i really think he is a verry important artist helping to preserve a genre of music thats fallen by the wayside and forgotten by corporate music. the first 20 seconds has more substance than every song played on the radio in the last 24 hours.

You are so correct; I completely agree. Can't stand the garbage that is being played on the radio today ; it's awful and not real music or talent.
Real music like Chris Stapleton's Tennessee Whiskey and Ray La Montagnue's music need to be preserved for eternity.❤💚💛❤

      Ughhh.,.........
      I mean, sure.
      I mean, I'm here because it's a beautiful song.
But why hate on the music of the moment just to love this song?
I think our kids music will be good in its own way....and ours will be ours
I think if you think modern music is "played on the radio" then you're maybe an old soul.
      And that's okay.
But no need to hate on now just because you remember then.

An old soul. Simple as. Writes songs from the heart and with meaning and emotes it with as much soul as Otis Redding, as much restraint as Smokey Robinson and with real conversational language akin to early 90's David Gray, but with his own unique voice. A true inspiration in these times of fake posturing and mind numbing blandness. He makes me feel like my childhood heroes did. Carry on the good shit Ray.

I think real musicians like Ray, Brandie Carlile, Michael Grimm, etc... that don't sell their souls to huge music labels don't get the exposure they deserve in the regular media! Irrelevant tho cause their music/voice/art speak for the artists they are.

Dear mom: Ray LaMontagne holds a really, really special place in my heart. This musical genius was working in a shoe factory when he heard a Stephen Stills song one morning, and suddenly decided in a flash of inspiration to quit his job and pick up a guitar. I can't get over the thought of how ballsy that was, and what a bohemoth of an artist he became from the simple decision one day to just go for it. His music is absolutely transcendent for me now, and he is to my later years what Dave Matthews was to my earlier years. This song will just never leave my mind after Bob and I slow-danced to it in the living room the day he moved out of our perfect little house on Cargil Lane. One of those moments you can never forget.

  • @markdantonio
    @markdantonio 8 ปีที่แล้ว +99

Rare genius. And difficult to capture with relatively simple things like video cameras and a few placed microphones. Even a well crafted, warm, recording studio where producer Ethan Johns created a comfortable space to lay down perfect takes of songs like "Trouble" and "Hold You in my Arms" still require the live charge of a songwriting and performance force that only the brilliant positive charged wires from a Ray Lamontagne can provide. Those live wires, connected to the musician's bare soul are priceless. But congrats, and props, etc to BBC 4 for capturing the magic on a soundstage across the pond where so many top performances have inspired so many more. Having seen Ray several times, his onstage comfort level translates over directly into the listener's enjoyment. Exponentially. Ray and this collection of players delivers the goods; we are indeed fortunate the gear was rolling. Hard to picture a world where a minute of this wouldn't connect to the listener on a deep level where the good stuff resonates. Brilliant.

Sorry but that womanin the same breath as this man is just all types of wrong. She turns me sick. Not many people can make music that I can't like or even just appreciate it for what it is but she manages it.
Don't know what it is that irritates me so much but it might be that others don't see it, I am guessing yr american if you think she is underrated because sadly she isn't in my country, everyone loves her and thinks she is amazing.
      Sorry they are all mistaken.
This fella is golden and can sing live.
I am sure the other one can't and is a convincing mimer, you know does a half decent live recording and mimes along to it. For soneone to sing live and make it sound exactly the same every time is a bit of a giveaway. So there's also that. Most people don't notice the "live" mime these days but I do.

Following the release of his first album I became an obsessive fan, he came to Glasgow and me and the wife were there. A solitary figure came walking on to the stage with his guitar and the minute he opened his mouth to sing me and my wife just welled up, a special ability, almost supernatural performance. I saw him twice after that both times great but nothing could top the first time we saw him. Spiritual.

These BBC sessions (and Letterman) are by far the best recordings of Ray Lamontagne.
Deep soul singers give their best to an audience, not to a microphone...

It's so funny to me how people spend thousands, if not millions of dollars making a half time performance when one man, with one guitar can leave anyone in amazement. You could put together the most extravagant, complicated show ever and it still wouldn't amount to this. This is intimate, beautiful, and full of wonder. Full of truth.

AN OPINION....a "LIKE" button press on a singer's creation which has taken them to another world of angst, anger, loss of love, loss of love ones and a shit-load of emotional roads, when pressed should send an automatic "THANK YOU FOR YOUR KIND COMMENT ABOUT MY CREATIVITY" to the sender...
On the flip side, anyone who even gets the idea into their mind to insult somebody's body of artwork by hitting an "I HATE THIS(Disguised as a DISLIKE BUTTON)" should also be sent an automatic response.....
........ with "FUCK OFF NOBHEAD...IT WAS NEVER WRITTEN FOR YOU TO LISTEN TO IT ANYWAY....IT WAS PENNED FOR TWO REASONS..1. I ENJOYED WRITING IT and 2. IT WAS ONLY EVER WRITTEN ORIGINALLY FOR FOLK WHO ACTUALLY "LIKE" IT AND GET SOMETHING OUT OF ME WEARING MY HEART ON MY SLEEVE, CUTTING INTO THAT HEART AND ALLOWING MY SOUL TO POUR OUT, NAKED IN FRONT OF ALL TO SEE.
IF TH-cam HAD ORIGINALLY PUT A "LIKE" BUTTON AND A "NOBHEAD" BUTTON AS THE TWO CHOICES....wonder how many would press the NOBHEAD button?.....betting quite a few.
....as some may have guessed, I'M A SONGWRITER.....who hates LIKES/DISLIKES buttons....and is now campaigning to have the DISLIKE BUTTON....erm....DISLIKED enough, to remove it.

+Stacy Steele Women should take note as well. I am a man that feels everything. I have the curse that I love with every fiber of who I am. I love, laugh, and live a love song in my heart. Some women think it is a sign of weakness to see a man show emotion and even worse the men that teach other young men to not. I am a man that still believes in happily ever after.. As fairytale as it sounds

This is so so good.... totally unspoilt, I love the sound of the electric guitar, and of course Ray's unique voice is such an amazing instrument, beautiful song, 2 wounded souls giving each other comfort in this crazy harsh world, I love how the violins seep in, it really is a tip top performance, Rays voice is so damn cool! I never forget when I first heard Mr Lamontagne, I was in a pub getting ready to do a gig, I think it was called The Eagle, our slide guitar player knew the landlord, and asked him to play Ray's "Trouble" album .....blew me away man......I think Ray's voice could touch the heart of a worn out street dog ....pure soul power ...... been a fan ever since ....
