Hey Chris this was an excellent podcast as I’m back on a fat loss journey after having lost 30lbs on keto/carnivore a couple years ago and happened to put on 50lbs over the last winter. I’m now on a journey to create a diet that I can maintain indefinitely so as to lose the fat but then transition to maintenance for the rest of my life and avoid the bulk (fat bulk 😂)
Calories ultimately count. But a surplus of 25 kcal per day gives you 1kg gain per year. There is absolutely no way to determine your need and intake to that precision counting. The easiest way to go is to eat the right food and let your body and hormones do the hunger regulation. Low carb and two meals a day work wonderfully. Lost 8kg (8%) in two month not counting once.
Hey Chris. Hope you return to Aus soon. I've really enjoyed your interviews with Dr Israetel. I'd love to hear more split sex advice though. As a female I wasn't sure what was absolutely applicable advice to both sexes or mostly males. We are same same but different beasts.
I'm a primary care physician and I *WILL* recommend this whole fullsize movie of a video podcast to anyone who is interested in learning about any of this stuff. This actually was a masterpiece supported by excellent hosting. One of the best videos I've seen on TH-cam.
Hahaha you guys are so funny!! 😅🎉😂❤❤❤ I am an ex-professional-dancer who stopped dancing and gained a lot of weight. Now I am 44 and on my resistance training journey and enthusiastic about becoming and staying healthy! 🎉🎉😂😂❤❤😊😊
Yep I’d say my life is complete but that’s simply dogshit. However i am quite happy. Mike and Mike both interview and workout were great. And now Chris n Mike together. World is synergizing well.
I recently discovered Dr. Mike. I subscribed to his YT channel and listened to his content. I'm a 51 yr old Tongan female. I couldn't believe he said Tonga. Almost everyone knows what a Samoan is, but no one really knows us Tongan. He was spot on about our people! We do love to eat, and we are happy jolly people to hang out with. I've watched his stuff on hypertrophy, and I've downloaded the RP hypertrophy app. I don't count my calories, and I lift weights 5 to 6 days a week. I average about 15 k steps a day. Since applying what Dr. Mike says, I've gotten stronger, and I've lost fat and weight. It's so weird to lose fat and weight when I haven't really changed the way I eat. I just changed the way I exercise. I don't do cardio, but I work 12 hrs at a production type job, and that's how I get my steps in. Oh, I forgot, I also started taking creatine. For about a month or 2 ago. Thanks Dr Mike for all your useful advice!! I can bench as much as I used to in high school!! As we age, we need to lift heavy. At some point, when I stop losing weight, I'll probably change my diet more. Lol. But yup, this Pacific Islander loves to eat too much! Good thing I love lifting heavy just as much!
@@maxspromptsyes it does… and because I am dieting at the moment I fell asleep at ??:??:?? And then it ended at 2:22:32 😂😂😂 And what I noticed as I listened to the last 20 minutes of this video is that this is the best video to watch to learn how to maintain your weight loss (hopefully fat loss though and not just weight which can include muscle grin)
Started resistance training aged 46. That, with improving my nutrition has made a huge difference to my life. Dr Mike is right on the money by encouraging older women to lift weights.
@@MegaLaban12345irrelevant, even if he’s getting fat doing it it’s still 3 years of (hopefully) solid training gaining as much muscle as possible in a hyper caloric state. Just a matter of shifting the fat now
My background is clinical nutrition, I weigh at 50 what I did in college and am just as lean and i approve this message. People assume I am genetically blessed for looking younger than my age (weight maintenance is half the battle) and I tell them it is WORK. My favorite question is “what do I eat to lose weight?” My answer is always the same: “you’re asking the wrong question.” You have to eat less. Period. End of story.
Same for me, but it's much easier to maintain that appetite if you've never had periods of time when you were so ravenous that even packing on pounds couldn't stop you (which I think is what has happened to most people). It's actually better to never have to lose weight, that gives you the ultimate advantage.
@@CorporateQueen no I really think you need to train yourself to eat less. So your plan would be more of an initial step to do this. You really do get used to eating much less.
He's really a blessing to mankind. I sometimes listen to his lectures/podcasts with him just to brighten up my mood, not to mention how motivating he is to train
This is what happens when you put an excellent journalist with an expert in their field. Absolutely the best talk on weight loss I’ve ever heard. Chris. you just got my subscription.
I would REALLY love like a series of conversations between this two legends. like a 4 episode series or something like that. Going super in depth. These two together are magnetic.
Just search your query + RP, or RP Strength. e.g. "how to lose fat RP" Dr. Mike and RP have put out 1000s of hours of free information about diet, fitness and health + ebooks + an amazing diet app.
I have so many friends who listen to so many wacky things online about fat loss 'im not losing weight because I'm not eating enough calories' like fkn what bro? its nuts how over complicated people make nutrition and dieting for fat loss and overall health. massive props to Dr. Mike love this guy
If the profile pic is you then you have succeeded and may not be putting any women at ease about muscle mass any time soon women probably point at you and say oh no I don't want to look like him what's he doing curls that's off my list now
Measuring yourself along with weighing gives you a good idea of what's happening. My weight hasn't moved in 3 weeks but I've lost half an inch off my waist and put an extra KG/rep on most exercises. Tells me I've still lost fat but put a little muscle on, which is a good sign.
You can also go get a full body composition read. I lost 4 pounds but went down a lot with my body fat %. We have a complete nutrition shop here and it's 20$ to do it and u can do a comparison from previous readings.
I lost 18 kgs since February, thanks to Dr. Mike! At about 13-14 body fat percentage now. 3 more KGs, and I'm entering the maintenance phase, until November.

