Genki is one of the most underrated fighters ever. Amazing grappling and wrestling yet was also very succesful in K-1 and kickboxing. He was the whole package, and the undisputed GOAT of ring entrances.
Craig Jones brought me back here. I remember first seeing this highlight 10-15 yrs ago. One of the coolest people to ever exist. Fighter, pop star, and now politician.
Shit in 2007 after I wachted this video, my fascination to mma/grappling started really really hard, and thankfully it lives today, and it will always live :)
Very nicely done. I love seeing good grapplers at work. You have obviously trained a lot and put much effort into it. I have nothing but respect for you.
Ive been obsessed w bjj for years and NEVER HEARD OF THIS MAN! WTF! If he was born 20 years later even gordon ryan would be in trouble what the fuckkkkk
Genki was so unique. His BJJ was clean. He fought MMA and did kickboxing at the highest levels. He would do crazy ring entrances that no one else comes close to not even WWE. He fought for about 7-8 years and got out to do his art (he started a dance/music troop "World Order"), write, and finish his education. He's currently a politician in Japan. He's a real renaissance man.
Seeing him pull off all that crazy shit on one guy after another must have been amazing. As much as I love the flying triangles, I think the sweetest part was the calf slicer simply because you almost never see them and certainly not like that.
I love how the 4th match, he just mounts the guy by spinning around, then BLAM in his face. He cowers before he covers, and Genki just pattycakes his arms. Then he does the same thing to his legs. He's thinking, "WTF is this? I don't know these moves." Genki answers with his mind: "I'm owning you so hard, it's returning you to a childlike state."
I always though Genki could be an elite fighter if he really wanted to. Great submissions, great grappling, tons of athleticism, very underrated takedowns. Even his striking looked crisp when he wasn't dancing around. As much as I loved watching his style I think he could have been a champ with more focus/a different camp. Can't hate on him though: he followed his true passion (music/art). He'll always be one of my favorite fighters and one of the coolest humans every to compete in the sport.
@sephirothfemto Chris Brennan : Well one of the most exciting days actually was during my Westside Submission Tournament. Genki Sudo came and competed. It was a blast watching him, as I got to ref all his matches. I had never seen him, I had heard of him before, so all the stuff he was throwing, wow! I was laughing while I was reffing! It was kind of disrespectful to his opponent but he was very impressive.
I love both Genki and Sakuraba's style..only differences is Genki trys to avoid being hit and plays with his opponents to lure them into position while Sakuraba take shots to set up the position for submission
genkis grappling its perfect i dont know what some people saying about belts he fight the same day with all the other fighters if you are grapplers you know the energy you need for that thats mean his high degree of grappling
Yep, for example Dean Lister vs. Rousimar Palhares will be a submission-only 20 minute match at Renzo Gracie's International Jiu Jitsu Expo in Las Vegas within the next month
He is fluid and uses a lot of peoples strength and weight against them, he also comes crashing down on people after constant transitions. You're defending one thing and he's moving onto the next.
Pure poetry. And only on youtube would you read a comment like "ADCC isn't that great, look at Jeff Munson". Abu Dhabi Combat Club is pretty much by definition the best submission wrestling in the world, bozac. God I wish the Ultimate Fighter reality show never aired.
sudo only got his BB last year, BJJ's not really that big in japan, but he's trained wrestling and sub grappling all his life (was on the same high school wrestling team as Gomi)... yes, i am an obsessive fan!
@marcopolo2001 What is funny is... he doesn't have a colored belt, he did train at beverley hills jujutsu club, but not for long because as soon as he graduated college, he went back to Japan. Pretty much, Genki's skills are self taught. He isn't even a blue belt apparently. Genki is just 155 pounds of pure japanese awesomeness.
Does anybody know what happened to Genki Sudo? The last time I heard his name was in 2004. Also, to supersneakysteve, look up his k1 fights. K1 fighters are the best pro fighters around and Genki was one of the best.
This is one of the first grappling highlight videos ever, long before the days of youtube. Still one of the best.
This is the funniest jokes I've read.
This is the funniest comment I've read.
And still even to this day 2024
Genki is one of the most underrated fighters ever. Amazing grappling and wrestling yet was also very succesful in K-1 and kickboxing. He was the whole package, and the undisputed GOAT of ring entrances.
i think he'd beat mcgregor in his prime via submission
One the best of history of this sport
The man was waaaay ahead of his time. Not only a great fighter, but also had a great philosophy on life.
Craig Jones brought me back here. I remember first seeing this highlight 10-15 yrs ago. One of the coolest people to ever exist. Fighter, pop star, and now politician.

