    I get a real sense of satisfaction when a project is finished and I'm really happy with it. I think that is why videos like this are fun to watch you get the same sense of satisfaction with the craftsmanship and superb finish even if it's not your work. Amazing looking knife Sir.

    @MRTOMBO 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Beautiful work. Nice. I recognized the Cocobolo the moment I saw it. One note of caution: Cocobolo is notorious for it's toxicity if the dust is inhaled, or the oils in the wood are leeched into the skin/body when being finished or wet-sanded unless you are wearing synthetic gloves. You may already be aware of this, so please be patient with me: If you work with more cocobolo and spend some time throwing fine dust in the air, please make sure to wear a correctly rated dust mask. I mean no offense, I just wanted to make sure you had this information on this particular wood species.

    • @thetopicala
      @thetopicala  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mr. Tombo Thank you my friend. I appreciate your concern absolutely and I have studied about wood dust and toxication things too. It was a new thing to me to wear protective gloves. Well I haven’t regocnized no irritation on my skin luckily. I always wear the mask though. Many thanks, Osmo

    • @MRTOMBO
      @MRTOMBO 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are welcome. I can tell you a true story about Cocobolo: I'm a wood turner, and did it a great deal for about 15 years. I was in a very active wood turning club in Pennsylvania, and I had a friend there who was a very skilled turner and wood carver. He was several years older than I, silver haired. He came to a meeting one month, and when it was his turn to speak about what projects he had been working on he chose to tell a "Safety Story": One night he was finished three Cocobolo hollow forms (vases) he had been working on. He just wanted to get them done, even though he was experienced and knew he should be wearing gloves when wet sanding with mineral spirits I think it was. But, it was late, so he just spent some time wet sanding his Cocobolo for a while, then went to bed. The next morning he went into the bathroom to take a shower and stopped in shock as he passed the mirror: The roots of his silver hair was orange, and his armpits and groin were stained orange. He went to the hospital to be checked out. The point to his story was to never take Cocobolo for granted. He knew better, but was tired and figured a little wet sanding wouldn't hurt. But the solvents he was wet-sanding with leeched the Cocobolo oil/chemicals right through the skin.
      Anyway, I apologize for the long post. Thank you for being patient.
      Take care.

      Crhistian Gomez hi, thanks for asking. The original finger guard is very narrow. It was the reason to change it to brass or any other metal.

    • @crhistiangomez5570
      @crhistiangomez5570 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      First thank you for answer me so fast. Second... so i guess you change it for functionality?... Is ther no problem to keep the original finger guard? My first impresion is that you remove it for the epoxy can stick well as this example? Thats true? And last... love your work recently saw 2 more of your customization... nice!

      @thetopicala  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crhistian Gomez You may leave the original front plate if you want to have a very very slim /thin handle. On the other hand it’s not a big deal to assembe there wider metal plate. The original handle is very slim and after my work shop it’s thicker which was the idea in the beginning to start my custom work 👍🏻 thanks, Osmo

    That's a beautiful piece of cutlery, ..!! I wonder if I may ask you a question please..! I hunt a lot and use a Puma knife with a plain oak handle. I like oak wood though I know it is nothing special. Currently I use linseed oil on it, would that tru oil be getter to protect the wood..? Thank you for your time, and your video. Regards from the UK.

    • @thetopicala
      @thetopicala  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Tree Thanks Gary! I think any oil on the natural wooden knife handle is okay. You just need to maintain your knife according to use and those conditions where you are hunting. Oak is great choice. Some oils leave the handle color lighter and the others more yellowish. Osmo

      thetopicala Thank you for taking the time to reply. Linseed was what I had and knew it to be used to protect wood. I found it a bit thick and sticky, but not having any experience with other oils I wasn't sure if there was a 'better' oil. I am currently on the search for a nice drop point damascus knife, fixed blade, but the Internet seems infested with cheap Chinese knives costing roughly $50 or so. All the best to you for 2018.

    Great work! Really impressive.
    On the other hand, I think brass is wrong material selection since SS and brass creates a good galvanic couple

      Hasan Coşan Erdoğan thanks buddy for the comment. What would be your recommendation?

    • @dingdoorun
      @dingdoorun 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thetopicala Thanks a lot for taking my comment into consideration buddy! In my opinion the best would be to use the same grade of SS. But if its not available some alloys with nickel would work anyway. You might want to take a look at below link for the galvanic series. I think by selecting the correct material, this piece of art can be handled to your children and even grandchildren. :)
