Short answer: Nope. Ive done all my most recent art on the regular iPad with Apple Pencil support. I learned to work around the limitations of layers and all and turned out art for films and all with it without issue. :)

For beginners digital artist like me, i really recommend the ipad air 2019 , because there's alot a things you need to learn before as a beginners artist, and you dont need to jump to the ipad pro 2018 or 2020 . And on the ipad air 2019 you can do anything Flawlessly , drawing or painting with enough layer ( High Res , 300 DPI) , Design Vector, Editing Video , Multitasking, Multimedia,Browsing, Streaming, and many more. If you never used ipad that support promotion 120Hz before, this ipad is just best price performance you'll get.
Before buy this iPad Air 3, i really confused to decide which one i need to buy, the option is iPad Mini 5 ( new) , iPad Air 3 2019 ( new), and iPad Pro 2018 ( 11 inch) ( new or used) , ipad pro 2017 ( used)
I did research for each ipad for months ( while hoping that apple release ipad air 2020 but nope) ( i watch all those from different perspective, tech reviews ( talking a bunch of spec, features, power for game blablabla ),artist reviews ( talking about the experience of each iPad for making a piece of art ),video and photo editor reviews ( talking about how's the ipad used for photo and video editing),student reviews ( Talking about how's the ipad used for digital note taking ) , knowing what's the pros and cons, what's the issue that each ipad has. And compared it all to my needs. And after all the research that i did, I ended up buying the iPad Air 3 2019, Great battery, great performance, nice features ,Best price performance, great size, nice design ( small bezel, thin, flat and light weight design), and everything i needed as beginner digital artist is fulfilled.
Before you buy ,you need to do research like i did, and then you’ll be able to decide wisely which one is the best for your budget and your needs
The only cons that i felt is, the sound speaker is quite low and need to turn up the volume around 60-80% to get a great sound ( which is ipad air only have 2 speaker on the bottom)

I bought the mini because I thought it was a good deal and small screen means more portable. Within a week, I decided to return it to the Apple Store and exchange it with iPad Air 3. Mini's screen is too small. When you draw, your palm has already covered half of the screen. You'll feel that you don't have the freedom to create a single regular stroke.

Evian Putra I bought iPad Mini 5 because you mentioned the same expect screen and hand.
For screen, I don’t see nothing wrong with me because I used be traditional drawing person and drawing on my 5 x 7 inches sketchbook. I have been carrying my small traditional sketchbook anywhere place.
For hand, someone mentioned about right hand.
I am not sure if you or someone have hard time to use your or someone’s right hand for drawing or writing because you or someone kept accidentally hit home button while drawing or writing.
I have no problem with my left hand.
You mentioned about hand is covered with half of screen. I only zoom out the screen then draw or write.
I have iPad Pro 12.9 inch 2018 and I love using it but I wouldn’t bring it anywhere because it would bend. I would use it for HOME only.
That’s why I chose iPad Mini 5 for drawing and bringing anywhere place.

I had Ipad Air 2 and used with many 3rd party styluses. Then i upgraded to IPad pro 10.5" with Apple Pencil! It was like day and night. Now, I've upgraded again to the latest IPad Pro 12.9" and although the screen is nice, it doesn't feel as such a big leap from going to a non apple pencil device to one that works with it. The 10.5" ipad pro is more or less the same as the current Ipad Air, and it still pefroms excellently with Procreate and everything else. So I fully spport what Brad is saying that any Ipad with Apple Pencil is an excellent drawing device, with small updated for the pro tablets. Great review, Brad!

I own the 6 gen 9.7 iPad but at work I use an 11 inch 2018 iPad Pro. Honestly the experience is not that much different. My only issue would be the RAM difference which limits the amount of layers on my 6 gen iPad. Both 1st and 2nd gen pencils work pretty much the same. Screens look almost the same as well except for the size and performance is pretty solid on both I don’t really see a massive difference specially when you consider the iPad Pro costs more than double of what the 6 gen iPad costs. I would upgrade my 6 gen iPad cause the Pro is a pretty solid device, but I’ll wait to the next iPad Pro release cause the 2020 is pretty much identical to the 2018.

Initially, I wanted to get an iPad Mini and Pencil for drawing but ultimately decided to get an iPad Air instead and I don’t regret it! As a tablet, it has replaced my phone for doing a lot of my daily tasks and media consumption! As a drawing tool, I have been drawing on it non-stop! What stopped me from getting the iPad Pro was that I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue my drawing hobby, but after really drawing on my iPad Air, I plan on upgrading to the Pro model when my iPad Air eventually gives out in a few years! Any iPad will be great for drawing as long as you buy one to suit your needs! The added computing bonus made it an amazing tool for normal tasks on top of drawing!

Plus I can mirror out to a larger monitor if I absolutely need to. The layers threshold has only gotten in my way once, and the solution to work in more portable chunks of projects actually saves me a ton of time and rework! Thanks, minuscule mini, for making me work smarter, not larger!

I bought the 12.9 iPad Pro & Apple Pencil when they first came out - expensive? YES! - worth it? ABSOLUTELY!
With Procreate - a brilliant combo.
And it still works great 👍
Didn’t feel the need to upgrade yet to the latest iPad Pro but did get the latest iPad mini - don’t do art on it but it is great for Interneting and reading ebooks and listening to music - the downside to the big iPad Pro for these things is the sheer size of it becomes awkward when lounging on the sofa.
I am an Apple fanboy, and I’m never going to apologise for that, but, really, the iPad is the best tablet experience, especially for making art, that you can get.
    Brad, great content!

