    Is "Gaintaining" KILLING Your Gains? (Possibly, And Here's Why)
    Can you build muscle optimally by using a "gaintain"/"maingain" approach where you eat at maintenance calories rather than in a calorie surplus? Can you build muscle without a calorie surplus? That's what we're discussing in today's video. The idea that you can build muscle at maintenance calories has been a fairly popular topic as of late. The issue I see is that it tends to get over-simplified into a simple black or white answer. In reality, it depends on the individual in terms of their existing body fat percentage, and it depends on what is specifically meant by "gaintain" or "maingain", whether that means to literally eat your exact maintenance calories, or to eat in a small calorie surplus of around 100-300 above maintenance. In this video I break the subject down step by step and explain who should gaintain/maingain, who should simply eat in a basic calorie surplus and how many calories you need to gain muscle. I also outline an alternative approach you can use to build muscle without fat (or at least, build muscle and stay lean overall) that involves shorter bulking and cutting cycles as opposed to longer ones. If you want to gain muscle, not fat, then make sure to watch this video and drop a comment letting me know your thoughts.

      One caveat I would put, Greg did a video explaining maingain more. He’s not saying not to cut or lean bulk , if you over weight need to cut , if skinny need to bulk.
      Greg says it’s after you get to the weight goal and body fat percentage then maintain the weight so you don’t have to yo yo diet. Not be skinny and maingain and not build muscle. No he’s saying pick your body fat percentage that u can maintain all year like 15% and its then easier to cut if you have to. The goal is to stay near maintenance which probably u are in a small surplus .

      @@Sean_Nalewanyj I agree with u, just wanted to get it out there a lot of the bulkers get wrong about maingain , they think how I’m gonna get to 180 or 200lb with muscle if I’m at low surplus maingain at 160lb.
      U can lean bulk to 180, then stay at 180 all year round maingain now instead of cutting too low back to 160 or over bulking to 200lb. Sorta where your physique is now , u been maintaining a healthy body fat percentage this year which then makes it easier if u want to cut a little for the summer and not yo yo diet
      But I agree with u technically when u main gain u are in a small surplus 200-300 calories over maintenance which is similar to a lean bulk but I see a lean bulk closer to the 400-600 calorie surplus . Then dory bulk 1,000 calories or more surplus

      @@fl676 Not really - many times he preaches that you should gain muscles through maingaining/recomposition/on calorie deficit even and like Sean said - in some point, some level, it's not efficient or even possible and it can be "harmful" advice. I tried it on myself, (I have friends who tried it) even with a bit higher body fat - whole year literally lost, spinning around, no strength gained. I don't say - do dirty bulk and get fat as fuck. But, if you are not beginner/ PEDs user/back to gym after break - go with some calorie surplus, aim at about 0.3-0.5% of your body weight gain a week. It won't get you excessively fat but after few monts and some visible, signifficant muscle (and a bit fat) gain - skip to not agressive cut phase, loose some fat and go again with lean bulk.
      And at the end - his advice of mainganing for open bodybuilders to build muscle mass is a JOKE. There is no way to do it for such advanced guys. They must push boundaries further, also with forced eating. There is literally NOT EVEN ONE big bodybuilder who does like that.

    As someone who has been trying to “maingaining” since recovering from the disaster of their first and last dirty bulk, this was an interesting watch. I managed to cut down to about 12% but have since then gone up a couple percent during my maingaining which was worrying me. After watching this video, I’ve kind of decided to just let it be and try to focus on building more muscle.

    • @dave93x
      @dave93x 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm about 15% right now and was planning on knocking my daily intake to 2000 ceiling until the Spring/early Summer and then was gonna be in a 100-200 or so surplus. I was hoping to be what you were, 12-13%, then slowly get bigger like you tried.
      What should I do? You sound a step or two ahead of me. I really want to shift this last bit of lower back blub.

