    At least when I was in high school we were told that Tolkien learned Finnish first just to be able to read Kalevala. What is mindblowing in it's own because Finnish is hard language and Kalevala is hard read even for native speaker because it is written in a variation of trochaic tetrameter (yes, I needed to google that 😂). So I would assume he first loved the book and afterwards the language. That or our teacher wanted to make us more interested in epics. 😄

      Good to know. I have never read the letters.
      Though he was also so thorough with languages that him to learn so much that he could perfectly read it would probably be more thorough reading than most people would do. :)

    The connection goes deeper as Howard Shore's fellowship theme is a quotation from Jean Sibelius' 3rd symphony who wrote a symphonic treatment of Kullervo.

    Sure, "Musti" means black (kind of - "musta" would be the correct word for just the color "black"), but it is at the same time the most common name for any dog in Finland, or in finnish languege. If one wouldn't know a specific dog or it's name, he could still call it "Musti" and everyone around him would know that he is talking about dog.

    I would say the Greeks included psychological analysis of their characters. Especially, Sophocles and Euripides.

    Honestly, I like Kullervo better than Turin Turambar. The story is just raw.

      Very! Though I think Tolkien’s work is better because of the really sophisticated things he does with the story. But there’s no arguing about taste. ;)

    I believe Kalevala roughly translates to "Land of Heroes".

    • @AlmightyNorppa
      @AlmightyNorppa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not a translation but "Land of Heroes" is sometimes added after the name Kalevala. Outside of Finland obviously. Here in Finland it's always just Kalevala :)

    • @Pyovali
      @Pyovali 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sankareidenmaa would be "Land of Heroes"

    • @destraye

      Kalevala literally means "place (perhaps of origin) of the Kalev", whoever the Kalev are

      Yes, well, the myth tells of a line of giants that included the "Sons of Kalev" (Kalevanpojat/Kalevipoegi) that included many of the characters mentioned in the Kalevala stories. They are supposedly from somewhere in South-Western Finland, where a rival family of Untamo is described. The Estonians call them Kalevipoegi. The estonian myths call them sons of kings while in the Finnish mythos sons of giants. This may or may not have a connection with the Scandinavian legend of Fornjotr or Ikuturso. Kalev appears a cognate of "Caleb"

    I've heard that this book is set in Middle-Earth and is a lost tale. And that Kullervo is related to Turin Turambar.

    • @TolkienLorePodcast
      @TolkienLorePodcast  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sort of. Kullervo is much older than Tolkien but provided the germ for the Turin story.

    I presume you sayed Musti that roughly translates to Blackie (it has nothing racist behind it) as musta means black

    concidences? The word assassin is often believed to derive from the word hashshashin (Arabic: حشّاشين, ħashshāshīyīn, also hashishin, hashashiyyin, or assassins), and shares its etymological roots with hashish (/hæˈʃiːʃ/ or /ˈhæʃiːʃ/; from Arabic: حشيش ḥashīsh). It referred to a group of Nizari Shia Muslims who worked against various political targets(they invented political murder) Founded by Hassan-i Sabbah, the Assassins were active in the fortress of Alamut in Persia from the 8th to the 14th centuries, and later expanded by capturing forts in Syria. The group killed members of the Abbasid, Seljuq, Fatimid, and Christian Crusader elite for political and religious @t is commonly believed that Assassins were under the influence of hashish during their killings or during their indoctrination the history will repeat it self!
