One band that Geddy Lee has never been scared to effuse about is English prog-rock pioneers Yes, who proved to be a significant inspiration for Rush in their formative years. In fact, the group’s original frontman, Jon Anderson, is the Rush vocalist’s favourite singer of all time... Given that Geddy Lee has spoken so extensively about Yes during his time in the limelight - no pun intended - there’s no surprise that when it comes to the song that makes him cry, it’s a Yes number... Geddy Lee revealed that it was this classic song by the English prog pioneers. Explaining that it’s a “combination” of nostalgia and sonic magnificence that forces his tears ducts open, he said: “‘And You and I’ by Yes is so beautiful, especially when I listen to it now. The combination of nostalgia and pure sonic beauty is pretty moving.” - Excerpts from Far Out Magazine 2023

The quintessential crescendo over a crescendo into a crescendo. So Prog, So YES. One of many that demonstrated YES's great ability to create mesmerizing overlapping textures of polyrhythmic patterns that produce a sense of being within a hypnotic vortex. Very distinctively indicative of their unique qualities during their 70's era. YES fans GET IT, FEEL IT & RELISH in expecting the unexpected and this is why we can listen to Prog masterpieces again and again over decades and never tire yet STILL hear new details each time. It makes it so difficult to share this music with the average ROCK & R&B listener because unless you've "Acquired the Taste" for this genre, it's hard to follow and engulf oneself into its unpredictable structure. This is the album that sent YES to the TOP of Prog Mountain which inspired them to continue taking risk into uncharted territories with the TALES and RELAYER albums towards their ultimate milestone called AWAKEN

Madison Square Garden 2005. When Yes played And You And I, the audience was so overwhelmed that they had to wait for the applause and ovation to settle down in order to finish the song. The band just stood there smiling at each other in disbelief over how long they had to wait to finish the last few minutes of the song. Never saw anything like it.

You know it's a good song when the intro is the guitarist tuning his 12-string. 🤣 Seriously, though it's a really pretty song.
Edit to add: You need to do the 10-minute version of America. the 4-minute version is a massively cut down radio friendly version that nobody ever asked for.

'Justin sings Yes songs back at you' is the TH-cam content the world needs right now 😛
The 'America' song version you might want to listen to is the full 10 minute version originally released on a multi-group compilation album called The New Age Of Atlantic in July 1972, then in 1975 on the Yes early stuff compilation 'Yesterdays' album. The edited version is the 4 minute version and cuts out a wonderful extended band jam/Steve Howe guitar section.

You are right on, Justin, when you say (1) these are not songs you’re going to be able to sing to and (2) you have to hear these songs more than once. This is classic progressive rock. Trust me, after several occasions listening to these songs, your appreciation for the amazing talent behind them will grow. They are true masterpieces. I hope you have the opportunity to review “Awaken” in the future but I suspect you will find that composition “taxing” as well. Thanks for your reviews, Justin. I really enjoy them. First time hearing AYAI (Dec. 1972 - age19) I was driving to Mt. Snow Vermont with a buddy. A diner we stopped in had this song on the cubicle juke box! Remember those? I had been anticipating the release for months after being hooked on Fragile. My buddy was bored after the first minute. I was so enraptured by this song that the moment is burned into my memory, the same way I remember where I was and what I was doing when the twin towers collapsed. This song was love at first listen. The title track and Siberian Khatru took multiple listens. For me. Glad for your honesty.

When you get around to Yessongs Movie, you'll see how important Howe's steel guitar sound is to the symphonic sections on this piece. Also, his elec sitar work on Close to the Edge. Interesting Howe credits Bruford with writing the symphonic section aforementioned. Also I think there is a dubbed guitar through this w Leslie cabinet effect.

It’s interesting to me how Justin finds a lack of predictability to be taxing, where I find overly repetitive music to be taxing. I don’t want to ALWAYS know what is coming next when listening to music, despite enjoying lots of popular music. When I need to listen to something unpredictable, I find Yes to be the pinnacle of the marriage between unpredictability and accessibility. When I first fell in love with this band, to my ear I couldn’t predict what was coming next, but whatever came next always felt like it was the right thing.

This track got better in their live performances over the years. The important change came when Trevor Rabin slowed the tempo of Apocalypse in the 1980s. Chris Squire had to persuade Steve Howe to follow suit when he returned to the band a few years later. But that became the standard way they played it from the 1990s onwards and increased the emotional aspects of the live performance.