    • @Nick-wc7ov
      @Nick-wc7ov 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@dave93x Jeez, can’t believe it’s already almost been a year. Well, I floundered a lot up until the end of August. I was maintaining my weight and my body fat didn’t seem to change much, however I didn’t seem to gain much muscle either. There could be more reasons than diet for that though, my training wasn’t great exactly.
      I cared too much about being lean so I was constantly flip-flopping between cutting and maingaining (seriously hindering my gains). After I flip-flopped between cut and maingain for the last time back in August, I let my calorie intake fluctuate (still mindful not to eat to much). And I refocused my efforts on progressive overload.
      And these past few months my lifts have been going great. I do a PPL split and in the last 2.5 months I’ve come back stronger every session except for one.
      As for what you should do it’s really up to you and your goals. All I can say is I have benefitted from they way I’m doing things now. I was probably about 13-14% when I started this fall and I appear to still be in the teens, I don’t think I’ve hit 20% yet.
      I feel like I’m babbling on and you probably just want my advice, but I just want to explain everything properly. If you’re really 15%, I think you should just eat well and train hard. You don’t need a crazy surplus, I’ve been shooting for a pound a month weight gain. After that just double down on tracking lifts and trying to go harder than last time, either in weight or reps.
      Again, long-winded but I hope it helps.

    • @dave93x
      @dave93x 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Nick-wc7ov not long winded at all. Sometimes I just feel like eating instinctively and not counting everything or being strict but, like you, I want to be lean.
      I'm about 151-153lbs right now in the mornings at 5'9. As I said I've still got that last bit of lower back blub to shift and I do feel I need 2000 ceiling to do it. I just feel like I'm really getting too low down on the weight though sometimes.
      If I relax on it a little and keep training I'd be fucking devastated if I just oiled on the side flab even more. It seems it's the first place that shows 🤣
      My diet is super clean and I workout 6 days per week with the recommended 3 hours of cardio. Just feels like if I go below where I'm at now it's like another step down and I reckon when I'm happy I'll be near the mid to low 140's and that just doesn't seem wise.

    • @Nick-wc7ov
      @Nick-wc7ov 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dave93x When I did my big cut after the dirty bulk my lowest weigh in was 152lbs at 6’ even. I also trained six days a week, 30 minutes of moderate intensity cardio every day I trained, and a physically taxing job all while eating 1800 calories. Even then I still had an undesirable amount of fat right below the navel and on my lower back. If I really want to get rid of it I’d probably have to go single digit bf.
      I honestly think you could drop below 2000 calories. Cbum was eating 1800 right before the Olympia. I only bring it up because if a muscle-bound, enhanced freak like Cbum can survive off 1800 for a period of time, you certainly can with much less ill side-effects.
      I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being 140lbs. If that’s the weight you’re at when you like how you look, then that’s fine. As long as your body composition is sustainable and healthy for you, I don’t think the weight matters much.
      I don’t have a picture so I can’t say for certain. But if I compare your stats to mine, under the assumption that you haven’t been lifting as long as me, I doubt you’re actually 15% bf. If I had to guess based off the information I have, I’d say you’re probably closer to 18-20%. Again, just guess and there are plenty of factors that could change my answer.
      If that’s the case though, I think you’re safe to continue cutting. At the very least you don’t need a calorie surplus. At the end of they day it’s up to you and your goals. All I can say is constantly trying to stay lean appeared to inhibit my muscle gain. Once I added back a few pounds and focused on progressive overload, I experienced great progress.
      Bodybuilding is just a long process for most of us. I’ve only been lifting about 2.25 years (most of it cutting) and am devastated that I’m not 200lbs shredded lol. The most important piece of advice I can give is to pick one (cut, bulk, maingain) and stick with it for more than 4-6 weeks. If I could add up all the time I spent spinning my wheels, it’s probably around 6-8 months worth.
      I guess this is the bottom line:
      If you want to be lean/shredded more than anything then keep cutting. You can go below 2000 if you need to. Unless you have issues unbeknownst to me, you’ll be fine.
      If you want more muscle when you actually lean down, put leanness on the back burner for now. If you’re actually around 15% shoot for a slow rate of gain (like a pound per month), you probably won’t even really need an active calorie surplus. Try and progress your lifts the best you can, and just stick to that grind for at the very /least/ three months. If you’re a little fatter, just do the same thing with no rate of gain.
      I personally want to have a lot more muscle before I try getting lean again. And what I’ve been doing so far has been working great for me. I think you should put being lean aside for now but as always, your call to make. Good luck bro!

