..

+JustAnotherGaian Too thick to be an estoc. Well maybe not, but still on the thick side regardless. It's also on the short side. It just looks like a large longsword to me, though the crossguard has those things sticking out to the sides. Estocs have those.
Does anyone know what that pendulum-shaped sword that the Darknut wields is based off of in real-life? I've noticed that other characters from other games have used similar-looking blades, like Ganondorf during one of his victory poses in Super Smash Bros. Melee, as well as some characters from Final Fantasy X-2.
I feel like there would've been more gravity to the entire thing if the Darknut's body stayed there after the boss fight. It would've made it seem like more of a very powerful knight (like they are in the final dungeon and in the pit) rather than just another monster.
+masterwaylon It's the other way around really. Dark Souls is Zelda swordplay on ridiculous hard mode. Funnily I actually came here because I remembered that you could slash away the armor, after which you'd enter a different phace in the fight, that's really a typical thing I'm missing in the souls games.
@stephanlmao ...the sword Ghirahim uses is not a rapier. Rapiers don't have the natural curve that his blade does, it's probably a cutlass, saber, or something similar. Also keep in mind that his blade is supernatural, as seen by the way in snakes around to produce those red projectiles.
This fight could have slow motion moments. I know it would be out of place since the game doesent have anything like that but come ON. this fight deserves it.
Way I like to handle TP Nuts is to carefully get up close, then sidejump behind 'em while slicing at the same time. Good attack to start chippin away at that bulky armor. Once the armor's off they're a cakewalk
@skuckon My guess is that it´s actually a saber. IIRC, cutlasses are shorter and wider, perfect for the close battles in pirate ships. Ghirahim´s weapon -at least in his first battle, looks more like a military-type saber: long, sleek and curved, with the traditional hand guard.
In Hyrule: Total War, they are a race of feline-like people who spend their lives training with swords, and are the best infantry in the game, except they are slow and tire easily (Though they very rarely lose morale) They hail from the mountains to the west of the Gerudo desert, and have an alliance with the Gerudo
Yes, I get that they call it a rapier. I'm not saying that they don't. What I'm saying is that if you look at the design of the weapon itself, it does not match any design from the rapier's lifespan (around 1500 to some time in the 1700s). The design much more closely resembles a longsword or a similar weapon.
I just wanted to point this out, but after the darknut loses his armor, discards his sword in favor for his smaller long-sword, his fighting style is very similar to Ganondorf's when you fight him in the final climatic sword duel
Wana a challenge? Try using only the ordon sword, no shield, having only the final blow move learned, and only having the hearts you receive from bosses, and no potions or fairies.
What would have made this amazing sub boss perfect was give it the damage range or 3-4 hearts per hit on link to strike fear in the players like the iron knuckles did in Ocarina of Time.
I always found this darknut should have been labeled as an Ironknuckle as its armour needs to be destroyed individually like in Ocarina of Time, unlike the other darknuts that were mostly based around hitting them from behind.
The amount of damage they do is pretty irrelevant.. They're wicked slow, only have 2 attacks, and are pretty easy to dodge. Though, if you were to compare them to the darknuts in WW, iron knuckles would win by far.
I think something they could have done to make darknuts more fun and a little harder is when they shield bash you, They actually can get that hit in with their sword before you get your shield back up. Or maybe even like a kick that knocks your shield away followed up by a fast strike. I always just found it annoying they they could never get in that extra hit after knocking your shield away.
It would have actually been really cool if you had to use one of the "Hidden Skills" to actually defeat him. Quite sad it's easier defeating him in the wolf form lol.
2:37 Why are the minibosses in this game doing half a heart of damage in the sixth dungeon? Assuming you got zero heart pieces up to this point, which is pretty unlikely, you'd have 8 hearts under your belt. This means this minor boss battle about two thirds into the game would allow you to take up to 16 hits before dying, minimum, before you factor in potions or magic armor. That's a little ridiculous isn't it? Earlier in the video, when he has the bigger sword, that does a whole heart of damage, but even that is almost lightweight at this point with those other advantages in mind. I love this game but combat balancing was not its strong suit. Thank god for Hero Mode/Ganondorf amiibo in the HD version.
Oh wow, did anyone else notice that the pattern on the floor is exactly the same as the Light Medallion in Ocarina of Time? I literally only noticed this until now, and I've had this game since the day it came out!
It would be cool to see a special sub class Darknut, one that focuses on speed and quick and unpredictable defence breaking attacks, maybe it's just my imagination but I would love to see a Darknut based on a Samurai/Ninja warrior that would be a battle for the ages.
Yeah, though the creator did do his research, the mod is pretty solid, but yeah they are definitely not golems, as you can see in Wind Waker, they kinda look like jackals
Did anyone ended up avoiding the scene where we see the darknut throws the sword? I remember he threw a sword at me when I was getting hearts, and I was hit by that sword.
It's funny how a normal sized sword is considered a "rapier" in this game. Yeah, I guess anythings a rapier when you swing a 300 pound flattened piece of steel around all day.
I think the best thing about these Darknuts is that they are actually honorable. No dirty tricks, no special weapons. Just full on sword fighting to see who is the best. I have a very good strategy on how to fight Darknuts, here goes:
1st Phase(Armored)
1) When they attack. do a back flip then proceed with a jump attack followed with regular slashes.
2) Or use a Helm Splitter, then follow up with regular slashes.
3) Another way is dodge their attack,by sidestepping away or aligning yourself away from their attack, then proceed with regular slashes.