Also, I wasn't mentally obese before I began the cut, I gained 10 kilos intentionally, and it made losing weight easier because I wasn't really a fat guy mentally. I imagine it will be a bit harder, if you're an obese person by lifestyle, because you'll have to learn completely new skills and habits, and change the way you live completely. Don't let that discourage you though, you can do it, it may take much longer than you hope, but BE EASY ON YOURSELF, mental changes are not a linear progression, it takes time, discipline, and understanding of your shortcomings.
If you absolutely desire ice cream, I can 10000x recommend Ninja Creami and making your own. Milk, Almond Milk, Sugar-Free Jello flavor mix, a scoop of protein, zero-cal sugar, freeze for a day, pop into light ice cream setting, add 2-4 oreos into it, and that's like 300~ calories for a whole ass pint. It's been a game changer for me.
The biggest point for me is the point he made that you don't have to lose all the weight at once. I was 370lbs 18 months ago. Now I'm at 290lbs. I dropped 50lbs in about 3 months, maintained for 3 months and then dropped another 20lbs. Gained 10lbs and was like oh shit and lost another 20lbs. I'm just coming to the end of this maintenance phase and I'm going to have a stab at dropping another 20lbs over the next 3 months, with consistent resistance training. Eventually I want to get around 240lbs body weight. It will probably take me until the end of 2025 to do it but the important thing is that the weight has come off and it's staying off! Really useful information in this podcast, thanks 👍
Good work💪 I’ve always been 180-195 but now I’m 38 and havnt been active for a few years and got to 250….. nvr dealt with trying to lose weight before but it’s definitely not an easy task…. Hat off to ya keep going
@Saymyenameyo Thank you dude. I did manage to drop that 20lbs and I'm now in a muscle building phase. Back up to 272lbs but I think that's mostly water weight. Honestly in my experience too just follow Dr Mike and eat good healthy food and completely cut out the junk when dieting. You will find it pretty easy. Good luck with it, you got this!
Rarely have I chuckled so much while learning something so useful for my health 😂 Dr. Mike is such a good storyteller, I love how he packaged info into fun. Well done!
I've been into fitness and nutrition for ten years, including learning from TH-cam content for many years, and this is probably the best and most comprehensive video on this subject matter 💯💪 Another Modern Wisdom banger of an episode 🙏
Most people fail their diets, like he said, they don't do something that they can stick to long term. Find a "diet" you can stick to for the rest of your life, not just temporarily. Make it a lifestyle, and the weight will stay off. Great video, Mike always spitting facts.