I've had my Wacom Intuos for several years and it still works well but I really need a new laptop and I currently have no desk or good setup to properly drawing on so I wanted an iPad to draw on and mobility. I was originally looking at display tablets for a long time but since I can't get a new laptop for a while I feel like an iPad would be a better choice. Definitely thinking on the Pro. Your videos always so thorough and informative. Thanks!

I totally endorse starting with the budget iPad if you're getting started and want something that can make great art for not a lot of money. I got mine a few months ago and love it; easily the best value in digital art one can find. I was tempted by the iPad Air but it's not nearly as often discounted as the budget model (which I got for $250 new), and you get the same performance in Procreate and most art apps. I thought the lack of a laminate screen would bug me but I haven't noticed any parallax or lack of precision. Just make sure you get a matte or paper-like screen protector because the budget iPad's screen is a bit more slippery than the others with more glare. If you want to do "pro" work, obviously the iPad Pro has some big advantages (way more layers to work with being the biggest advantage). Personally, I tend to start some of my more ambitious projects on the iPad and then finish them in Photoshop on my computer so I haven't had any issues with the budget model.

  • @HexYan

I bought the 2018 version iPad Pro 11. I know it's expensive, but now you'll probably find ones cheap. IT IS REMARKABLE! I completely switched to it and i rarely use Photoshop now. Now, that's me but honestly if you are a pure illustrator and Concept Artist ( not using 3D ) then you are fine. If you do, well tough luck then.
Still really good buy. Highly recommended.

I use Procreate on an older entry level iPad. Now that all iPads support the Apple Pencil, the RAM limitation is the biggest limiting factor for the entry level models; and that alone makes it worth going for the Pro models if you can afford them.
When I draw on Procreate, I have to constantly merge layers to stay within the layer limit. At best, this is a constant annoyance; at worst, it limits what I can do in my drawings.

Yes, iPad Air is a perfect compromise. It as fast as previous iPad Pro, have laminated screen and it bigger than basic iPad. Just bought it two weeks ago and so far it is awesome for drawing(though I got skinny hands, and Procreate is picking eyedrop tool when I laying my hand to draw a line. Not too annoying, but I need a glove I guess...).

I personally draw on the iPad Pro, but I use it also for: writing, reading, watching, playing and school work. So it’s very good if you plan on using it also for other reasons(besides drawing). If you plan on doing so I recommend getting a keyboard. It doesn’t need to be the magic keyboard, the normal is fine. The only downside is: if you have EarPods, they won’t work. You have to get a plugger(or something) or AirPods. And the normal Apple charger doesn’t work on the iPad Pro.

If you're a beginner get the basic 2019 iapd 10.2 , 128gb and apple pencil. The remaining Budget you have invest in some art classes. It's the entire package instead of going the iPad air and stuff. The A10x is more than powerful for handling 12 layers in 4000x3000 canvas in procreate, that's 12 million pixels. Also, while using this 4000x3000 canvas, you can open the photos app in split view for image reference, Spotify for music and have Pinterest opened in background in that so called measly 2gb of ram. So, in this time of crisis get the basic iPad, it's more advanced than you think.

One thing you should mention that is really important is that the iPad, iPad Air and iPad Mini have the exact same screen resolution. The mini has a higher pixel density to compensate for the screen size, but the resolution is the same, so even though it's smaller, it has the exact same work space and it won't feel tiny

    • @ddnava96
      @ddnava96 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Also, another minor difference is that the iPad Pro has TrueTone, which will automatically set the screen temperature to match the ambient temperature. I think they also have support for the P3 color gamut, which can result in more vivid greens and reds. It's not only about the refresh rate

I hate to say it, but Apple’s accessories, whether the tackpad or the pencil, blows the doors off any third party Mac or Windows alternative. I just started using my Mac Trackpad 2 with my Asus Zenbook Pro, and WOWWWWW! Finally a trackpad that is like an extension of my brain. It just works without messing-up like all the built-in or third party alternatives. I now also run Mac OS (Catalina and Mojave, under Virtual Box), which allows me to use my NVidia 2060 for AI TensorFlow development- a match made in heaven!

Despite the fact I'm not an Apple fan, but an Android fan and artist. I really enjoyed your video, because you've shown sometimes a cheap product (like the standard iPad) is worth getting than an expensive product (like the iPad Pro). I'll admit that the iPad's better, but me as an Android fan and artist that works on a Samsung Note 3 Neo, I can still make great art despite it's limitations. And I bet I could do the same when it comes to old iPads, even the newest lower one.

Lately I’ve been intrigued with getting a new iPad, the iPad I currently have is the iPad Mini 2(something like that-), I’ve had it since the beginning of 2017;while it still holds pretty decently it has it’s issues
Apple products tend to slowly die out once they get old and I think mines gonna eventually do the same, for starters the battery dies stupidly quick. Even when I’m NOT using it, it also tends to lag, which wouldn’t mind me as much but it tends to lag while I’m drawing which is a total pain, especially cause I don’t even have a pen,I struggle to do everything with my finger so when it freezes while I try to zoom in or something I just face palm
So honestly watching this is really convenient lol
