I remember thinking it was a cool blend of ‘modern tech’ and fantasy. I definitely think, from what I remember, that they got better as the series progressed. I definitely remember being irritated by the ‘once a month magic refill’ aspect.
I remember liking the first two and felt the others were weaker. A big part of it is that Artemis was a grey character in the first two, whereas from then onwards he's a generic good-guy.

I am currently reading through book 5 and I love it so far. I will admit at times that it can get repetitive and childish, but I think it's worth it.