Not really. He stated that protein is king and then lumped fats and carbs together and said that most people do better with a mix of those but some people do better with more of one than the other.

I haven’t been dieting for long, and I’m not obese at all, but I’ve grown concerned about my health and weight as I get older. I’ve noticed that most of my success so far is because of discipline and self control. I know ice cream makes me lose my mind, so I avoid it. I consciously decide not to eat it because I know I’m going to want more. Discipline, commitment, & consistency. Great conversation!
Takeaway from this video - science has come full circle through all the kooky "1 weird tips for a flat belly" and discovered that you really just need to do what grandma always said: eat your greens, some chicken soup, not too much, get a bit of exercise, and a full night's sleep.
A full night's sleep? Good luck with that when you've been dieting at a deficit for 2 weeks. Always the number one problem for me, and a lot of pro bodybuilders say the same thing. If your blood sugar drops too low, you will 100% wake up in the middle of the night starving. Most nights (like tonight) I can't even fall asleep when dieting.
@@mattysquizzato7094 what deficit are you on lmao all you need is like 300-500 calories if you can't handle that then you need to reconsider your health in general
I loved the last episode with Dr Mike so much I started following him on social media. Chris, I want you to know I do not hold you responsible for what I have been exposed to since that fateful day. I just thought you should know that.
I’m surprised that I absolutely loved this ! Mike has my same awkward sense of humor. I appreciate his expertise and compassion. I appreciate that he doesn’t jump on the uninformed bandwagon of negativity on glp1s. Thank you.
Great podcast with Dr. Mike Israetel (PhD). I follow him, Dr. Eric Helms (PhD), Dr. Layne Norton (PhD), Meno Henslemen and Jeff Nippard as well. When it comes to nutritional sciences Dr. Norton is second to none. When it comes to exercise physiology and volume recommendations Dr. Mike Israetel is also second to none. With that being said I like Dr. Eric Helms the best. All the above docs know their stuff indeed. But not all of them are natty, and once you cross over to using "PEDs" things just become easier for you than going full natty. I am an intermediate weightlifter, but I also don't compete. I do it so that as I age, I can maintain as much strength as working out, nutrition, and creatine will take me (currently I am 45). Finally, I just want to add that there was one thing that Dr. Israetel said that I disagree with. As of March 5, 2024, the website "Medical News Today" wrote an article about how researchers looked at data from the U.K. Biobank, which found that frequent consumption of sweetened drinks whether they were naturally sweet or artificially sweetened like DIET SODA carries a heightened risk of afib with ARTIFICIALLY SWEETNED DIET SODA CARRYING THE GREATEST RISK. Furthermore, the findings (Abstract) were published in a journal of the AHA called "Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology". DISCLAIMER: I used to drink 1 diet soda a day, because it was a good change up from water (or so I thought) but now I have switched to regular soda and drink it about 3x per week (average), which totals to about 36oz a week. Don't get me wrong, I'm an avid water drinker, but I do like a change up every so often, (like with my dinner meal). As a person that respects evidence-based research I believe that ALL THE EVIDENCE should be considered in order for a person to make an informed decision. I still like Dr. Israetel and I assume that he was not aware of this rather recent publication.
This is the 3rd time he's been a guest here. I think the first podcast was more on his views on different subjects, the second was about hypertrophy and then this one