The transitions are unreal. Incredible.
I watch this every time before I go to jiujitsu, really amazing.
oh man i miss genki!!!!! what an amazing grappler!!!
The 18 people who disliked this have lost to Genki Sudo.
the guy has absolutely perfect technique on every single move....he's awesome
Genki Sudo was way ahead of his time
Very nicely done. I love seeing good grapplers at work. You have obviously trained a lot and put much effort into it. I have nothing but respect for you.
Genki Sudo is the competitor I most want to imitate with my grappling. He is so innovative and entertaining.
Genki was amazing back in the day, damn
hilarious.. he totally outclasses all of them
well everyone there was at blue belt level including Chris
That jumping to mount triangle at 3:51 was fucking mean
I'm so glad this video is still on here I remember watching this over 10 years ago and it still brings me the same joy RIP Kid
RIP? He's not dead.
His movement when he's on top is awesome, once he gets a guy on the floor they don't stand a chance
Ive been obsessed w bjj for years and NEVER HEARD OF THIS MAN! WTF! If he was born 20 years later even gordon ryan would be in trouble what the fuckkkkk

The good ole days before every single finish in a no gi comp is a heel hook.
Talento natural, todo un maestro en la sumusion, grande Genki
Love that you put TOOL music for this
14 years ago!!!! I remember when this uploaded... I was 26 😕
My brother, exactly the same for me. Dang, time flies!!
Yeah same here

he's such a fast and smooth transitioning grappler!
the song goes nice with the video :)
its like you can see his emotion when he fights.
5 min before this
some guy: "Hey genki check out this sub, its called a triangle, you can hit it on ppl standing too"
genki: ".....acknowledged"
His submission is too great!

WE ARE ALL ONE! ❤
This is what the art in martial arts means. It's so beautiful to watch.

genki's abilty to control and manouver his hips to get out and into certain holds positions is amazing.
He is so fluid!
The one in a million!!I train every day i wish i be that good.
the guys the don! i must have seen that vid 100 times and every time i'm left with that slack jawed stare of amasement
say what you want, the way he moves on top is absolutely ridiculous, and his triangles are INSANE.
this always gets me pumped before a match!
thanx alot! :)
4:14 ridiculous
I love both Genki and Sakuraba's style..only differences is Genki trys to avoid being hit and plays with his opponents to lure them into position while Sakuraba take shots to set up the position for submission
mannn he is sooo dammm creative and good on the ground.. so fast and smooth ... his transitions... dammm he is smooth
have you met him?
how do you get this fluid? what is his training background?
Keep Smilin'
Michael
LOL i love how he just stuffs their takedowns and reverses it
The Band is Tool, song is called Forty Six & 2 from their albumb Enima, third album I believe?
The greatest thing is nobody knew who Genki was at this time. He basically showed up and kicked everybody's ass.
I really wondered when I saw first Genki Sudo fight in MMA's youtube
I was like 10 months old when this video was released
The submissions he pulled off here are absurd, it takes ridiculous skill to finish people with them.
genkis grappling its perfect i dont know what some people saying about belts he fight the same day with all the other fighters if you are grapplers you know the energy you need for that thats mean his high degree of grappling