      @@Nick-wc7ov if I'm not where I want to be by late Spring/Summer then I probably will gently up my calories over a period of time and just focus on gaining. My body feels like it wants to be 170-180 in all honesty. I would say I'm 15% everywhere other than the stubborn area 🤣
      I've seen slow but definite progress the last 2 or so months I've been at a 2200 ceiling.
      End of February this year I was 151lbs, got bored with it and went up to 163 in summer. Saw photos of myself and wasn't happy with the fat on my lower belly so now I'm back here again. For some reason I've seen progress this time around. I've been on creatine since mid September this year too.
      I started focusing on resistance stuff September of last year. Up until that point the majority of 2020 was on the bike everyday, eating as little as 1300. I was unhealthily obsessed.
      You know, I think my concern is that when I was eating that little and biking everyday, I did get down to around 145. When that happened I felt great. I got comments off my family though about my appearance, saying I "looked gaunt" and it totally knocked me. I'm aware I may need to go a step further (than someone without stubborn fat) to get rid of it. Jeff Nippard and someone he was talking to in a vid I watched recently said as much.
      I am definitely planning to go for a 2000 ceiling after Christmas though. I will be adding 15 minutes to my daily cardio too I think, so total per week I'll be doing 3hrs 45 minutes or so.
      If I can find this comment by Summer I'll update but, yeah, this all takes time so I'll just have to commit like I did that first time on 1300 calories, but obviously do it in an actual healthy manner which is how I've been operating for about 15 months now.

  • @Siegbert85
    @Siegbert85 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    I would agree with the overall message: slow bulk until you don't feel lean enough, then mini cut.
    Personally I've found that longer cuts (1+ months) do kill my strength, but a mini cut of 2-3 weeks typically doesn't. I've even made slight gains in the beginning so this will be what I'm aiming for in the future.

    9 months ago I started physical therapy. 6 months ago I started going hard at training. I was getting stronger and doing better... and then I plateaued and then I started getting weaker... and then I noticed that I had actually lost 24 pounds in a few months going from 188 to 164. I'm 6’1, male.
    Even though it looked much better, I was still skinny fat. Some part of my stomach was refusing to lose that last bit of fat, even though I lost 24 lb. Now that I'm bulking back up and trying my best to do a clean bulk, I'm definitely getting stronger and gaining more muscle again. There's no possible way I could have gaintained or maintained and still built more muscle without eating in a calorie surplus...no matter what Greg Doucette says it would have been impossible. That much has been proven by the fact that I'm getting stronger with noticeable results with this calorie surplus.

    Incredibly valuable info here from Sean especially for us Ectomorphs trying to gain. The “ebb and flow” he describes is the key I’ve found. Biggest challenge is how to hit your daily surplus. Counting calories is lame because it’s too inaccurate and time consuming. After years of working with old school ideas that didn’t work, I’ve finally found the trick that works for me. There’s not enough discussion online about this challenge but Sean does the best.

    Another awesome video Sean!
    Definitely agree with the points regarding maintenance calories. It’s such a moving target anyway so that “even if” you are eating at maintenance it will only need adjusting over time.
    I know I’ve wasted too much time in the past over-analysing my theoretical calorie intake and requirements despite the fact that I can never fully track my intake or expenditure accurately. Now I just eat a consistent healthy diet with plenty of protein, and make gradual sensible adjustments over time based on my goals and progress

  • @bxmalenko6727

    I appreciate the insight on this video. Greg advocates for "gaintaining" BUT Sean is 100% on point on needing a surplus, albeit, even a small one, to add muscle to one's frame. I know this because I'm living it.
    I've been on a deficit since May and have dropped the most amount of body fat I have ever dropped (meticulous calorie tracking and cardio mostly). I am at point where I look real lean but in clothes I look average to small so I know I gotta add cals by finding my new maintenance and then slowly adding cals to create a small surplus.
    Great video!

