Teach your dog to down - Troubleshooting

  • This video is for those of you struggling to teach your dog to initially get into the down position so you can start training a down stay.
    Tricks for teaching a down when simply luring it doesn’t work:
    1 Lure the dog under something like your leg or a chair to get the behavior started. (I learned this trick about 15 years ago from dog trainer Kate Palese. Not sure who came up with this clever trick.)
    2 Use non-slip flooring. You can also try using his dog bed or a soft couch.
    3 When you see your dog lay down during everyday life, mark it by saying “yes!” or simply act very happy and go and get him a treat. This will cause the behavior to increase and make your dog more likely to offer the down in training sessions.
    Some reasons dogs might not want to lay down:
    1 They don’t understand what you want
    2 The reinforcement is not of high enough value in that situation
    3 The flooring is slippery or hard
    4 The dog is worried about something in the environment
    5 The dog could have an injury or pain in his body that you are unaware of

    Woow! This was super useful! A lot of videos recommend starting in a sitting position and then lower the treat so the dog reachs it on the floor level but my dog was simply lowing his head and not the whole body. After I tried the leg thing it took no longer than 15 minutes for my dog to learn laying down!

    I had so much trouble training my cane Corso to lay down. whenever I tried luring she would lean down to get it, she just could not figure out what I wanted her to do
    I eventually trained her with something similar to the method you mentioned at the end. I’d watched some videos on shaping behavior so I put her on a leash, sat down and waited till she got bored enough to lay down.
    Treat, then throw a treat to get her back up, rinse and repeat until it clicked that I wanted her to lie down

    Wish I knew about this trick a year ago...
    I had the biggest troubles of all signals with the down cue because my dog wouldnt lie down anywhere if the surface was either too hard or too dirty. She is a hairless dog so it makes sense in a way that she would find a hard floor less inviting to lie down on. She always just reached down with her long neck whenever I tried to lure her into a down position.
    So what I did was lure her up on a cushioned chair or seat and lower a treat in front of her down between her front legs, slightly below the surface she was standing on, so she couldn't reach the food by just lowering her neck down. It took longer than anything else to get her to lie down on cue but now we're finally there. Using small pieces of cooked chicken breast helped a lot in this.

    Another great, informative video. Thank you for all you share. I am dog sitting for a family. The dog is a mixed breed but looks like Border Collie. She is obviously very smart and is about 1-1/2 years old, I think. She does not like water/bath and the vet said that was OK. However, she does not like being brushed either. She sheds a ridiculous amount of hair and you can see dander on her coat when you play with her and "mess up" her hair. With their permission, I bought some finely shredded cheddar cheese. I have a slicker brush. I have been doing a couple of sessions a day for about five minutes each, where if she touches the brush with her nose (not foot) she gets ONE shred of cheese (if the pieces are not "whole" I will give her a couple of shreds to equal one good one). She is doing very well with that. I sometimes act like I am going to brush her foot and she jumps back. Do you have a video of what to do to get her to the next stage? I am keeping the sessions short and ending with her getting praised for doing a good job. There is NO scolding or harsh tones used, EVER, with this exercise. The amount of cheese per session ends up being about a teaspoon or two. (I don't have scales here to weigh it.) I believe she will feel better with that shedding hair being off her, as well as the extra dander being gone. What advice do you have for me please? Oh! She gets cheese ONLY with this exercise and ONLY when she touches the brush with her nose. NO CHEATING! Thank you. I am going to send a copy of this to Pam (Dog Academy).

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suggest using Kathy sdaos method of touching her where she is comfortable then moving your hand slowly to the area she isn't. So place your hand on her shoulder and stroke down her leg with some pressure as not to tickle her, in approximations until you can stroke all the way to her feet. Dont keep making it harder and harder. If you make it all the way down to her foot, then the next trial make it much easier, say just a few inches from the shoulder. SO your dog doesnt find the training getting harder and harder.
      You could also try Chirag Patels Bucket game

I can’t seem to effectively communicate to my foster pal what I want her to do when luring, but she definitely offers it much more since I started marking and rewarding it. How would you suggest adding a verbal cue to this once you’re getting fairly consistent downs offered?

    • @NaomiBuskila
      @NaomiBuskila 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would use very soft treats, that are easily breakable and see how your puppy responds. You can also use chicken turkey, or pastrami, no seasoning. If your puppy has a sensitive stomach you can introduce one new treat at a time, and then see how he responds. if his poo is good and he is very responsive thats a good sign. it might be best to avoid dairy products that cause diarrhea in sensitive pups.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would try boiled chicken at first. Make sure not to over feed when using treats, cause that can cause loose stool as well. So reduce the amount of food. You can also take some of the food for a meal and use that - if your puppy finds it reinforcing. You can also mix some of the kibble (if you use kibble) with smelly treats in a baggie so that you can use some of his food as treats.

      Id keep him in a large pen when you dont watch him, where everywhere is a toilet- pads everywhere, then over time shrink the area to the corner away from the front door of the pen or where he walks towards to see you. Then take him outside like you would housetrain a new puppy, frequently and reinforce him for going outside. Id add a cue to him going to the bathroom too.

    • @emmamemma4162
      @emmamemma4162 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      With male dogs I see some owners using a wide band that goes around the lower abdomen and keeps the penis close to the body. These can be purchased at pet stores. The idea is it makes the dog pee on itself and he doesn't like that. Also it stops him from getting urine onto furniture etc so there will not be a urine smell prompting him to go in the same spot again. Certainly something to be used with caution, but for difficult indoor marking behavior it might be more humane (and effective) than for example crating.
      Ideally the dog should get used to not peeing inside and being rewarded for doing it outside so you don't have to use the belly band forever.

      @@kikopup Here's another great tip I got from the good folks over at Simpawtico:
      "So you probably need an intermediate step. We have one called "The bait and switch." Have food in both hands. Lure with one, but reward with the other consistently. You'll see your dog start to focus on the other hand, and then you can remove the lure. Once they learn "I don't have to see food to get it," you'll move quickly through the remaining steps. Good luck!"

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      most people dont notice this. yes, its smart to teach a settle where the dog relaxes like that on a different cue and a lion down where the dog lays down with each back leg tucked nicely, so that the dog is building each side of the body equally. Use a non slip surface and practice luring the dog from a stand to a down to a stand and from a sit to a down to a sit. its normal for puppies to do this and its just a matter of a few weeks of appropriate exercise

But apparently I'm not allowed to stop cuddling until she says so...

      I suggest teaching the cue "Free" to mean jump off furniture or your lap- first training it as a release from a stay. Train for 2 weeks a short 1 min lesson a day, then use the cue when she is sitting on your lap for a short period of time, then for a longer period where she is more comfortable. Usually the longer the dog sits, or the more tired the dog is the more likely they will be annoyed if you move (the same with people lol) Here is a tutorial on training what you need- th-cam.com/video/hwEkjJBU2e0/w-d-xo.html