(They will be a lot quicker this time)
1) Use regular slashes, then do a jump attack straight after and do regular slashes again.
2) Do a shield attack, then jump attack followed by regular slashes afterwards.
3) Another option is to use the back slice, then followed up by regular slashes
4) The final option is to use a jump strike, then follow up with regular slashes.
Do whichever option you're comfortable with

That Darknut's lucky Link wasn't wielding a hammer.

Best version of Darknut ever, but too easy to appreciated enough.
Oh, yeah, let's just let the Darknut hit us and not take advantage of when it's stunned to make it look harder than it actually is.
Pretty sure this is where my love for games like Dark Souls came from
In Hyrule: Total War, they are a race of feline-like people who spend their lives training with swords, and are the best infantry in the game, except they are slow and tire easily (Though they very rarely lose morale) They hail from the mountains to the west of the Gerudo desert, and have an alliance with the Gerudo
A helm splitter CANNOT be executed on an armored Darknut, he will block the shield bach and then do a shiled bach followed by a slash with his sword.
I want another serious legend of Zelda the others ones do t even capture the field of depth this twilight princess is on.
Me too. A sequel to Twilight Princess that on the NX would be awesome. They could make it look like the Zelda Wii U tech demo!
Well, Zelda U is here and... I wish there was a darknut in it.
@Shard1697 It was actually done to show how much damage the Darknut will deal with the various attacks.
Iron Knuckles are WAY easier than Darknuts.
Yes, I get that they call it a rapier. I'm not saying that they don't. What I'm saying is that if you look at the design of the weapon itself, it does not match any design from the rapier's lifespan (around 1500 to some time in the 1700s). The design much more closely resembles a longsword or a similar weapon.
lol averted in that Helm Splitter and rolling spin move can be continously preformed as whirlwind attack to completely counter the Dark nut defenses
I just wanted to point this out, but after the darknut loses his armor, discards his sword in favor for his smaller long-sword, his fighting style is very similar to Ganondorf's when you fight him in the final climatic sword duel
Probably because they are the only "human" enemy in the game. Facing an fellow knight is the ultimate test of skill. that is what makes them awesome.
@skuckon the sword ghirahim uses is a rapier, it has that bend to it
It's a Scottish sword, very heavy and double edged. The landmine was given that name recently as well.
its because there's no easy way to kill them with an item, you just have to depend on your swordfighting to be able to kill them
I think something they could have done to make darknuts more fun and a little harder is when they shield bash you, They actually can get that hit in with their sword before you get your shield back up.
A darknut is a funny name for one of the strongest enemy' s
I cant wait to do this on the HD release on hard mode with the Ganondorf amiibo!
Boss battle aside, deez darknuts! Ha gottem!
The darknut mini boss was awesomely fun
this guy's armor was so much cooler than the ones in hyrule castle
It would be cool to see a special sub class Darknut, one that focuses on speed and quick and unpredictable defence breaking attacks, maybe it's just my imagination but I would love to see a Darknut based on a Samurai/Ninja warrior that would be a battle for the ages.
They should make a Zelda game feature where you can play as a Darknut and kick ass
@ZeldapediaVideo
Yeah. I don't call it a rapier, though. It's way too thick (even by a Darknut's standards) to be considered a rapier.
I love this mini-boss I thought it was so much fun.
I remember in Ocarina of Time when those guys took like half your health in one hit. That was scary stuff.
Those are iron knuckles my guy.
This fight was so hard on the Wii. Stupid thing would always spin attack and leave me open instead of a shield bash or do the wrong type of slash.