    • @loganwolv3393
      @loganwolv3393 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eh Greg is not totally wrong, if you got for example 20% bodyfat you probably won't gain much muscle if you're still going into a calorie surplus relative to calorie maintance. But if you're at 15% or lower then yeah perhaps a slight calorie surplus is needed for good gains.

    Love your content. You are one of the few content creators out there that cuts through the BS to just give good advice. The sad thing is that there are far fewer of you guys than there are people just trying to sell their products or get views. It makes it hard to know who is on the level when you're starting out. I'm obsessed with this stuff and I watch dozens of video's every week. I feel like I finally understand how the body works and what is nonsense and what is truth. But I had to wade through ALX and other creators to get there.
    So thank you for being someone we can trust. You sell programs that you believe in but it's not your main objective. You just want to make people aware and that's important because there are a lot of people out there that are misleading people.

    This video could not have come at a better time. I _just_ got off of my calorie deficit today (been going clean since October and shed about 18 pounds) and am planning to reenter the bulking phase. I'm not entirely happy with the results tbh, since the lovehandles and lower back fat are still somewhat present, but I've decided that, at least for now, I can live with the higher bodyfat percentage. I'm hoping that getting back to working out will strengthen the areas I want to look good to minimize the fat's aesthetic impact.
    Solid advice, Sean! Now I'm more confident than ever to maintain this slight calorie surplus; I'm still not sure _exactly_ where my calorie maintenance level is at, but I'll learn as I go. Appreciate the video drop today, and thanks for all the advice you've dished out on TH-cam good sir!

    I think the best take away and approach is that you can ALWAYS build muscle. U never have to lose muscle or gain too much fat to gain muscle. If u do the basics right. You can gain muscle when cutting, bulking, or maingaining. So whatever phase you’re in or whatever body fat % u start with, your main priority should always just be building and preserving muscle

      They forget that when youre gaintaining youre simply just adding muscle and not fat hence why you look so lean. As soon as you bulk and go on a caloric surplus after a year of gaintaining you will see results ASAP.

    Thank you very much for the video, is exactly what I need at the time. In the past 6 months I (without even trying that hard) cut and now I think I could be around 12% BF or even less, but I felt I wasn't gaining strenght, and I suppose that my slight calories deficit was to blame. In the next months I am going to slowly gain 5 Kg and try to maingain at a higher BF percentage and I am positive that my gains will be better.
    Thanks for your videos, I always appreciate them very much!

    Interesting topic and well covered. I was actually doing some research earlier this morning on reverse dieting and metabolic adaptation. I'm getting down towards the leanness that I would like to maintain (about to be 40 years old, 5'-9", 174.5lbs, 11.3% body fat using Eat Smart scale on empty stomach and after using the bathroom, I do this every morning to try and be consistent but also know this is a rough estimation). I'd like to be slightly leaner and I'm not really interested in being a body builder; I'd like to be lean, look aesthetic and healthy. I've been wondering where to go from here and this information is useful. Thank you and keep up the great content! I would be interested to see what Coach Greg has to say as a reaction to this as well.

    I love this guy, I've been cutting for about a month now and lost about 4kg, I've have the beginning stages of Abs starting to show and really want to get that more defined look so will probably cut for another months or so to drop some more body fat around my abdominal region, I also want to build muscle while getting leaner and have worries that I won't be able to as I'm in a 300-400kcal deficit but I can always rely on Sean to reassure me that what I'm doing is right, if I'm following his guidance and advice, and that my goals are acheavable and I need to leave all my fears behind and just follow the science so thanks man for helping me get closer and closer to that dream physic and strength level I've always wanted 💪

    I pretty much alternate between fatloss and maintenance phases. Main goal is just to have a lean athletic physique and don't mind sacrificing some size. Grew up a fat kid and was made fun of until 20 years old, so lean bulking or bulking is entirely out of the question for me due to thinking I'm going back to that fat kid again (darkest time of my life). Thanks for the video Sean, sick fade.
