Thanks for this very informative lecture. I was having trouble sleeping, just not being able to get under and stay under. No kicking or anything like that. I used to take Xanax to finally get under. Worked great. Then I got concerned about getting hooked on that, which I didn't want (I wasn't there, just didn't wanna get there). Then, I took Trazodone, which really didn't do much for me except give me very bad restless leg syndrome and make me pretty dizzy. AFTER taking that and getting off of it (and I was only on for a few weeks because I hated it) - I now do the yelling in my sleep, punching out, etc. I've been off of it for like 8 months now. Melatonin didn't do anything for me, but when I take that, it makes the kicking out, etc. worse. Looks like the treatment for RBD has a melatonin component to it. I really don't want to go there...
Questions: (1) Do RBD individuals wake up the minute the acting out cos them to hurt (i.e., pain) themselves? (2) What does repeated episodes mean in terms of frequency/regularity - every night, once a week, once a month, etc ? (3) How do we go from RBD diagnosis to diagnosis of PD, DLB or MSA? Thanks!
I believe my husband has this disorder, but it seems to come in clusters so a sleep study on a specific night may be unsuccessful. He did have an evaluation, but did not really sleep (being wired and in a strange location) and did not suffer an episode. I have videoed him in action on several occasions however. Pretty frightening indeed. But there needs to be a way to evaluate in a home environment across many nights.
Excellent lecture. Well done. Why are we not talking more about this? Its a very common problem. We need more awareness about this.