THAT WAS TOO BEAUTIFUL!!! I was competing in boxing but nowadays grappling is just too hot :-DD
@jtchen22 is that true? that's hillarious! what event was this anyways? where was it held?
@GreatestCreation909 Sorry my late.. problens with my note.
But how can I send u the photo??
Pure poetry.
And only on youtube would you read a comment like "ADCC isn't that great, look at Jeff Munson". Abu Dhabi Combat Club is pretty much by definition the best submission wrestling in the world, bozac. God I wish the Ultimate Fighter reality show never aired.
It must have been a little scary knowing your up next to fight him lol. He was in a total league of his own. Now he's turned popstar. War Genki Sudo.
Come back, Genki. We miss you!
One of the best HL reels IMO
I love that Genki only has a pair of shorts on while a lot of the other competitors have got all their gear.
@solistas95
Its a triangle choke just from the side, yoko sankaku. From the side you can grasp a leg to get more control.
He's now a politician in Japan.
The camera angle hides it but I'm guessing a lcok on the opponents's shoulder or upper arm from the angle of it. Just a guess.
damn!....flying triangles,calf cutters,....he's a bad man.
How do you think no gi BJJ and submission wrestling differ?
When did he beat Royce? I only saw the one against Royler.
this never gets old
thanks
@solistas95 it is a form of the triangle choke..he just turned a bit so he can grab the enemies leg so he has more control over the enemy ;)
Wow Genki Sudo is a beast on the ground. Im very impressed
sudo only got his BB last year, BJJ's not really that big in japan, but he's trained wrestling and sub grappling all his life (was on the same high school wrestling team as Gomi)... yes, i am an obsessive fan!
He won the Japanese UFC some years back. Although now hes retired because of some injury... He won his last fight with an effortless triangle choke.
that calf compretion was sick.
Who says that bjj competitions are only point-oriented? Many bjj competitions are switching to submissions only matches.
dammm genki is like a rubik's cube he's got all the corners figured on these guys
@marcopolo2001
What is funny is... he doesn't have a colored belt, he did train at beverley hills jujutsu club, but not for long because as soon as he graduated college, he went back to Japan.
Pretty much, Genki's skills are self taught. He isn't even a blue belt apparently. Genki is just 155 pounds of pure japanese awesomeness.
I should say I'm a blue belt in BJJ, at my academy (Carley Gracie in SF) we use "submission wrestling" and "no gi bjj" pretty much interchangably.
The heart ❤️ of what martial arts is 🙏
It's Tool, the song is "46 and 2".
GOD of unorthodox teqnique. Would love to se him in the UFC.
Genki is a god. Those guys might be cans, might not!
what weight did genki enter this tournament at?
@KimberLeon The move he does is a rolling calf crusher. Search for "rolling calf crusher from armdrag" to see a video.
what style has he trained in?
BJJ?
genki's AMAZING
but having that said, are these guys any good?
Genki Sudo is one of the best grapplers everr
The best one :D
Duane Ludwig vs Genki Sudo = biggest robbery in UFC history. WE ARE ALL ONE
ahh okay mate, I was confused for a bit thought you were insulting one of my fav's of all time.
Master of submissions...
@DiamondSoul lol? most of the wins in submission wrestling are all via armbar or triangle. So what is ridiculous skill for ya?
Forty six & 2 by tool :D hell of a great song, it combines with the great fighter that genki sudo is :D
Does anybody know what happened to Genki Sudo? The last time I heard his name was in 2004. Also, to supersneakysteve, look up his k1 fights. K1 fighters are the best pro fighters around and Genki was one of the best.
Damn this video is so old, but it is still very inspiring.
what sport is this
Wooow he has awesome moves ¡¡ The move on the 2:20 is fucking great ¡¡
Revisiting in 2021
the fast the furious. genki sudo is rocks.
that was fucking quick
@solistas95 difficult to see what's going on. It's possible a bicep slicer from that position. just a guess