Can't believe Mike just dropped an entire course on fatloss for free on a RANDOM channel. OMG. Like I only came here because of that recent vlog video, wasn't intending on finding this absolute GEM of an interview.
Training abs is something I find helpful as a woman who wants a particular physique but doesn’t want to get down into unhealthy body fat percentages (Sub 20%-ish). Having my abdominal muscle be a bit thicker is helpful for that, so I train them like I would any other muscle for hypertrophy. Full range of motion, 3-ish sets of 10-20 reps (rep range that works for me) of 2 exercises 2x per week. Also helps because (1) I train jiu jitsu so being able to move powerfully through kind of a v-up range of motion is helpful. (2) I climb so having a lot of endurance through a leg raise type of motion is helpful. Train for your goals. Doing some random half hour or hour long ab routine is, for a lot of people, just taking time that could be better spent elsewhere.
I would never argue that. I do think it’s misleading when people say calories are all that matter though even though it’s true. I believe most people will maintain a healthy weight if they just eat healthy minimally processed foods and minimal sugar. You can also lose weight by counting calories and eating less of what ever you want like that professor who lost weight eating Twinkie’s. When people say that calories are all that matter I think it misleads people into believing that for weight loss the content of their diet doesn’t matter just the amount. That is 100% true in theory but in practice the people struggling to eat in a deficit are the people eating junk and the people succeeding in eating in a deficit are usually eating healthy. Even in this video he talks about using your willpower for other things. I think eating healthy foods and not counting every calorie you eat is the low willpower way of losing weight and people who say CICO is all that matters are leading people away from that conclusion.
@@needaudio1ok not reading all that but just the beginning - misleading? Anything that makes you eat less calories works well, but the fact that it all comes down to JUST LESS CALORIES has to be understood, otherwise we'll never be rid of all the bullshit floating around and people saying "it's not as simple as calories in calories out blah blah blah" yes it is exactly as simple as that (simple, but not easy to do at all)
@@needaudio1different foods have different levels of caloric availability so it definitely is not just the number of calories in the food that matters. The insulin response to the food also matters.
@@metalmarten3478 yes but it is easy if you just eat Whole Foods for most people. Which is why I think saying it doesn’t matter what you eat it’s just about calories is stupid. If it doesn’t matter what you eat just the amount a lot of people are going to struggle. If it doesn’t matter how much u eat so long as it’s Whole Foods that makes losing weight very easy for most people
wait but my alpha male tiktok nutritionist told me that calories are a hoax and all i have to do to lose weight is eat a stick of butter and a big steak !!! Im confused now!

Love the content but the amount of ad reads per video is the worst I've ever seen in any podcast. Not like 3 or 4, there has been 6 and I'm not even half way through. Crazy
fortunately they put a progress bar in the bottom so skipping past the ad is super easy. if that's the price we have to pay for free content, i'm more than happy to bear that inconvenience
I’m trying to think how many commercials I would see watching a 2 hour movie on cable. More or less? Don’t know but what do you expect if you’re not paying for TH-cam premium?
Trying to not tell people that my gf was on Ozempic was a nightmare. Calorie counting is great and all. She eats relatively healthy (prior to Ozempic). In saying that, she is literally black or white with diets. She cant have a middleground. She would fluctuate around 100kg, because she couldn't control 2 things. 1, not finishing her plate. Thanks Mum. 2, snacks. If she avoids snacks, she could do so for a week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, the moment she breaks and has 1? She is solely eating snacks. Ozempic fixed both. Now because she has lost over 20kg in 6 months, she enjoys going to the gym more as she doesnt look as fat so she fits in more with the body size of others there. Less attention on her. For people that have control over certain things, I can imagine the hate on pharmaceuticals. In saying that, some people have actual issues with things like what I described above which makes calorie deficits hard to be sustainable.
@@hitmanqoso by your logic that’s why you should always suffer through a headache and never take paracetamol? Drugs exist for a reason, take them or don’t it’s personal choice but don’t try to guilt trip others for not choosing the same as you. There is no moral high ground on this one
@@Robdutton91 I was not clear enough, but I meant it for a person who does not needs drugs for health related issues, just to have a better control over a diet or something similar. In that case there are better answers, than taking pills to fix your selfcontrol.