The country acoustic guitar is so sweet....I love the sentiment of this tune, and the progression takes me to a great place. Lol...I was just trying to figure out why I like this tune so much as I do as J. expresses his confusion! There's a deep emotive quality that I'm drawn to, but? Different ears, different spheres! (I love how YT inserts ads into places like the ascending note at the very end. 😡) Justin, your reaction is again pretty normal, although I'm surprised this one was an even harder first listen than the title track. To me it's a much more instantly accessible song, with all that happy major chord 12-string strumming, and then those huge symphonic melodies. Just bear in mind Anderson was diving deeply into the music of 20th century classical composers like Sibelius and Stravinsky at this time, which sort of explains why he was totally fine that the arrangements had logic, but didn't necessarily have an easy flow. Rick Wakeman even once described "And You And I" as a 'mini-quintet sonata'. And I don't get that comment about how the band weren't fond of this one and wanted to drop it. It became an instant fan favorite and has rarely left live set lists since 1973. But I do feel like this is what having a musician like Rick Wakeman can do for a band like this, in terms of all those bridging chords and arrangements.
P.S. By all the gods -- I know you've already recorded it, but the 4-minute version of "America" is a radio edit and is an abomination compared to the full 10 minute version. Compared to something like this song, even the full version of "America" (a cover of the Simon & Garfunkel song) is nowhere near as complex, and is more akin to 'The Yes Album' than CTTE. Please give it a try.

I understand how you feel, because I've known Close to the Edge for decades and I've never been able to get to grips with the title track or “And You and I”, which I find disjointed. I only like the more traditional prog-rock “Siberian Khatru” and that's it.
As for the double album Tales from Topographic Oceans, it follows in the same vein as “Close to the Edge”, a single track spread over four sides! (and the result is mixed, to say the least, as far as I'm concerned). I have a feeling you might be more receptive to Relayer and its epic track “The Gates of Delirium”, which while musically overloaded, raw and uncompromising, has always been much easier for me to digest from the outset, as it's undoubtedly catchier in its various parts. Well, you'll find out later!😉

    • @yes_head

I wouldn't call 'Tales' a single track spread over four sides. It's conceptually one topic broken into four separate epic tracks. And yeah, for someone like Justin it would probably have a... Very good song. Unfortunately it would have been better to save close to the edge for last! I think the last song [ Siberian Khatru] makes up for a lot for you as I know you😉
But you already did that a month ago🙃

It's a beautiful song but again requires a few listens. I thought you would find Close To The Edge the most taxing of all, certainly not this one. To me its beautiful. Man you are unpredictable lol. Siberian Khatru you enjoyed so there's that...

Taxing is a good descriptive. I imagine Bruford while laying down the drum tracks thinking to himself.. "I really should be in King Crimson instead" lol. But seriously, I feel like Crimson from this era is somehow more chaotic and yet more organized than this. As in, you can more easily find a strong motif or center in a Crim musical journey no matter how wild it gets. Of course this song does sort of have one, but overall Yes songs like these get too compositionally meandering for me. And the later bands inspired by this side of Yes are even worse.

You will get the next one, much different from the first two offerings of this great album.

I can sing you the song. It takes a few more listens, but that makes it more rewarding, not less. I find if I know a peice of music on first listen, I'm bored with it on the third listen. Prog is like ogres and onions! 😉

Like you said, with a song like this, you don't try to analyze it as a whole. You pick a few parts here and there and just let the rest flow along like the wind. Otherwise, you'll go nuts!

Justin i feel you are starting to realize that YES is like no other band. They pushed the limits like no other. I strongly suggest you sit down and watch some vids of the band in action. It might help you to understand just how great YES is! Please DO NOT PLAY the edit version of America. Play the version from Keys To Ascension!!! Thank you🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲👍😎

I think you’ll find these songs less taxing when you’re listening to enjoy rather than analyze. If you ever get the chance. 😂

Wow, I think you are fighting it too much. Need to let the music come to you. I found this to be a nice flowing transitions and beautiful. I found nothing taxing about it at all. But, we all hear music differently.

Now, I'm going to "return the favour", so to speak, and be completely honest about your reaction: it was disappointing this time around. I don't know what happened here, but AYAI is not taxing at all. It's a very simple, structured, straight-forward proper song given a majestic treatment. Beautiful piece of music. I find it the easiest thing in the world to hum along the "and you and I" part or whistle the epic synth parts. Not hard, not hard at all.
