      You should do a USA ture and start with the magnificent organs at St. JOHN the Devine and St Thomas Church in NYC...safe travels.

    Ah playing the end of that Mendelssohn fugue is one of the great pleasures in life.

      I normally solo out the subject on a Tuba at that moment, but this doesn’t have a solo reed loud enough

    Superb recital, enjoyed from the warmth of my modest, but warm home in Tennessee, USA. Google Earth has a nice tour of the cathedral, including the organ loft.

    The Mendelssohn has moved into my top ten. I'll be replaying it over and over. Arundel is a very quaint English town to visit, plenty of nooks and crannies. By the way, the Black Rabbit does an awesome lunch!

      I hope this video will give you a different perspective in to what was going on upstairs! I'm also interested to know the difference in sound - hopefully this recording will be much clearer than it was from where you were sat. Let me know!

      I will let you know Richard, from where I sat towards the front of the Cathedral, the music sounded brilliant and the acoustics added to the quality of the chosen music and playing.

      Hi Richard, I listened via my Bose headphones and yes, the sound was very clear as opposed to where I sat, however, from my sitting position the sound seemed to circulate around the building as if it was trying escape but couldn’t, which was interesting to me and I quite enjoyed the experience. However, the video was excellent and it showcased the actual playing and skill, which is always good for everyone to see. I liked the socks by the way. Thanks for posting this superb recital.😁👍🎹

    Wonderful playing as ever Richard. Re the cold in the church. Surely u can get a portable fan heater up in that organ loft it's big enough !

    It's always interesting to see an organ being played "in context". Did enjoy the concert, and it seemed there were many others there who appreciated it too, from the applause. 😊

    Fabulous, thank you Richard. (I specially love the way the Wedge rolls inexorably on!) "Cold" is good for organs if not organists - at one church we had to keep a tin bath full of water in the organ during the summer to try and stop the wood shrinking (didn't really work).

    Each time you play a recital I remember that serious 15-year-old to whom you introduced us several years ago when you played with him some very loud piece. Then I amaze myself with what I know of the journey you took to play these difficult pieces and I am newly inspired myself. Then I think of Oliver and wonder who he will be at 15. I will never know, except to know that his Dad and Mom must be the finest of parents to him and no child could be luckier or more greatly blessed. I am sure of that.

    Wonderful playing and a really enjoyable programme. So good to hear organ music played on an organ instead of arrangements of orchestral works! The organ could do with a thorough tuning though: especially noticeable at the end of the Mozart.

    Interesting! With Bach you know it's Bach on any organ, however, the Mozart I wouldn't have realised it was by Mozart if you hadn't told us. I would have quite happily accepted if you had said it was by Mendalsohn. A more romantic organ than what Mozart would have know has changed the dynamics! Lovely playing too far and to cold from North London to atten, still thank you for allowing us to share the concert.

  • @zaneclone
    @zaneclone ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wonder, as you mention the cold- does it affect organ performance in any noticeable way, given their construction of materials which can alter through temperature...?

  • @karipintakivi9153
    @karipintakivi9153 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well played! Mendelssohn needs a 32 foot flue, though.
    Good balance on Franck Prelude, often the left hand part is too quiet. The late Jean Guillou even played the piece with the left hand voice slightly dominating, which sounds refreshing after too many "standard" performances.

    • @beautyinsound
      @beautyinsound  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that. Alas, there is no 32' on the organ :(
      If you look at the stops I'm using in the Franck (you should just be able to see them) you'll see that, in the Variation at least, I'm using the 8' flutes on both the Great and Choir. There is nothing more I could've added apart from a 4' flute or the Cone Gamba 8' which wouldn't have been appropriate for Franck's registration.

    • @karipintakivi9153
      @karipintakivi9153 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beautyinsound I am no specialist on Franck registrations, the Guillou recording I have was done on the Saint-Eustache Van den Heuvel organ, which must be the most impressive instrument I have ever heard live, played by maestro Guillou himself. There registration possibilities are numerous, and Guillou was not a traditionalist by any means.
      What comes to 32 foot stops with Mendelssohn I have been spoiled by the Peter Hurford's recording with Ratzeburg Dom organ, not a big one but with powerfull 32' principal and posaune both. Your playing is on the same level, even when live!

      By way of an almost imperceptible motion of the mouth which the iPad camera can track each time he wants the page turned, the side of the mouth determines the direction of the turn. He is shown using it during the first or second close up shot of his face. It’s done very quickly, though, and only once.😊
