I went on a school trip to Germany in the early 60's and the mini bus broke down and a helicopter hovered over us,never forgot that.

I lived in Germany for 3 yrs in the late 60's/early 70's.......the Police had those Porsche's along with VW Beetles and Ford Taunus - green and cream in colour.

Those Porsches were for the Autobahnpolizei (motorway police). The BMW 501 was classy but rather obsolete by the 1960s. Or you could end up with an ordinary VW Beetle as a "Panda" patrol car.

I’m not bothered about what he said it was RAYMOND BAXTER! Anyone who had a TV in the 60s and 70s knew how intelligent, professional, kind and most of all the humble hero he was. I wonder what he would have thought of the smart phone, SBCs and quad computing that’s getting closer to production by the minute. Tomorrow’s World wasn’t the same without him. R.I.P. a true gentleman.

Note the police saluting citizens as they approach. In Germany.

Germans like to salute. The stretched right arm was a bit extreme though.

Raymond Baxter (I think he was the narrator) said that knock on hub-caps are banned.
But just about every vehicle had knock on hub-caps, including the Police Porsche 356.
I think he meant knock on wheel nuts.

Another British/American language quirk. In America the term is knock-OFF.

+vespaUK125 The reason is easy: Traffic police uniforms in both germanies were based on the uniforms designed in the German Reich back then ...

did you see all those almost empty roads. our road systems like Germany's are a mess we need big and faster motorways we need people who know how to drive on motorways.
Recently I have notice an alarming rise in people stopping to give wax on the motorway slip roads or they slow down and enter the motorway at 30 mph we need to educate people on how to drive.
maybe we need public patrols who volunteer to help the police improve motorway driving
pull them over explain there mistakes recorded there detail and using a central data base they get four warnings in 3 months then they have to go back to school and pay for it.
but another thing we need to stop is the double punishment of points and fines it should be one or the others but not both unless someone is badly injured or killed