@@hitmanqoHit - I tend to agree, except that millions of Americans are morbidly obese and have been for years through cycle after cycle of yo-yo dieting that tends to reduce lean mass. Dr. Mike would say that losing a lot of that fat will improve your health. And realistically, once you are thinner, the load on your body when you exercise is less harmful. So, we need to be careful who we recommend avoid drugs. There is no stigma if you need it for health. And I agree with you that using it to achieve sub-10% fat levels in a man is vanity and not a good idea.
I love the way Dr Mike explains things. Unlike many Drs he explains things in a digestible way for the layperson.... & always in that cheeky irreverent manner.

Shout outs to all the Pacific Islander peoples. Samoan, Tongan, Maori. Do Fijians come under that purview as well.
Wait how did you change the way you train? Were you training less before or what happened?
Great, but go easy on the creatine, please.
@thatindiandude4602 Fijians are technically Melanesian but culturally are part of the polynesian crew
Is it Tonga time? I think it’s Tonga time.

@@evec2022 absolutely. They start eating too much and think it’s normal
Eat fewer calories, not necessarily less food. People are volume eaters. People who eat the same volume keep the weight off and stick to a diet 😊

The secret key is to not believe all the lies spread by charlatans. They usually help you lose WEIGHT (emphasis on weight, not fat) without a care about developing proper habits, or concern about the muscle loss, and they don't give you directions on how to KEEP yourself fit.
If you lose weight by cutting corners using the ways of charlatans, you will simply become an obese person in a fit body. You need to develop habits of a fit person, and your body will follow. Just watch Dr Mike's playlist, and several of his videos expanding on the topic more.
Remember to be forgiving and understanding of yourself, but also, don't lose your discipline. I've lost 4 more KGs since my last comment btw, adjusted the target goal, 1 more kilo, and that's it. Decided to lose extra, to look good once I'm at the peak of my bulk phase.

How does this guy have time to be an expert in all this, on top of MMA commentary, stand up comedy and hosting the world’s biggest podcast? Incredible
Really interesting. I will try to switch to sparkling water more often than my go to diet root beer or diet decaf coke.
I know I'm not the only one watching this with their stomach growling at 230AM on a Sunday. Ahhhhh the joy of deficit. Great work guys.

Also helps because
(1) I train jiu jitsu so being able to move powerfully through kind of a v-up range of motion is helpful.
(2) I climb so having a lot of endurance through a leg raise type of motion is helpful.
Train for your goals. Doing some random half hour or hour long ab routine is, for a lot of people, just taking time that could be better spent elsewhere.
I’m trying so hard to get from 130lbs to 140. Ugh so hard. But I’m learning lots from Dr. and I will get there✌️
Its amazing that people will actually argue that calories don't effect fat
Not really. It's 100% expected in the current victim culture we live in.

@@haykkhulyan6201 I understand but I also pay for premium. I'm paying extra to NOT see ads lol
Agreed. Come on Chris. Walk the talk! Don’t get me wrong, we are doing work to make money. But don’t milk it to death 😂.
I’m trying to think how many commercials I would see watching a 2 hour movie on cable. More or less? Don’t know but what do you expect if you’re not paying for TH-cam premium?
@@michaelm1053 I do pay for premium. Chris's ads are baked into the video. But yes, I think there were ads every 7-10 minutes back in the day lol
I like how the mother's words were cut out at first, but in the end everyone just didn't care.
Even if you have probems being consistent with calories, drugs are still not the right choice.
That's some puritan nonsense. Should people not take drugs to control their cholesterol? You do what you want, don't prescribe what others should do @@hitmanqo
I like Dr Mikes humor style
You can speed this up to x1.5 and it’s still good and doesn’t drag out the silences as much.
I listened to this podcast during Ketamine therapy and now I am Homelander 😁
So you’re on a milk diet? 😉
Dr jason Fung has left the room
Steps are better as he said also because it’s low intensity so doesn’t make you as hungry as running (even slowly). Great for a cut.
