Casio G-Shock AWG-M100 In-depth Review

  • The Casio G-Shock AWG-M100 is available in several different versions. They all use the same module so they have the same functions and features. The only real differences between the various versions are their colors. In this video I show you five different variations of the AWG-M100 from my collection, along with a few illustrations from the Casio website showing additional versions.
    The main features of these watches are "Tough Solar" automatic charging of the batteries and "Multiband 6" Atomic Timekeeping. So these watches are basically maintenance-free. They will run for many years without your having to worry about replacing batteries and you don't even have to set the time. Yes, the time sets automatically (even adjusting for Daylight Saving Time automatically) by receiving atomic time information from any of six different transmitters around the world. (Please note that the watch receives its time information from land-based transmitters and NOT from Global Positioning Satellites or GPS.)
    Although some of the watches featured in this video were originally released a few years ago, I was able to purchase them all in brand new condition this year (2018). Prices ranged from about $75 for the less-popular colors to $150 for what might be considered the most attractive version.
    Watches featured in this video include models AWG-M100A, AWG-M100SB, AWG-M100SBG, AWG-M100F, AWG-M100S, AWG-M100-1A, AWG-M100B-1A, AWG-M100SF-1A4 and AWG-M100SWB-7A. They all use Casio's Module 5230.
    I made another video focusing on the variations which you can find... • AWGM100 Watch Variatio...

    The only downside on this watch is the lack of a backlight for the digital screens. But i found a solution for all Analog-Digital G-Shocks. Just lay a finger above the screen and push the light button. So the light will be reflected from the finger to the screen. This works really well. Nice review and great collection.

    I've had a Casio Men's AWG100-1A (4765) for over a decade. I wore it every day for years. Then I stored it in the dark and neglected it for years. Just took it out of storage last week and it's still working great (after feeding it some light and resetting everything). It amazes me that it's still going strong after so much hard use followed by so much neglect.
    The only signs of wear are the white lettering( "FORWARD", "REVERSE" etc) on the black resin is wearing off. Also, the battery is at "Mid" charge and not "Hi" anymore. This watch also only knows about five atomic clocks (not six). The far right LCD is for seconds so the layout is a bit different than the watches in this video too.

    It's almost 19 years now, the battery still runs strong.
    I've purchased some Tough Solars lately, I hope Casio can last as long as the Citizen.

Recharged under direct sunlight for 2 days straight. Full charge and got a Hi indicator, thankful. Recently changed the band with a self weaved paracord strap. Only drawback for me is difficulty reading the negative digital displays. But still a favorite of mine cause it goes with any attire.

    So many features in this comparatively old model... that are presented as "extras" in the new carbon models: analogue + digital displays; solar power; move watch hands to see the digital display; atomic time (not very useful in may region); metal buckle, and all the standard digital features for a casio watch. Most important - the watch is not ludicrous in size as the GA-models.

    Just took delivery of one of these watches with my first combi bracelet on it, i really love the watch, I’ve got the black dial with white bezel writing on it, the sub dials are in stealth, not had one of these before and yeah it’s certainly a lot lot harder to read than normal (black on white) but not really too big a deal as I only really use them to check date every so often, I do wish they lit up with the backlight though. I really like the combi bracelet a lot, first time I’ve had or even seen one, in fact it was only about a week ago I even heard of them and I’ve had many many G’s for so many years, mad that I’ve only just recently heard of them, such a difference to a standard resin strap but certainly not as heavy or even feels the same as a SS bracelet on a normal watch, I’ve got the version with metal middle links but it’s still nice and light and super easy to adjust.
    Anyway, thanks for the video, I don’t like setting up digital watches, just not something I like doing but it was a breeze with your video, so much easier than trying to read a manual, thanks a lot 😁👍🏻

    I have the AWG-M100SB and I like it a lot. The white hands on the dark-blue background can be read very well, even under poor light conditions. For the night, it has "glow in the dark" and if that is not enough, even a backlight.
    One question about the GET information. Is there a way to find out which of the 6 radio stations was used to acquire the signal? In Europe, it would be interesting to know if the watch receives the German or the UK transmitter. The older model with Multiband 5 had an indicator for this information.

    Casio is known for using capacitors instead of batteries for the power behind the solar charging. They can go bad, but they can outlast just about any battery out there. The downside is that a capacitor does not hold the charge as long as a battery does.

    Thank you for a great review. On the strength of your video, I purchased a AWG-M100SB-2AER to replace my scuffed up Waveceptor. I use every feature and I'm very pleased with my purchase. One difficulty I experienced, is trying to see the seconds without my glasses on. Also, in subdued lighting it's almost impossible to read.
    Given your extensive knowledge, I was wondering if knew of a watch with identical functionality but with the addition of a second hand.
    So far I have only found the Mudmaster: four times the price just for an additional hand. Having said that, the backlight is better and I know I would have fun with the other features.
    Thanks again. I really enjoy your channel. I find it entertaining and educational.
    Best regards,
    Steve.

      In my own collection I have the GR-B100 but it’s a big watch. Also the ProTrek PRW-50 or PRW-60, but the price can be high and it has those added sensors. But maybe the closest thing (in a non-G-Shock lineup) would be the WVA-M640 or the Japan market watches with the same module like the WVA-M630 or the Lineage LCW-M100.

      I like the GAW-100. The whole thing is a bigger version of the AWGM100 watch with the same functions and actual backlights on the LCD windows. I don’t know if the LCD which shows seconds is large enough to make a difference for you. Like the smaller ones, the GAW models don’t have second hands. And I don’t recommend negative LCD watches if the user has any kind of issues with vision (or even if they have perfect vision, really).

