Velma - This Isn't Funny [Re-Up]

  • Velma has debuted on HBO Max and somehow managed to fall beneath our lowest expectations. Besides being unfunny, its humour is fundamentally cruel, spiteful & bitter. If a teenage boy had written it, we'd call him an incel.
[This is a re-upload of a video that got 250k views in a day. Someone at HBO manually copyright claimed a segment that was clearly fair use and got the video taken down. TH-cam's recommended edit then slashed 28 minutes out of this 31 minute video. In short, I was screwed, and I'd appreciate all the help available to regain what I lost.
And, because they tried to F me, I shall make another video F-ing them.]

The sad irony is that the original "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" was kicked off because a certain population of loud parents allegedly complained that they wanted some family friendly cartoons that juxtaposed what they saw as "violent superhero cartoons". And yet, here we are. A violent, narcissistic, and racist cartoon where two of the main characters actively deal drugs to kids, kids have their brains removed, kids are shot, run over by a car, and sexualized. Oh how far we've "progressed".

For me, the original Scooby Doo cartoon is a product of the hippie generation of the 60s and 70s, from the name and design of the Mystery Machine, the fact that it's okay for teens / young adults to travel the country by themselves in a van unsupervised (both men and women together, I may add), general themes of friendship and having a good time, and so on. The villains in Scooby Doo mysteries in contrast tend to be scheming and cynical adults who scare and threaten their victims for money and stuff, essentially the way hippies saw politicians and capitalists during that time.
In our modern day and age however, the culture is a lot less independent and much more materialistic and spiteful. It is more important to the current youth to attain social media clout and money than to just spend time with friends and explore outside your own echo chamber, so "Velma: is more a representation of our current generation than the hippie culture that inspired Scooby Doo in the first place. All the characters are obnoxious and trying one-up each other in a futile bid to be the best, there is little teamwork or friendship between them, the constant meta-jokes takes the audience out of the experience, and it is more a reflection of Mindy Kaling's bitterness than Scooby Doo. It's actually funny: the debunking-supernatural investigations working as predecessors to Scooby Doo actually had violence and murder and casual racism (see "The Horror at Cut-Off Cove" by Frank Belknap Long), and Political Correctness has somehow managed to revive those unsavory aspects back into our media today.

Is it though? The Star Wars sequels? They are explicitly sequels in the same universe that retroactively damage the characters, integrity, accomplishments, and even the metaphysics of the preceding movies, so you could say they ruin something all right. The newest Terminator movie? It literally kills John Connor to replace him with a wet sock of a girl and make it into a girl power movie, completely erasing the previous continuity and making everything achieved in Terminator 2 pointless, so that's also ruined all right.
Velma is an alleged prequel to a show from the 70s that's also set in the present day, starring race-bend characters who share nothing with the originals other than the names and some surface level similarities in appearance, it doesn't follow the series' monster-of-the-week formula, the characters don't travel around, and there's not even a dog named Scooby Doo in it. These two things simply don't exist in the same universe, so it's hard to get really worked up about it from that angle, so I don't see how it retroactively ruins the original.

Keep in mind, however, creators will reserve the right to show what would be allowed in their area. If you don't want to bend to a country's rules, you don't have to. For example, if American creators constantly bowed to China's rules when it came to media, well, there's a reason South Park is banned in China.
At least in certain animes, there is far better censorship than there is here. Heck, even some hentai has better censorship. But I do agree that any sphere of media should not show kids in the buff or sexualize them. Problem being, though, the rules of your country are not the rules of the world. I'm not saying it's any less disturbing. All media should be accountable for what it does wrong or disturbing for international audiences.
But we aren't talking about anime. We are talking about a self aware adult cartoon. A show that has AMERICAN roots. No argument can be made of a different age of consent law or a difference in culture, again, not saying it's an excuse. This was made by an adult, cognitive of the laws and social rules in the country they reside. They broke those rules and this filth was given the okay, shamelessly. I have to give "Velma" credit: the idea that a baby would be posing in the womb as his/her mother takes nude maternity photos is...pretty hilarious (though from the clips, I can't tell if the execution matched the concept). Legit, when I was pregnant, I used to have dreams that I could feel my kid's fingers and hand and _hold_ them _through_ my stomach (guess my skin was pretty flexible?), then wake up and be like, "Oh wait...that was a dream."
Ironically, I have the feeling that the majority of the production team is probably _not_ pro-life, but they accidentally "humanized" the unborn child. BTW, you can _totally_ tell the kid's personality _before_ they're born, even w/o a photoshoot.

That's a really good point lol I'm 36 weeks with my 3rd now, and was definitely put off by how much the writers seem to hate children.
Pregnancy dreams are something else! My dreams about my kiddos are usually accurate, especially if I dream about their gender. I knew my daughter would be firey, and my son would be mellow. Not sure about this kid in utero, however. But I think that's because he's an adopted embryo. It's really interesting :)

If they were going to make a solo story featuring only Velma, what they could have done was put her in a situation where the gang gets caught up in another mystery and an incident occurs where Shaggy, Daphne and Fred suddenly disappeared/get abducted/spirited away and her and Scooby are the only survivors. I'm not expecting this to be like Stranger Things/ Gravity Falls 2.0, but it sounds like a better idea than this reboot, which was obviously made to spite fans of the original.

If anything an Origins Story kinda decanonizes the fact that Velma has know the gang since Elementary school because A-Pup-Named Scooby-Doo is considered canon origins.
