yesss afterschool ep i a whole different vibe!! its more personal to melanie rather than crybaby the character
Excited to hear the afterschool tracks! love when artists share personal experiences; not that they have to, but I know it helps others who have went through the same things😌❤
You’ve got to watch the K-12 movie!! It’s amazing 🖤 I’m going to the Dallas and Fort Worth shows for the Trilogy Tour. Had to do both since she said she will be taking another 4 year or so break after the tour.
I'm glad she will take another break! I know it has to be exhausting for Melanie; she is feeding us! I definitely want to react to the K-12 movie😌 I am hoping to get to that before I go to the trilogy tour! I can't wait😌 Happy you get to see her 2x🥰
Sitting down with some popcorn to watch this reaction 😌
That’s totally gonna be me when I watch the K-12 film😍
Here are all the themes about the album and the songs (warning: Strawberry Shortcake, Orange Juice, Detention and Teacher's Pet have some spoilers from the K-12 film so if you want to skip these songs and wait for the film reaction is completely understandable)
Story and theme of the album
The album is set in Cry Baby's school and is told from her perspective. According to Melanie it is Cry Baby stepping outside of her family and love life and acting as a narrator for the album. Each track represents a different grade level from Kindergarten through 12th grade.
The album also introduces new characters, specifically friends of Cry Baby at her school, although Cry Baby is still a main focus. According to Melanie, "You're not learning about her, you're learning about the place that she's in and her perspective".
Wheels on the Bus
The song takes place on the bus ride to K-12 Sleepaway School. Cry Baby observes the students around her participating in inappropriate behaviors, such as having sex, smoking marijuana in the school bus, and bullying/harassment. She attempts to ignore it and is disgusted with the nature of her classmates. She acknowledges that the bus driver knows what is happening but is choosing not to address it.
The bus driver is likely a metaphor for the authorities, who see all the wrong things that are happening in the world but do nothing to stop it.
Class Fight
The song is about Cry Baby's jealousy of Kelly's relationship with Brandon as Cry Baby has a crush on him. The chorus of the song features an imaginary conversation between Cry Baby and her parents, with her mom telling her not to harm Kelly and her dad giving her strategies on how to fight.
Thematically, the song may be about how women are constantly put against each other, specifically in the music industry.
The Principal
The song is presumably a metaphor for the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump. It is a critique for how he is cruel and greedy, allowing innocent people to die just to get his way. Throughout his presidency, he divided the people in his nation and caused lots of suffering.
Overall, the song represents the point of view of people who are affected by a corrupt ruler, who only cares about themselves and their wealth, rather than the well being of the people they rule over.
Show & Tell
Similarly to Dollhouse, the song is about how celebrities are portrayed as 'perfect' by the public as well as how they're treated in the music industry. The lines, "Harsh words if you don't get a pic with me" and "There are strangers taking pictures of me when I ask "no more", also speak on an incident from 2016 where Melanie stopped fans from taking pictures of her without consent.
Nurse's Office
This song touches on the common problem of school bullying. Cry Baby, in the song, is being bullied so badly that she wants to fake sick to go to the Nurse's Office and get out of class. At one point, a teacher gets mad at her for speaking out when a bully cuts her hair, and Cry Baby goes through with her plan by pretending to have a serious illness, and is finally allowed to leave.
Drama Club
The song is about Cry Baby's peers in the K-12 film and how a lot of them do things they don't want for popularity. Cry Baby begins to feel pressured when she sees people being constantly judged for everything they say and how it usually ends in bullying. Cry Baby is met with fierce backlash when she proclaims that she will be herself and not 'play a character' for popularity. The song could also be about social media similarly to SPIDER WEB.
Strawberry Shortcake
The song is about how many girls are taught from a young age that they are only valued if they are attractive to men. This regularly causes them to feel insecure about how they look since they do not fit society's standards. Cry Baby takes several measures to change her appearance so that she is considered more attractive, such as waxing her legs and stuffing her bra so her breasts appear larger. Due to this, she draws an excessive amount of attention from boys, causing her to feel as if it is her fault that they are becoming distracted by her and her body-- in the film, the song plays during swimming class when Cry Baby has to wear a skimpy, school-provided swimsuit, further reinforcing the theme of the song. Therefore, the song addresses sexual harassment and carries a critique of r*pe culture and victim-blaming.
Lunchbox Friends
Melanie stated in an interview years prior to the album's release, that the song would be about friends in school who do not actually want a close connection at all. These people have high standards for who can be considered their "friend" and require them to appear a certain way. They also gossip and spread rumors about people they don't actually know.
Orange Juice
The song is about Cry Baby's friend, Fleur, and her struggles with bulimia. Fleur was a member of Kelly's posse, and thus was expected to maintain a specific figure to continue being her friend, which was the main cause of her eating disorder. She is shown to have a hatred for her body, but Cry Baby believes that she is beautiful and wants her to see herself with her eyes. The lyric, 'You turn oranges to orange juice' refers to how people with bulimia often throw up their meal after eating.
Detention
The song refers to the feeling of suppression and vulnerability while being in the public eye and having to put up a perfect image even if you are not alright. The place "detention" refers to being in the music industry, as many artists feel as though they have to present perfectly in order to not be criticized. Story-wise, Cry Baby is sent to detention after starting the food fight in the cafeteria during lunch.