    Comprehensive review. I have a similar model with a red hour hand.
    I think the hands are the weakest part of these watches. Visibility is not as good as it could be. I would choose to have the same colour hour and minute hand if I was buying again. I would also prefer solid hands with plenty of lume on them - rather than skeleton hands.
    I agree that digital works best against a light colour background, rather than white against black.

There’s no Time Swap in World Time Mode & u can’t jump directly to UTC time by pressing B & D concurrently, u can’t move the analog hands from the LCD panels at will, it has only 1 alarm, & it’s Multi Band 5 rather than MB6. Lastly, the 6 ‘o clock LCD panel only indicates which Radio Tower the watch received the Atomic Signal from. It serves no other purpose, which is a downer._*

    Awesome video. Thank you! Greg, will the watch enter an atomic time signal during the night (12midnight to 5AM) even is power save mode is enabled or on? I thought they go to sleep at night in the dark.

    • @GoodTimekeeper
      @GoodTimekeeper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When the watch enters sleep mode (when power save is enabled) the LCD screens turn off but all other functions are still enabled. If the watch stays in the dark and remains in sleep mode continually for 6 or 7 days then the atomic time reception and other functions are disabled. Also, the analog hands stop but basic quartz timekeeping keeps going internally. Casio refers to these two sleep levels as “display sleep” followed by the longer-term “function sleep” state.

    Very useful review. However, I have a question which I could not figure out from the video - is there a way to make the digital display show time from a different time zone permanently (not after you press buttons). Me and my girlfriend currently live in different time zones and it would be really nice checking my watch and knowing her time without making any calculations, or pressing any buttons

    • @SmoothRiverProd
      @SmoothRiverProd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Short answer: Yes! Long answer: If you set the digital display to "WT" for World Time then it will show the selected "World Time" time zone in the little, round LCD on the left side. The analog hands will continue to show the local time zone and it will stay this way indefinitely (until you manually select another mode).

    Can you force the atomic time check? For isntance, when you land in a new destination do oyu have to wait until your clock reads 12:00AM or can you ask it manually to do the search?

    • @wingtsubasatube

      Yes you can, just press and hold the forward button until a beep, will trigger a manual time sync.

    • @GoodTimekeeper
      @GoodTimekeeper  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can manually start the time calibration. However, the watch will NOT automatically know that you're in a new time zone. You will have to manually set the time zone if you have travelled to a different zone. Then the watch will already be correct and you can simply wait for it to automatically check itself after midnight.

    • @spacemanschannel6380

      If you land in a new destination, you set the TIMEZONE, not the TIME. The clock will then then select the best radio tower, according to the timezone.

      In regular time keeping mode, hold down the "adjust button" until the display says H.SET. Then you can use forward/reverse buttons to adjust the hands. Natually you'll want them both pointing at 12.

      No, it probably isn’t broken. Things you could try: Have the watch display the last time it was able to receive successfully. What has changed since then? What is your location and how far away is that from the atomic time transmitter? What kinds of electronic or electrical devices are near the place where you’re getting the error? There are other things to consider too.

    Please mention the iOS application called “clock wave“. This iOS application will mimic the radio time signals from five of the different time radio broadcast around the world. If you put your watch right next to the phone and put it into “get“ mode, the watch will set itself using the mimic radio signal. There is a TH-cam video about this - look that up. The application “Clock Wave“ cost two dollars. There is no subscription fee. Please note, that with this iOS application you should be able to synchronize a radio controlled watch (from any manufacturer) anywhere in the world anytime of day.

      @@taylorchurch7330 turn up the volume on your speaker as high as possible. Then, put your watch right next to the speaker on your phone (I assume your iPhone) and tilt it around a little bit to see if you can get it so that the signal is strongest. My watch I have to sort of play with a little bit until it actually begins to hear the signal clearly and then it works fine. Also, if you have an older watch that does not have as good a antenna for hearing the signal, then it may take two or three minutes for it to finish syncing. Let me know if that helps.

    • @SmoothRiverProd
      @SmoothRiverProd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe that Jay and Kays sells an adapter so that you can install third-party watch bands, including their NATO strap and stuff like that. But, other than that, the stock watch bands seem to work best. Casio does make a "combi bracelet" that will fit on these. It's expensive but it IS an alternative.

    Hi Greg. I have an MTG-900 too and totally love the thing. My son is going into the Army and I want to get him one of these AWG-M100 watches since they combine the tough solar with the atomic timekeeping like my MTG-900. He is required to only have an "ALL black" watch. I keep seeing several models that look identical, but have slightly different model numbers. Do you have a listing of what all these letter/number combinations mean? Specifically, I keep seeing these: AWG-M100B-1A, AWG-M100B-1AER, and AWG-M100B-1ACR. I cannot seem to find any info on these variations. LOL, I mean, I don't even know what the AWG means. The M seems to be a "medium" case size and the B seems to be "Black", which I need. I'm hoping that at least ONE of these has the glow-in-the-dark on all of the hour marks.

      1ACR = US & Canada Market

      From what I can tell, the GAW watches were primarily available in the Japanese and European markets. There's also a GAS line without atomic time reception. They appear to be very similar to these AWG watches in this video, but they are more expensive, generally, when I try to look for places to buy them. Also, from what I can tell, the AWG watches are available in more colors.