Teacher's Pet
The song speaks on pedophilia, grooming, and inappropriate teacher-student relationships. Story-wise, it is about Cry Baby's best friend Angelita having a sexual relationship with their Biology Teacher. She wishes to have a serious relationship with him, however, he only uses her for sexual gratification. She questions why their relationship needs to be kept a secret if he truly believes that she is special and really cares about her. Angelita knows that the relationship is doomed to end, but she still wants to hold onto it, believing that it could be something more. The song is to spread awareness about grooming, pedophilia and children's safety.
High School Sweethearts
Cry Baby wants a lover who is honest with her and truly loves her, among other requirements. She doesn't want just a fling, she wishes to have a long-term relationship with someone who is committed to her and accepts her for who she truly is. At one point, Cry Baby threatens to kill her potential partner if they were to ever cheat on her.
Story-wise, this song is a possible callback to Cry Baby's experience with abusive and toxic relationships during her time in the album Cry Baby.
Recess
The song is about letting go of harmful and toxic people, as well as the importance of maintaining your mental health when times are rough. The pre-chorus could be touching on the music industry, as artists are often overworked and receive minimal breaks, while the second they take some time for themselves they are replaced by another artist. The song is also likely very personal to Melanie, as she mentions her grandmother, Lydia, several times, quoting advice that she had given Melanie when she was young.
I read all of this! You should write an analysis on this album; I love all the ideas and themes you talked about in the songs! I really love what you mentioned in Show & tell and teacher's pet. Definitely serious topics Melanie discusses in her music and I wish society would take them more seriously. Love the interpretations😌❤thanks for taking the time to write them💅🏼☺
I love this girl so much 😭💞💞💞
we love Melanie on this channel😍✨
yes, public school was literally hell I've seen some shit in public school lol so I get what you're saying.
There's such a gap between states too with public education! Like Louisiana needs to catch 😭 happy we can relate✨
08:02 that's the point that made me subscribe immediately after it.
Glad to have you here😌 Wheels on the bus really is a banger!
I love yours reactions, i'm a lyrics girl too and you pay so much attention, i love it
Thank you so sweet❤️ love my fellow lyric girlies✨the lyrics in music just speak to me and I love talking about them!
Here we go!!!
thanks for being here😌🙏🏻
Regarding the drama and hate that surrounded Melanie, she has a song called “PIGGYBACK” which she only released on SoundCloud as to not gain any revenue from it, the song is part of her response and to give at least for herself some sort of “closure” to the drama and fake allegations towards her, doing what she uses to express her feelings the best, music
I love that she released it on soundclound! Also the title "piggyback" is ICONIC. Imma have to go listen to that😌
Melanie actually wrote the principal about donald trump and what she thinks of him which i believe is just so iconic🤞🏻
High School Sweethearts and The Principal are literally my top 3, alongside Detention, but I also love Nurse's Office and Strawberry Shortcake lyrically.
Honestly, this is my least favorite album just because it doesn't feel as powerful sonically like PORTALS or Cry Baby, but that's only my opinion. It also has tracks like Teacher's Pet or Orange Juice that I don't enjoy at all.
You should totally react to After School EP, it's full of bops!
I really love portals!!! I still think it's my favorite, but after I relisten to Crybaby that might change! Nurse's office was WILD with the sound effects😱 can't wait to see what Melanie gets into afterschool😌
after school next ❤️❤️
🫡you got it!
You must watch the K-12 Film!!! ❤❤❤
excited to have my cinema experience soon with Melanie😌🙏🏻
Yes please react to the After School EP
I'm ready for the after school activities🥹
The movie has all the music videos in
perfect! I will most likely react to the film instead of the mvs separately; I'm so ready😍
Though the theme of k-12 (the standard version) is primarily the situations and settings of school and seeing it as being a much more condensed version of society and what we go through, I also see this album having political undertones, especially with how melanie wrote "The Principal" being about abuse of political and supreme power (Donald Tr*ump), as well as "Wheels on the Bus" being about how many people choose and activity ignore societal and political problems and pretend that they can't do anything about it nor speak about it.
I love how you wrapped up the theme of the album😌 I love the points you made about wheels on the bus too. Never thought about that song like that!
K-12 has a lottt of social commentary. Like for example in Class Fight her parents 'chiming in' represents how growing up in a bad family situation influences how the kids turn out (she kinda touches on that in the movie) and The Principal is about Donald Trump and other corrupt politicians/leaders. K-12 came out around the time that America was in a terrible state during Trump's presidency (protests, kids held in cages at the border etc). Show & Tell is about her fans treating her like a comodity for their entertainment. Detention is about being overworked and underappreciated.. etc. Her writing is really smart, took me a few listens to really get it
I l feel like K-12 was so relevant to everything going on at that time, but I also feel that it is still extremely if not pretty much spot on relatable to the current time period as well. Love how Melanie talks about powerful subjects in her music and does it in such an artful manner😌✨
@@toolertotmusicbox PS I drove to another city to go see K-12 at the theatres and it was so worth it 🥰 hearing all the songs for the first time through the theatre speakers was such an experience. Core memory for me
You don’t feel bad for Kelly if you get context from the movie music video she came out with.
can't wait to see😍 I will be eating my popcorn while I watch🤣
Pleaaase react to Fire Drill and Copy Cat (by Melanie) before the After School ❤❤
are those separate tracks from Melanie? definitely want to react to all of Melanie's art in time😌🙏🏻
